After walking pretty far from the crowded park and finding a quieter area, you stopped. You let go of Hunterâs hand and looked at him anxiously. "Are you okay?" you asked.
"I'm the one who should be asking you that," Hunter said, looking back at you.
You quickly looked away. Your chest felt tight, filled with embarrassment, worry, anger, disappointment, and sadness all mixed together. You knew that if you looked at Hunter right now, the tears you were holding back would definitely fall. And you didn't want that. You didn't want to look weak. Especially not in front of Hunter.
You tried to calm your breathing. "I-Iâm fine, but... what was that? Why did you act like that?" you asked, trying to fight the urge to cry and giving Hunter a sharp look.
"What?"
"Donât act innocent. I heard what you said about beating him on the ice and in romance. What do you mean by that? Have you known him before? And why did you provoke him like that?" You looked bravely at Hunter, waiting for his answer.
Hunter gave a cynical smile. "Heâs just annoying, especially after he insulted you with his big mouth. Of course I had to confront him."
"That doesn't answer my question, Hunter."
Hunter let out a soft sigh. "Fine. Iâve known him since high school, and I was in the same class as his younger sister. Well, like any overprotective older brother, he accused me of breaking his sister's heart. Then we became hockey rivals, and he hated me even more because I beat him."
"He has a younger sister?" you asked.
"Yeah, her name is Summer. Honestly, Summer and I just wanted a casual relationship at first. But after that, Summer suddenly started avoiding me, and then Dean showed up with his accusations."
You went quiet, processing the information you just heard. Not only did you just find out that Dean had a sister, but you were also still trying to process Hunterâs words.
"You... slept with her? For how long?" you asked.
"Just a few weeks. We usually met up whenever we had free time."
"Did you force her?" you asked carefully.
Noticing your suspicion, Hunter looked at you in disbelief. "I would never do that. (Name)... you donât trust me?"
Seeing his reaction instantly made you feel bad. "Sorry... Iâm just still processing it... Like... you really are grown up now. I just canât imagine you flirting with girlsâlet alone sleeping with anyone. It just... doesn't feel right."
Hunter suddenly burst out laughing. "(Name), we are only one year apart. Even though youâre older, Iâm pretty sure youâre more innocent than me."
"If you think being innocent means being stupid, then Iâm not innocent," you argued.
"I didnât say youâre stupid. I said youâre innocent. Youâre still scared to step out of your worldâ"
"No, Iâm not, okay? I just have my own principles and boundaries. And... I thought we were still too young for that, you know."
"So thatâs the reason why you donât have a boyfriend? Because you think weâre still too young?" Hunter looked at you teasingly.
"Well... yeah. I guess," you answered quietly.
His playful look slowly softened. "Or... is it still hard for you to trust men and open up?" Hunter asked.
You instantly went completely quiet. You hated this. You hated it when someone could read your feelings, even though you tried so hard to hide them. Even with someone closeâor used to be closeâto you like Hunter, you still felt this was embarrassing and a little scary.
You didnât like looking fragile and vulnerable in front of others.
You didnât want your biggest weakness to be mocked or used by someone else, which would only make things worse for you.
"(Name)? Hey, are you okay?"
You didn't realize that the panic was making your body freeze and your chest feel tight, until Hunter grabbed both of your shoulders and patted them gently.
You looked up and saw the worried look on his face.
"I, Iâm fine. I think... I should go back." You unconsciously took a step back and held your chest, trying to control your fast breathing.
Hunter noticed this and let go of his grip to give you some space. "Iâll walk you back."
You shook your head gently, trying to politely refuse Hunterâs offer. "Itâs okay, Hunter. Iâm fine."
"Youâre not. And please, let me walk you to your dorm building. Or do you want to make your childhood friend worry about you?" Hunter said, smiling with a fake sad face.
That actually managed to relieve the tightness in your chest and brought a small smile to your face, even if it was just for a second.
Finally, you walked side by side with Hunter toward your dorm. The cold night wind made you unconsciously cross your arms over your chest, rubbing your cold skin.
There was only the night wind and the sound of bugs in the trees accompanying your walk. At first, you felt comfortable because Hunter didn't force you to talk. However, the quietness made you replay the events from earlier in your head. You still didnât have a full answer about why Hunter provoked Dean. And why did Dean look like he was the one who got hurt when he saw you with Hunter?
But you also remembered his mean accusation. Dean said you were cold and played hard to get because your taste was low? Like Hunter? How could he think that? First of all, Hunter wasn't low. Second, even if Hunter wasn't lowâ actually the opposite, you didn't see Hunter that way. You purely loved him like family. Third, why did Hunter say he would beat Dean in romance? What did that mean and what did it have to do with you?
You didn't want to get ahead of yourself and think that Hunter meant... Dean saw Hunter as a rival, and in this contextâthe object of his rivalry was you. That was just impossible.
"You know, the voice in your head is really loud."
You blinked in surprise, then turned around. "Huh?"
Hunter looked at you deeply. He stopped walking, making you stop too. "Your mouth is quiet. But your face shows everything."
You looked around randomly, trying to find a quick answer to deny Hunter's guess, which was unfortunately completely right. "I-Iâm notâ"
"Wanna talk about it?" Hunter interrupted.
"No... Yeah. I mean, yeah. I think, yes, we should." You built up your courage. "You havenât given me a full answer. Why did you act like that to him? And what you said to Deanâ"
"He likes you."
You blinked, completely speechless.
"I donât know how you know Di Laurentis or why heâs acting like an assholeâwell, I shouldn't be surprised, reallyâbut Iâm pretty sure heâs jealous of me. He even threatened me to stay away from you." Hunter shrugged his shoulders.
Your mouth opened. A million sentences to disagree with Hunter's words were on the tip of your tongue, but not a single word came out.
"And honestly, I should be the one telling him to stay away from you. He doesn't deserve you, (Name). Heâs an asshole, and youâre literally the best person Iâve ever known. I wonât let a jerk like him hurt you."
"Yeah... heâs a jerk... but heâs not that bad. I mean, he helped me in class before, and he seemed genuinely sincere. I thought... he still had a good side to him." You thought back to the group presentation.
"That doesn't give him the right to embarrass you. Let me ask you, has he ever accused you without a reason before this?"
Hunter's question made you look back at him. You remembered your very first interaction with Dean. You didn't know if you were just being sensitive back then, but his accusationâ saying you intentionally made him and that girl fall because you were jealous, really insulted you. At that moment, you immediately wondered if you looked so desperate to get a guy's attention just based on your looks. Did you look so pathetic that Dean could think you would hurt someone just because you didn't get what you wanted? Did you look that low in Dean's eyesâand maybe in everyone else's eyes too?
Without realizing it, your tears started to fall. You were too embarrassed to admit that you cared so much about what people thought of you. You knew you shouldn't care. You couldn't control other people's opinions. What you could control was how you reacted to it. Whether you became overthinking about their words and ended up doubting yourself, or... whether you became indifferent and stopped caring about your surroundings, blocking everyone out just to protect your own feelings.
You didn't know the answer, but what you did know right now was that you shouldn't be crying in front of Hunter. You couldn't show that you were weak. You were just overthinking and overreacting.
So, you quickly turned your face away from Hunter and wiped the tears from your cheeks. Then you smiled at him, trying to convince himâand yourselfâthat you were fine.
"Thank you, Hunter, really. You understand my feelings even when I donât say anything. But donât worry. I can handle it myself," you said.
You looked at your dorm building, which was already close to where you and Hunter were standing. "Iâm going to head inside now. Thanks for walking me back. And Iâm really glad we ran into each other again," you said goodbye.

You walked into your dorm building with straight steps, forcing a small smile at the security guard who greeted you.
Once you reached your dorm door, you tried to open it as quietly as possible. You hoped that Jules was out or busy in their room. Luckily, Jules seemed to be away because their room door was open and there was no sound at all.
You walked into the bathroom, locked the door, and leaned against it without turning on the light. In the darkness and silence, your walls completely collapsed. You covered your mouth with both hands, muffled the sound of the sobs coming from your throat. Your tears fell heavily in silence.
You hated yourself for being this weak, hated how Deanâs words completely ruined your peace of mind, and hated the fact that you had to hide in a bathroom just to let out this pain. You didn't want to cry on your bed and have Jules suddenly walk in. You wouldn't let anyone see this fragile side of you. Not Hunter, not Jules, not anyone.
In a noisy local bar not far from campus, Dean Di Laurentis was trying to drown his sanity.
Glass after glass of high-proof alcohol passed into his hands. His jaw tightened every time the memory of your hurt and disappointed look flashed in his mind. He was completely frustrated. He absolutely hated the unfamiliar, tight feeling in his chest.
"Hey, handsome. Need some company?"
A girl suddenly sat down next to him, her fingers starting to move playfully on Dean's shoulder. Usually, whether Dean was drunk or sober, he would never refuse instant entertainment like this. He even managed to return the girl's smile and wrap an arm around her waist, intending to take her somewhere quieter to forget about everything.
However, just as they walked out of the bar toward a dark alley intersection, with the girl giggling softly against his neck, Dean suddenly froze in his tracks. His alcohol-fueled brain suddenly replayed your face. Your strength, your bravery, and the way you looked at him like he was the last monster you ever wanted to encounter. Realizing he was holding a complete stranger made Deanâs stomach suddenly turn with nausea.
"Fuck!" Dean hissed quietly.
He roughly pulled his arm away from the girl, making her jump in surprise.
"Dean? What's wrong?"
"Leave," Dean said coldly, his voice raspy and deep.
Without caring about the insults from the girl he left behind, Dean stumbled toward the main road. Luckily, he was sober enough to call a cab to go home.
The wall clock showed 3 AM when Dean opened the door to the Hockey House. Dean walked in with an unstable body, the sharp smell of alcohol radiating from him. His head was spinning wildly, making his steps unsteady until he tripped over the living room carpet and fell flat on his back on the long couch. Without even taking off his shoes, Dean closed his eyes and passed out in a heavy, drunken sleep.

Bright sunlight pierced through the living room windows. Garrett, Tucker, and Logan came down one by one from their rooms to start the day with their workout routines.
Garrett, who was the first to come down, stopped in his tracks near the couch. He wrinkled his nose when he smelled the strong scent of alcohol. "What the hell is this smell?" he asked, then he saw Deanâs pathetic body sprawled on the couch, wearing the exact same clothes from last night after they finished hockey practice.
"Dean?" Tucker approached, then lightly kicked the leg of the couch to wake the guy up. "Hey, wake up. Did you sleep here last night? You smell like shit, man."
Dean groaned, annoyed. The terrible headache from his hangover made his temper flare up instantly. When Garrett tried to pull Deanâs shoulder to make him sit up, Dean suddenly fought back roughly. He yanked his arm away from Garrett and pushed Tucker away, his eyes snapping open with a wild glare, completely bloodshot from the lack of sleep and alcohol.
"Let go of me! Don't touch me, dammit!" Dean snapped in a hoarse, frustrated voice. He gripped his own head, breathing fast and heavy. "Because of you guys, shit... (Name) hates me now. She doesn't want to see me ever again!"
Hearing your name come out of Deanâs rambling lips, Loganâ who was initially just watching from near the kitchen, immediately walked fast toward the couch. His relaxed expression turned cold, and his jaw tightened without him even realizing it.
Logan grabbed the collar of Deanâs t-shirt, forcing the half-drunk guy to look into his eyes. "Dean, look at me," Logan growled, his voice low but firm. "What did you do to (Name) to make you say her name like this? Tell me now."
Garrett looked at Logan and Dean with worry. "Calm down, man."
"Yeah, heâs still not fully conscious," Tucker added.
Dean didn't respond with his usual arrogance. He just stared back at Logan with empty eyes full of deep regret, before finally letting his head drop against the back of the couch in complete defeat, letting the guilt eat him alive.
