Love defeat all, but love is defeated by time...
Is that true at all?
I love this painting by Pierre Mignard “Kronos and Cupid”. A bunch of symbols speaking of the relationship between Kronos (the time) and Cupid (the love).
We can see this painting as the Time defeating the Love. Kronos, muscular, bearded, with a sand clock next to his feet and the scythe, is holding Cupid firmly and cutting off his wings. Cupid arrows are at the floor as symbol of his defeat and without his wings he cannot fly high, as love uses to do.
But if we see with attention, the arrows are not broken, they are inside a quiver and are setting carefully at the floor. Kronos is cutting Cupid’s wings off to make him set foot on the ground, which is a metaphor of using the reason even when you are in love, Cupid is not being defeated, Kronos is simply making him a more realistic love, a love with wings but with the feet on the ground.
Time transforms love, it makes it more mature and down-to-earth. With time elder couples learn to accept each other just are they are, with no idealization or distort of the reality, they know the darkest part of each other and embrace them and therefore they love with reason.
