This is my finished sketchbook. I spent Thursday morning sewing it together
Another thing I did on Tuesday was to experiment with the photocopier and my fabric swatches. I experimented with putting them on the paper models to create further designs
On Tuesday morning, I worked on my design board. It took me a while to come up with a collection name, but I finally settled on "the grotesques"
I'm pretty happy with this line up, I like the combination of colours and the fact that some less than holy outfits have come from church windows
On Monday evening, I coloured in my lineup. I was actually happy with the first colourway I did because I stuck to my colour board.
I replaced the models heads with grotesque from Romsey Abbey.

After that on Monday, I started into the design process for my line up. I started by collaging on paper, then redrawing again and again, until I had the designs I liked
The first thing I did on Monday morning was add the labels to my primary research pages. I think they look way better with name labels
Over the weekend, I also got around to finishing my second fabric swatch. I sewed some plastic, coloured in with sharpie onto black fabric. I should have made the holes in the plastic closer together, because some of the stitches are quite large.
I do, however, rather like the effect, both when lying on paper, and when held up against the light. It is definitely a viable option if I was to make a whole garment.
Over the weekend, I've been working on labels for my primary research pages of my sketchbook, writing them out first in pencil, then going over them in sharpie. The train is maybe not the best place to have done this, but I did it anyways. I plan to cut the name labels out tomorrow, then stick them in to my sketchbook.
Artist Research: Harry Clarke
Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was an Irish illustrator and stained glass window maker. Aisling suggested I look into him a bit more, on account of the modern Florence Nightingale window in Romsey Abbey.
I've seen some of his work in the National Gallery before but I was really surprised when I found out the church in my town has multiple windows by Harry Clarke. I spent a lot of time staring at the windows and not paying attention to mass, when I was forced to be there in primary school, because the windows were far more interesting than everything else going on, so it's cool that they're Harry Clarke windows.
I remember particularly liking these two as a child. The left is St. John, and the right the Virgin Mary, from St. Michael's Church, Ballinasloe

Artist Research: Róisín Pierce
Róisín Pierce is an Irish fashion designer. In her work, she often features Irish crochet lace and and smocking. She is of interest to me because of her use of Irish crochet lace. One of my fabric swatches is lace, and I think if I was to make a garment for this project, I would use crochet lace
Outfits from the 2025 ready-to-wear collection
More information on Róisín Pierce can be found on her website
Artist Research: Jean Paul Gaultier
Jean Paul Gaultier (b. 1952) is a French Fashion designer.
His spring/summer 2007 collection features Catholic imagery, with bondage undertones. This is relevent to my project in that he uses stained glass windows as inspiration for his collection
Artist Research: Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta (1932-2014) was a Dominican fashion designer.
The brand's fall 2024 collection featured these art nouveau style stained glass dresses. They are not made of glass, however, rather plexiglas so they will not shatter. I think they're rather beautiful and I think if I was to make one of my designs, I could use the same sort of idea of plexiglas

Artist Research: Tony Ward
Tony Ward (b. 1970) is a Lebanese fashion designer, based in Paris.
His fall/winter 2018/19 collection "Narrative Windows" is of particular interest to me as it based on stained glass windows, much like my project.
On Friday morning, I worked on a sheet of styles contemporary to my buildings. I'm very pleased with how this on looks but I do need to get more glue, so I can stick things down properly as currently they're a little loose

I've also started working on textile swatches for the fabric board. This is a bit of Irish crochet lace I made. It's not my best work, but it does give the idea of a stained glass window.
I also finished a page on Romsey Abbey's stained glass windows on Thursday, which shows where I chose the colours for my colour board from.
