I know that this sounds like a wild speculation and he's like already dead in CHOI, but it can kind of make sense??

It would explain why he'd recognize Alastair's dagger, say it's a Carstairs owned relic and that it should be returned to Cirenworth (where the Carstairs — he and his family — used to reside in).

When the ghost reacted strongly to the flask with the initials M.F., most readers assumed it's because of the initials but what if it was bc it was simply a flask?? Elias was a drunkard. A raging alcoholic and he could have reacted strongly to that.

It wouldn't have been Alastair bc he would not have reacted like the ghost did if he saw the dagger. And it doesn't make sense to be Matthew bc why would he react strongly/violently to the flask he owned but reacted like this to a dagger Alastair owned??

AND Elias did die bc of the Blackthorns. Tatiana and Belial's shenanigans and Jesse being used to kill him (and Elias recognized Jesse right before he died, although it wasn't that he knew Jesse but that he recognized Jesse's face which had a resemblance to his father Rupert Blackthorn.)

Either, Elias stuck to the the Blackthorns (for killing him) and somehow got caught up in a curse that keeps his ghost there OR his soul had always been tethered there for some time during TLH bc of the black magic that the Blackthorns and Belial were involved in.

If he's the ghost, I do think it's a good compromise between connecting and hinting to events yet to come in TLH without the risk of spoiling the ending of the trilogy. I really don't think the ghost will be from the main TLH gang, it would spoil CHOT for us readers and cc would not do that, BUT YOU KNOW WHO'S ALREADY DEAD IN TLH?? Elias Carstairs. That's who.
