Rowan

This is my poster for the Hanami festival. I love how it came out but there are several things I'd change now that I'm finished.

I wish I played around with the positioning of the text and gave myself more time to look at different fonts.

The colours turned out great and the composition works really well. I wish I add more elements but that's a personal want as I enjoy maximalism styles.

Another thing I should've outlined the characters as everything else besides the lanterns has a coloured outline.

These were my original final proposals that I thought weren't working but my tutors said they were better.

This one was too linear and too central. Nothing interesting for the eyes.

This was my second one and it worked a lot better. It framed the characters and the lanterns added a little something. Allowing the eyes to move around. It ended up being the template I used for my final poster.

These proposals got rejected. They were seen as something that you would see as a pamphlet rather than as a poster.

I was rather disappointed as I was quite proud of them. These were heavily inspired by sanrio posters. A part of my research for my posters.

Though I do like the font I used for the title and want to keep that soft squishy value of it.

Final element combination

For the final combination of our sketches, I decided to focus on the atmosphere. Since I want to create a night themed poster for the Hanami festival, the lanterns and lighting ended up being the most important part.

Taking from our 24 sketches. We had to further combine elements. Taking 2-3 into one. This is where I decided to create my sakura characters. Japan has many mascots for events, media and even towns.

Each one is an individual petal and four or so would create flower together. A critique I got was that out of context, they make very little sense.

Though I've decided to pursue them further as I've fallen in love with them.

This is my final digital moodboard. Personally I love how it all turned out. Though the vector art of the branch is a little too detailed in comparison to the other elements.

Our brief is to create a poster for a festival. I began my research by looking at various cultural and food festivals in Asia and Eastern Europe as that where my interests lied.

I also had to take material and information available into consideration which is how I ended up choosing the Cherry Blossom festival in Japan.

We selected a lego piece and had to create scenarios or items in witch the lego piece could be placed into.

These are the 4 compositions I created. My favourite being the eyes peering from the sewers as there was an element of mystery, same goes for the call buttons but my classmates chose the people rowing the boat.

These were my mid stage drawings. I decided to be experimental with colour and have them appear ailen but also doing a common activity. But also having to take into account that the eye should be drawn to the boat itself.

I personally preferred the one with two figure as it felt more intimate but in the end the 5 figures were chosen.

My project was based around the movement of my emotions and tying into what I wore each day as the two are connected heavily to each other. I explored each element individually and then together in the disciplines I chose.

Print

I started with print and enjoyed it immensely. Being able to work with the materials directly allowed me to feel more at ease at experimenting. I looked at representing my emotions through the movement of clothing. Twisting it and changing it to represent various emotions.

Fashion Design

Seeing as I decided to explore clothing, it would be a little too obvious to explore clothing in fashion design. So I decided to put my emotions to fabric and see what would come out. It was enjoyable but definitely was the discipline I struggled with the most. Mostly due to my inexperience in the subject.

Graphic Design

This is where I put the two together. I wish I had more time time to explore graphics as I feel I put the least time in it. But it was the one I enjoyed the most as I desired to represent the two aspects of my project in a way that would speak for itself.

I decided to take the design from the stamp making workshop and rework in fashion design.

Using a t-shirt I sketched out an idea. Each layer would be a different colour. Then going into print, using the letter blocks to add text.

But when I presented my idea. I was told to not stick to two dimensions. So instead I I stitched the design and then pulled on it to create the gatherings. The whole thing was following my gut.

I made a little notebook made from my risograph prints. I don't know if I'll end up using it for my project but it was good to use skills I gained from the first semester again.

I created an etching on a photocopied picture of my turtleneck all squished toegther a few weeks ago. This was based off the prints from Maeve Coulter. I final got around to printing it today.

After having finished printing, I added some pink accents to make the second piece pop out usibg tissue paper and I love the result more than the orginal.

I didn't end of up taking photos of my progress but this is the result of two weeks worth of emotions.

I wish I had made it larger as I would have been able to continue exploring this concept. Something I started doing near the end was using darker fabrics if the emotion was stronger, an example being the green. The darker green showing my weekend of being sick and bed ridden.

But overall I am happy with how it turned out.
