It's MOTHER's 37th Anniversary! (And YOU could play it)
Today (July 27th, 2026), marks the 37th anniversary of the first MOTHER game, and thus, the entire MOTHER series.
And if you've never played MOTHER 1 (aka EarthBound Beginnings), I'm happy to say that these days, it's easier than ever for you to give it a try!
So here is a quick overview of options you got (and a couple tips to make the game easier, if it intimidates you.)
—
First, here's the two main options you got for playing the NES version.
1: EarthBound Beginnings (NSO)
If you've got a Nintendo Switch (or Switch 2) and an NSO subscription, you—yes, you!—can play MOTHER 1 right now in the NES games selection!
It comes with all the conveniences of the Nintendo Classics service, like the ability to rewind or save anywhere... But of course, if you'd rather have an authentic experience, those functions are completely optional.
The main drawback of this version is that it's actually a retroactive release of what was originally an unreleased game (outside of Japan), which results in some small consistency issues.
Since EarthBound Beginnings was shelved in favor of its sequel, certain details from this localization weren't really carried over to EarthBound (originally MOTHER 2), meaning you will run into some disparities that can be potentially confusing—especially if you're actually new to the franchise, or have avoided any story details of this game.
It's not so major that the series as a whole won't make sense to you, but I wanted you to be aware of it.
If you feel this is something that would bother you, the next entry is a great alternative!
2: MOTHER Restored (Emulator)
If you know your way around game emulation (and if you've played MOTHER 3, you probably do), you could play an NES rom of MOTHER 1 with the "MOTHER Restored" patch!
This patch applies the fan translation originally made by Tomato (of MOTHER 3 fan translation fame) for the GBA port onto the NES version. Graphics that were censored in the original localization have also been restored.
This way you can enjoy Tomato's script without the drawbacks of the GBA version, such as lower sound quality.
The patch also comes with the "Easy Ring", an old fan addition to the game which makes it a lot easier. (Just be aware that you can't unequip the ring unless you swap it with another, so you might wanna test the waters first.)
Naturally, playing on an emulator will also give you access to NSO-esque features such as save stating, fast-forwarding, etc.
And of course, if you're already playing on an emulator, you're also free to just play the raw EarthBound Beginnings rom, if you'd rather have the original English localization, or check out any other patches for the game that catch your interest.

Intermission (Tips & Tricks)
So far I've listen two ways to play the NES version of the game, and of course, the issue of the game's infamous difficulty has come up.
Outside of the options already mentioned above (NSO features, Easy Ring on roms), here are a few tips from me that make the game a lot easier:
-Make sure to read item descriptions and talk to NPCs, check out the information your menu provides, etc.
To some these may seem obvious, but I've also seen many players get lost and confused simply 'cause they didn't see information the game is trying to give them, so that's something to keep in mind.
-Make use of abilities and items that apply buffs/debuffs/status conditions, etc.
I sometimes see folks lament that the early game in particular is supposedly just bashing without strategy, when you absolutely can do a lot more pretty early on. Ultimately, you should play in a way that's fun for you, but be aware of the tools you got at your disposal.
Make sure to pay attention to your party members' strength and weaknesses and play accordingly.
-Make use of Bread Crumbs (particularly in dungeons)
This is the one I see underestimated the most.
If you "Use" the Bread item instead of eating it, you create "Bread Crumbs" and start leaving a trail (it's invisible, tough.) If you use "Bread Crumbs" again, you get instantly ported back to the point where you started the trail.
This makes so many of the game's more infamous stretches a lot easier to manage, especially if you can manage to utilize multiple trails.
For example:
Say I start Crumb Trail 1 at my healing spot, then go explore a long dungeon. Once I'm outta energy and need to heal, I first start Crumb Trail 2 in the dungeon. Then, I use Crumb Trail 1 to return to my healing spot. After healing, I can use Crumb Trail 2 to return to where I left off in the dungeon without needing to backtrack.
If you continue to stack up on bread, you can just keep this going as long as you want.
And even if you only feel confident in handling a single trail, this will already save you a lotta time.
Note: There is an infamous "Bread Crumbs glitch", but you're unlikely to run into it in a regular playthrough, and I believe it's even fixed in both versions I've mentioned.
-Use a guide
If all of the above still leaves the game too hard for you, but you're also determined to keep going, there is no shame in using a guide to help you out.
After all, back in the day the kids playing this game also had the manual and various strategy guides at their disposal.
I trust you can curate your own experience and decide for yourself how much help you'd want for your playthrough.

With all that said, I personally believe the game really isn't as hard as people make it out to be, and I'd always recommend you at least check it out, to see for yourself how you feel.
However, if you truly gave it a shot and didn't enjoy it, or just decided you don't want to try, there are still more options for you in the form of fan works.
Note that the creators of both these projects have stated that their works are not meant to act as replacements for the original, and generally suggested you'd play it first, too.
But, if you're certain about skipping the original, that's your choice to make.
So, here's the other two notable options:
3: EarthBound Beginnings Remake (Emulator)
This is a fan-made hack which turns EarthBound/MOTHER 2 into a SNES remake of EarthBound Beginnings/MOTHER 1!
If you're fine with the idea of playing EarthBound, this one should be no problem for you!
Since it's a patch, you'll need an EarthBound rom and an SNES emulator to play it, of course. The patch and additional details/help can be found on the project's website.
This game uses the official localization as the basis for its script, but made sure to correct/adjust the disparities I mentioned before, and corrected some errors, so it's less of an issue here.
Additionally, an "unlocalized" version is supposedly in the works, too. So, if that'd be more up your alley, you can keep an eye out for that eventual release!
There's a lot of love and attention to detail in this project, so while the NES version will always be the best first choice to me, I don't feel bad about this as an alternative.
4: MOTHER Encore (Window, Mac, Linux)
This one is technically more of a special mention, since it's not finished yet (but you can still play.)
MOTHER Encore is a fan reimagining of MOTHER 1 made in Godot. Style-wise, I'd probably describe as something like a "MOTHER 4", even.
It's set to be released in chapters, with 2 out of 8 planned "Acts" being currently playable.
As the term "reimagining" implies, this one arguably takes a lot more liberties with the source than EBBR, and thus is harder for me to recommend as a first time experience, but hey, it's your choice.
If you are intent on making this the first version of MOTHER 1 you play, I'd almost recommend checking it out after MOTHER 2 and 3, since it kinda leans more into that angle. (Plus, just from a gameplay PERSPECTIVE, it might be a bit jarring to go from this game back to SNES and GBA.)
But it's also hard to say for certain, since again, it's not finished yet.
Definitely keep an eye on this one, but only make it your first playthrough choice if you really can't stomach any of the options above.
But absolutely check this out afterwards, it's pretty great in its own right, clearly made with a lotta love as well.
