It’s been 5 days of Donation Drive, and if you missed anything this week, here’s what has been going on.

Thanks to everyone who’s donated. Remember, all donors, no matter how much you give, get a new mixtape album, the Mikal kHill remixes album, and a BOOM! Studios digital comics sampler. 

The Donation Drive is the only time during the year I accept donations, and really the only time I ask for money for the 100s of free tracks I release through my site. It’s how I keep the lights on, how I keep the site running, make merch, make albums, and travel for shows. Take a second and consider donating if you’ve ever dug my music.

For those who don’t know, I release tons of free content every year, and only one time a year I ask for donations and give out tons of rewards in return.

Who created Caitlin Snow, the alter ego of Firestorm super-villain Killer Frost, who appears regularly on The Flash?

According to DC Entertainment, nobody.

So, I’ve had an overwhelming positive response to yesterday’s post about DC Entertainment’s policy regarding “derivative” characters and creator equity.

One point I’d like to make clear is that this isn’t entirely an issue about money.

Yes, money is involved, but thanks to the way DC and Warners structure their in-house deals, the actual payout for the use of a character on an episode of The Flash or Arrow is ridiculously small. (I receive an average of $47 for each appearance of Felicity Smoak, for example; nothing to sneeze at, of course, but I’m not gonna be buying any mansions with my comic book character profits anytime soon.)

The bigger issue here, for me, is one of respect for the creative contributions of the writers and artists who brought characters like Felicity Smoak and Caitlin Snow and Barry Allen into life in the first place.

By claiming the work I did, or that Sterling Gates and Derlis Santacruz did, is simply “derivative” and thus, unoriginal and unworthy of acknowledgment and compensation, DC is disrespecting our contributions as creators. The company is asserting that our work means nothing.

That’s despicable, and honestly, that’s what impelled me to write yesterday’s blog.

Of course, a few bucks would be nice too.
