health-two-point-what?
Almost one year ago, I hosted a debate in my Dynamics of Biomedical Technologies class on "The Promises and Challenges at the Intersection between Health and Technology."Â
I posed a number of provocative questions to spark discussion. While a few slides are already outdated, many are still quite relevant:
mHealth will open new oppt’ys for BioPharma to engage patients + providers
mHealth reduce in-person doctor visits and help mitigate the doctor shortage
health + tech can't change the way care is delivered
new applications will motivate a focus on preventative care
mHealth will help developing countries by providing access to medical care to anyone with a cell phone
Which of these statements do YOU think will come true?

What makes you angry?
"A quarter of a billion people in India go to school and don't learn...that's what makes me angry. That's what drives me."

In a startup no facts exist inside the building, only opinions.

Last 5 minutes
I enjoyed this excerpt from an HBR article titled The best way to use the last 5 minutes of your day. Since starting this blog, I have found I reflect on my day more frequently. I try to jot down 3 key items I want to achieve the next day, and reach out to those people with whom I connected that day.Â
As the article recommended, I try the following:Â "Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?"
How do you use your last 5 minutes at work?
Health is a state of mind.
Thanks to Dave Madan for the photos.
I shared this December 2010 McKinsey Quarterly article titled Why top students don't want to teach with a dear friend, and former Teach for America educator. Here's what she had to say. I am confident we'll turn things around with folks like her at the helm:
"How do we get highly qualified people into teaching as a profession, not just a 2 year stepping stone to something else. So much of it stems from society's perception of teaching as a lesser profession and that has to change somehow.
This will be my life's battle."
New care models
I am a big fan of Rushika Fernandopulle's care delivery model for Iora Health. Atul Gawande's Feb 2011 article in The New Yorker, The Hot Spotters, describes this well.
Non-physician providers (RNs, care coordinators, health coaches, physical therapists, etc.) ALL play a critical role in your health. This new model engages patients through intensive, proactive care management.
It's time we start enabling them to be successful.

Mental RAM
My life is a series of open ends. It's only recently that I learned to cope with this ambiguity. getting thoughts out of mental RAM and into my GTD "system" has worked wonders.
Between Evernote, Things, and yoga (mediation) daily, I've achieved some level of organizational nirvana.
Very cool "about us" page from the folks at Lateral. Creative use of an other wise staid page for many sites.
MGH
The more time I spend here (for class, fortunately), the more I think about how to keep people from coming here in the first place.
Don't get me wrong. It's an amazing institution.
Let's just starting talk more about health, wellness, and prevention, and not just care.
My current goals for the break are attached. Inspired in large part by this list.
Despite my electronic leanings, my bookshelf continues to grow. A function of my current status as a student, yes. Or probably, my free Amazon Prime account.
I'm excited with the prospects of e-Readers. Perhaps I'll make the switch when iPad2 comes out.
New beginnings
I've started this blog many a time. In my mind, that is. But alas, no more. Today's the day. No words of wisdom. Those will come in time (I hope).
My goals in writing are simple. I love to share. And here's where. My bias? A ruthless orientation towards action. Towards writing, and more often than not, re-writing.Â
The mere act is cathartic, but more importantly, will force me to reflect. On the lessons I've learned. On the ideas I've developed. On the progress I've made.
So, here goes. Thanks for listening.
