#loom weaving

"Please be a dear boy and destroy this note." is a queer art piece I made for a textile art show that'll take place in July.

We often hear things like "queer is just a trend" or "there weren't as many queer people before", and you know what? Queer people have always been here. We've been here from the beginning of history.

So I took this quote from a transcript of a police raid in a queer space in 1934 (link, National Archive Catalogue reference: MEPO 3/758) and I referenced Wilde's green carnation.

And on top of that, I decided to use a traditional sardinian weaving technique (pibiones) to do the textile, AND I made a font based on the Olivetti lettera 32 font (the typewriter my mother used when she was young; I wanted a touch of personal/familiar history as well).

I was really struggling with this technique at first but i finally got it and am now working on these inverted roosters!

This pattern is the entire reason I invested in a tempo treadle system for my baby wolf. My brain doesn’t do well with keeping my place in long sequences and I constantly second guess myself if I’m manually tracking.

Having a little computer buddy that beeps in annoyance every time I hit the wrong treadle is great for me

My first project on my brand new loom! Turns out it fits perfectly in my bedroom (with a little furniture rearrangement). I promise I’m not rawdogging the fiber inhalation I got a really good air filter for it.

I’m using the same alpaca/wool mix I used for the sweater because both my parents are obsessed with it. Since I’m weaving my dad a scarf he got to pick the vibes. It’s so cool but it’s actually kind of a nightmare to weave with because it’s so fine and stretchy. I did check to make sure it’s strong enough first because I’m never in the mood to fix a broken warp thread.

Also being a multimedia artist has its perks, I realized immediately while winding on the warp that I needed something inbetween the layers. Turns out I have the perfect amount of raw canvas lying around leftover from when I had to build my own painting canvases for class.
