Aaaaanyway I've been reading into the rose-garden & I really love it !! You've made it so pure & so sweet (& honestly? I now really crave pastries) sooo I guess what I'm trying to say is that I understand if you no longer want to write it or you're no longer into it or anything but if you can please update? Thank you!! & I want you to know that you're a brilliant writer ! Have a great day!
Hi! What a sweet message, thank you so much <3Ā
I do want to finish the fic, itās just that a lot of personal things have happened kind of recently that have made it very difficult to sit down and write. It also doesnāt help that Iāve grown kind of disillusioned with Skam France, both with the show itself (I still do love S3 very much, though) and the fandom. However I can assure you, I will update, and I will finish, and I am committed to the Lucas and Eliott story I have envisioned. In my mind, itās finished. I just need to put that in words.
Once again thanks so much for your support and lovely message, it means so much to me <3 And I hope you get some yum pastries soon!
I see youāre wearing a Keith Haring t-shirt, is that right?

I never had a real house to grow up in. You know, home. I never belonged anywhere. And all my life, I was looking for that thing, you know. Thinking that it was out there somewhere. That all I had to do was find it.

āāBlack Sailsā reimagines representation in period dramas by making it integral to the show itself.
Flintās internal struggle is not figuring out or discovering his sexuality ā rather Flintās character arc exists entirely because of his sexuality. His sexuality is not a prop meant to bolster another more important character or storyline. James Flint would quite simply not exist if he had not fallen in love with another man. Indeed, few plots on the show would exist if not for the fact that various women fell in love with women and men with men.
The driving narrative of this show is the battle for Nassau, a battle waged because of Flintās love for another man and because this love was taken from him.Ā
Flint is seen as a monster by England ā he is a vicious pirate, guilty of innumerable crimes. He was a monster to them before he did any of that, though ā he is told his relationship with Thomas is too loathsome and profane to be forgiven, and he is cast out because of it. The trope of the predatory homosexual is deeply rooted in our society. Homoerotic undertones in supernatural fiction have long cast gay people as monsters.Ā
āBlack Sailsā takes this trope and attacks it. The show insists, rightfully so, that LGBTQ+ people have always existed, but it does not sugarcoat that existence. āThey hang men for this,ā Mrs. Hamilton tells Flint hours before their worlds all come crashing down, and she is right. Regardless of whether heās a pirate or a respectable lieutenant, Flint will always be a monster to England, because of his sexuality.
In the third season, our crew is stranded on an island housing a matriarchal colony of marooned and escaped slaves. These people have formed a society entirely in secret. They exist outside the grasp of Englandās fist because the crown does not know they exist. Ā āBlack Sailsā is about people who have been cast out of society, it is about āmonsters.ā They are gay, women, marooned and escaped slaves. They donāt exist within civilization because civilization cannot allow them to exist.Ā Their very presence challenges the entire faƧade, because civilization only survives if people cannot imagine it any other way.
In one of the most powerful scenes of the four-season show, Flint acknowledges this construct: āThey paint the world full of shadows, and then tell their children to stay close to the light. Their light. Their reasons, their judgments. Because in the darkness, there be dragons. But it isnāt true. We can prove that it isnāt true. In the dark, there is discovery, there is possibility, there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it.ā The significance of an explicitly gay character making this declaration cannot be overstated.
For a shining moment, the show allows you to imagine a world in which this coalition of outcasts won. An alternate reality in which the New World was wrenched from Englandās hands by an alliance of gay and black men and women. Of course, we know they did not win. Homophobia would become the law of the land in the New World, same as the Old. Slavery would flourish, and the world as we know it today would be built on the backs of enslaved peoples.
So what, then, is the point of āBlack Sailsā? It is just a story, with very little basis in history. Why imagine a world that could have been when we have to live in the one we have? Thinking of his happiness with his male love, author E.M. Forster once wrote āI see beyond my own happiness and intimacy, occasional glimpses of the happiness of thousands of others whose names I shall never hear, and I know that there is a great unrecorded history.ā
āBlack Sailsā is imagining one of those thousands of unrecorded histories.
The show is an examination of the stories we create of, for and about ourselves. It is about how our narratives are wrested from us and twisted, and it is about how we fight to reclaim those narratives for ourselves. It is the lies we construct and the lies we are told, and the eternal struggle to maintain some truth in the midst of both.
The series closes with a character insisting that, āA story is true. A story is untrue. As time extends, it matters less and less. The stories we want to believe. ⦠Those are the ones that survive, despite upheaval and transition, and progress. Those are the stories that shape history.ā
We know from the beginning of the show that Flintās war against England and civilization itself will not succeed. Englandās power eventually waned, yes, but not before piracy was crushed and slavery was firmly entrenched. Homosexuality was still a criminal offense in my lifetime. Despite all of this, āBlack Sailsā is the power of stories we create in opposition to the stories civilization is built on. As long as we can tell those stories, we exist.
As long as we exist, we triumph.ā

I was in line at Aldi and this girl with two toddlers in front of me had her card declined and she looked so fucking sad and saidĀ ālet me call my husband real quickā and it was only 18 dollars, so I just paid for it, and she was very sweet and then as she walked off, the lady behind me said `āYou know that was probably a scam, right?ā and like, even if it was, like what a sad fucking scam, right? 18 dollars at the Aldi. If youāreĀ āscammingā me for some Tyson chicken and apple juice and cauliflower, then just take my fucking money.Ā
āA scamā people are fucking wild.Ā Ā
This happened to me, too. A woman had used WIC for the majority of her stuff (which I say from personal experience is such a long and embarrassing process) and to buy the remainder of her groceries, which included diapers and wipes, she used a card, and it got declined. I bought the other $30 of her groceries because hey, Iāve been there, and now Iām not. She was extremely emotional and began to cry and even hugged me. My mom called me on the drive home and could tell I had been crying myself, asked what was wrong, and when I told her what happened, she berated me for being āduped.ā I couldnāt believe she could be so disappointed in one of her children for doing something- nice? Is that the hill you want to die on? Getting mad about people needing groceries?
I once paid for a womanās bill at the vetā¦it wasnāt a big one, but she was trying to pay for some medication for her dog, and her card was declined. And her lip started trembling, and she saysĀ āI donāt get paid until Tuesday, would he be ok until then?āĀ
So I just told them to add the $20 something onto my bill, and I thought she was going to break down crying right there.
And I donāt care if it was a scam or not. Just do nice things for people sometimes.Ā
Do good recklessly.
I think āDo good recklesslyā would be fantastic word art to hang on oneās wall. Artistic people, go!
So this has happened to me but from the other side. Several years ago when my oldest was around three or so, I had my debit card decline at Walmart. It wasnāt a scam or a mistake, I was genuinely broke. Out of money. I checked my bank and discovered I had something like 7 dollars left to my name and a hungry kid and nothing to eat at home. So I sat there trying to come up with the best way to stretch that tiny amount of money to feed my kid. Not even to feed me. I can live on popcorn or something if I have to but my kid was three and he had to eat. So there I am trying really hard not to cry while I slowly take things out of my basket to get it down to under 7 bucks, when a lady tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up and she smiled at me and started putting the things back in my cart. I opened my mouth to tell her that I didnāt have the money for them but she stopped me right away and said āDonāt worry about it. Itās gonna be fine.ā Then she handed the cashier her credit card and said āRing up all of it.ā My kid got to eat because of her. I got to eat because of her. I had laundry soap and deodorant because of her. She couldāve just ignored me silently struggling in that line. She couldāve decided I was a scam and gone home feeling good about avoiding being duped. But instead she chose to help me and she saved us. So maybe the person struggling in front of you is trying to put one over on you or maybe they are just sad and broke and trying to figure out what to do. You get to decide which you want to believe and what you want to do. But Iāll tell yāall, no one has ever been more beautiful to me than that lady in that line who saved me and my baby. Be like her. Be beautiful.

DO BETTER. BE BETTER. STRIVE TO BE BETTER.
DO GOOD RECKLESSLY
One time, my dad and I were living the grocery store and there was a guy outside asking for money to buy some stuff to take home for his kids. It was around Christmas time. My dad asked him if he could give him groceries instead of money, and the guy immediately said yes, so my dad gave him one of everything we bought (meat, rice, some chocolates, milk, oil). At that time, my dad hadnāt gotten his paycheck because the company he worked for was going through a tough time, but he didnāt care, he saw an opportunity to help someone and he did.
Another time, my dad gave 50 bucks to a guy who said he needed to buy medicine for his kids. I told my dad he was probably going to spend the money on alcohol or something, but my dad said that āwhether he was lying or not says something about HIS character, but hearing someone in need and choosing not to help when I have the means to says something about mineā.
I never forget that.
āwhether he was lying or not says something about HIS character, but hearing someone in need and choosing not to help when I have the means to says something about mineā

I had this conversation on a trip through NC this weekend. About 15 miles down the road, the conversation settled on this: Iād rather be duped 10 times over than have ever withheld something out of cynicism.
I was just reading this and I just started to cry there ARE still good people on this planet and Iām glad to know that there is
Reblogging again cause itās still true.Ā
