I know this post is kinda coming out of nowhere but I got reminded of the OFF remake “controversy” and wanted to say something. I am young, in fact OFF itself is about as old as I am, so I missed out on OFF, until recently when I rediscovered it and found myself incredibly intrigued and excited about this game and the fact that it was getting a remake where my main turn off from playing it so far (the battle system of the original does not look fun to me at all) was being fixed. Then I saw people start complaining, which is fair. You are absolutely allowed to criticize things and I can understand a lot of the points being made, as someone who was once an “undertale fan” I’m also pleased that the dedan theme is getting changed so that it and Dedan can have a more unique identity. But Jesus Christ are some people fucking deranged. I wanted to offer my viewpoint as a young person who missed out on OFF and wanted to join the community, the sheer smug condescension in this fan base has made me very apprehensive to join into this community. Like I get it ok OFF is an incredibly well written, meta-narrative story with tons of dark and complex themes and deep thought provoking questions, but just because you like a smart game doesn’t mean you had anything to do with it or that you yourself are some savant genius. These people remind me of when I was in fifth grade ranting to my friends about how “undertale is the best written story ever!!! It’s the best game ever!!! No other game is as iNtElLeCtUaL as undertale!” Like it’s so cringy they are acting like actual children. I don’t know I’ve just seen a lot of strange arrogance from this fandom and a lot of rude condescension towards young or new fans and just other games in general and I hope these people know that trying to gatekeep young and new fans is the most efficient way to limit a games lifespan. Just wanted to get my perspective out there.
