Drawbridge animation assignment

First animation assignment to create a 3/4 view of a characters head and shoulders

Here is my finished animation. I'm quite happy with it. The timing is slightly off towards the end. I really enjoyed making the puppets, however, the sets were quite difficult because I had very few materials. The process of stop motion was tricky and I had to redo some of the shots a few times. I was able to reuse some of the shots which made the process easier. Overall, I'm happy with the result and really enjoyed making this animation.

I really like seeing how each shot looks as a still from the animation. I think it's interesting to see the behind the scenes of shooting being compared to the final shots.

These are more of the sets I built for the animation. They're made from cardboard boxes covered in paper which could be painted over for different sets. I didn't have enough cardboard for all the sets so I shot everything I need per set and then reused the cardboard to make the next one. I made a lot of the props out of paper and card.

I started shooting the first two opening shots with the sets I had built. In the profile walking shot I moved the foreground and background using marked out lines. I kept the figure walking in place which made it easier to animate.

This is another reference I looked at while working on my animation. I love the use of felt throughout the animation as if gives extra movement to the piece. I also liked the use of different character scales for the closeups of hands and feet, I think it's a really useful technique.

This is a video showing the making of a stop motion animation that I watched for reference. I really enjoyed the simple style of the animation. It's very interesting to see how the sets and characters are made using household materials. The sets were made from cardboard and boxes which I want to do for my animation.

I made a small version of the jail set for the opening shot to decide how to build it. I am going to paint some of the background onto the back wall instead of making a longer set that I won't be using in the scene.

After making the characters I made a list of the props I needed to make and the different sets I need to build. I can reuse some sets for multiple shots which will cut down on the time needed to build.

This is a look at my first attempt (wooden model) at making the costume versus the my final version (felt puppet) . I added extra details like the collar and I sewed a small patch of the pillowcase onto the jacket for their inmate numbers. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I made the shoes out of the same black clay I used for the leg foundation.

I used a light grey pillowcase to make the costumes. I first drew out the pattern and then painted the navy stripes. I cutout each piece and then sewed them together. I really enjoyed figuring out a sewing pattern for the miniature clothes and then making each piece.

This is a time-lapse of my process for making the foundations of the top of each puppet. I found the felt gave a better shape to the puppet under the clothing.
