“The British Empire was too strong for a bunch of upstart colonies to earn their freedom, but it still happened.” His voice was soft, as if Arthur could hear him from where ever the older Nation was currently holed up. “There’s always a chance for things to happen. I don’t want to bury more people. Or worse.” Not having a body was always worse and losing people never got better.
He looks away from Chuck in that moment, taking his glasses of as he looked to the ceiling. Emotions were… hard. Particularly in these days, when he couldn’t go out into the fight with all the other people, the only thing stopping him being his very nature.
He let the silence sit for a moment longer. “Can I ask you something, man? If the kaiju never came to Earth, what do you think you’d be doing right now?” It wasn’t the most tactful of questions, but ask anyone who knew him long enough and they’d say that America wasn’t known for overwhelming tact. Annoying to play into the mold, but easy.
“I know what I’d be doing, but that’s mostly cause I never had much of a choice in the sort of stuff I’d be involved with. Half duty, half calling.” He shoved his glasses back on, taking care not to do any damage to the frames. Strength became more difficult with stress and these days there was nothing but stress in his life.
HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN DESTINY, NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL; but in this one instance, perhaps Chuck could. Perhaps when his mother died, it was his PATH to be polished into a living, breathing weapon of their time -- to fight the battles that everyone was too afraid to fight. To give up everything to ensure that he was the best. A DREARY thought, if he were to be honest.Â
Chuck swipes a hand in the air, decisive. ❛ We’re not entertaining the thought of losing because frankly, we can’t afford it. ❜ He shrugs, mouth quirking in a joyless smile. ❛ And it’s not gonna be so bad. Me dying, I mean. It’s not like anyone would miss me. ❜
A moment that he takes to sit on the table, swinging his feet slightly and the sudden inquiry has Chuck freezing. A spasm of pain crosses his features -- a blink of an eye before it DISAPPEARS. ❛ Don’t know. I never really gave it much thought. One track mind. Thinking about what I could’ve been would’ve distracted me from being the best. ❜ A half-lie and half-truth rolled in one. Chuck did have passing thoughts about a reality without kaiju, but that’s what they were: passing thoughts. ❛ Kinda sad, huh. ❜ He admits quietly, in that vulnerable way that BEGGED Alfred to not tell anyone. ❛ twenty one years old and all I am now is some guided missile. ❜
He looks to the side and huffs, running a hand through his hair. ❛ Really? What would you be doing? ❜
