December 31 “There is one job that we can do superlatively well, and there isn’t anything that can keep us from doing it if we are serious in wanting to. That is the job we do on ourselves, inside ourselves. It means clearing out a whole mess of false values, unrealistic ambitions, and worn-out resentments, and putting in their place the qualities we want to have – kindness, tolerance, friendliness ... We can begin to see what the real values of life are, and they are very different from the hazy, distorted dreams we had.”
New York, N.Y., August 1948 “Those Depressions–Make Them Work for Good!” Best of Grapevine, Volume 1
Grapevine Quote December 21 “No one can express love and self-pity at the same moment; showing concern for others helps us to see how foolish we have been.”
Dayton, OH, April 1962 “Ever Been on a Dry Drunk” Best of Grapevine, Volume 1
Grapevine Quote December 10 "Happiness is a by-product – the extra dividend of giving without any demand for a return."
AA Co-Founder, Bill W., January 1958 "The Next Frontier: Emotional Sobriety" The Language of the Heart
Grapevine Quote December 9 "If we can stop this frantic drive to prove that we are remarkable people, it is quite likely that we will settle down and really enjoy whatever life has to offer us."

Well, fancy that...
Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends. 🤓
Grapevine Quote November 16 “Whether I conceive of God as a set of immutable cosmic laws or as an old man with a white robe and matching beard is totally and gloriously irrelevant. All that matters are my values and attitudes and how I act upon them.”
Culver City, Calif., May 1977 “Faith Is Action” Spiritual Awakenings
Grapevine Quote November 10 “I realize now that most of the problems in my life were a direct result of my attempts to handle my own life, to be in control of my own destiny. I am grateful that today, sober, I can still say my life has ‘become unmanageable.’”
College Park, Md., June 1982 Spiritual Awakenings

November 8 “To know yourself is not done just by reviewing your ‘misdeeds’; they are not you ... Your doubts, fears, and apprehensions, your immature cravings, your self-indulgence ... they are all committed by your physical body, guided by false instincts and imagination, instead of by your real self, which is the soul – the spirit within. That is where your conscience is, and your wisdom and your strength – which no one can hurt but you.”
New York, N.Y., November 1946 “Sobriety for Ourselves” Thank You for Sharing: Sixty Years of Letters to the Grapevine
November 2 Grapevine Quote “Suffering is no longer a menace to be evaded at any cost. When it does come, no matter how grievously, we realize that it too has its purpose. It is our great teacher because it reveals our defects and so pushes us forward into the paths of progress. The pain of drinking did just this for us. And so can any other pain.”
AA Co-Founder, Bill W., November 1958 Editorial AA Grapevine
November 2 KEEPING OPTIMISM AFLOAT The other Steps can keep most of us sober and some- how functioning. But Step Eleven can keep us grow- ing, . . . — THE LANGUAGE OF THE HEART, p. 240 A sober alcoholic finds it much easier to be optimistic about life. Optimism is the natural result of my finding myself gradually able to make the best, rather than the worst, of each situation. As my physical sobriety continues, I come out of the fog, gain a clearer perspective and am better able to determine what courses of action to take. As vital as physical sobriety is, I can achieve a greater potential for myself by developing an ever-increasing willingness to avail myself of the guidance and directionof a Higher Power. My ability to do so comes from my learning-and practicing-the principles of the A.A. program. The melding of my physical and spiritual sobriety produces the substance of a more positive life.
