This week is Trans Awareness Week which closes with Trans Day of Remembrance, and while I’d love to open this with a message of positivity and progress, the reality is that especially for trans folks in America the level of fear and uncertainty is higher than it has been in a long time. Awareness is important, and I hope you’ll all consider sharing out a post about this week and your support for the trans community. There’s still plenty to be gained from visibility and education. But as much as awareness is important, so is action.
If you are able, I ask you to consider giving to help trans folks in need. There are many trans folks trying to get new passports and other documents before any changes are made, and plenty of financial need for essential medical care - hormones, surgery, hair removal, etc. - that is often not covered, or not fully covered, by insurance. You could also support one (or more) of the following organizations that work to advance and protect the trans community:
Trans Lifeline
Sylvia Rivera Law Project
Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund
National Center for Transgender Equality
Transgender Law Center
Gender Spectrum
I remain hopeful. We may be facing a couple of tough years, but trans folks are tenacious. We will get through this. But now more than ever we need allies, advocates, and the strength of our community.
