Just because you have a shift of something (phantom, mental, astral, whatever) doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a kintype.

Cameo shifts are shifts of things that aren’t your kintype - whatever kind of shift (phantom, mental, etc.) they may be. They may be one-time occurrences, they may show up regularly in response to a specific stimulus, or (in more unusual cases) they may be just as regular as shifts of your kintype but without any other factors (behaviors, instincts, homesickness, etc) to make them actually relevant to your sense of identity.

(For example: I experience phantom shifts of canine/feline ears every so often, usually as a response to me either expressing emotion with them (ie pinning back) or being surprised by something and them pricking up. However, I don’t really identify as canine or feline in any way, so they’re just cameo shifts.)

Anyone can theoretically experience cameo shifts, including non-’kin folk. In fact, there’s a fairly well-known phenomenon of non-’kin people suddenly starting to get phantom shifts when they first discover the otherkin community and start reading about them a bunch; generally these shifts go away within a few weeks to months, and it’s the reason a lot of older ‘kin folk may tell you to take some time away from the community and intentionally try not to think about it if your phantom shifts only started after finding the community, to see if the shifts persist. It may be something you feel is relevant to your experiences, or it may even be linked somehow, or it may not be all that big a deal to you.
