When Matt finally reaches you, you're already shivering. The warmth you once radiated slowly leaving you as the pavement is painted red. The crimson stain shines in the moonlight, as it grows bigger.

"No, no, no… please." He can smell the blood in the air, taste the sweet metal on his tongue. He doesn't have to reach for your pulse, he can already hear it slowing down.

"Call 911!" He screams at his phone. He has to get you help, you're already so cold.

Da-dum, da-dum, da-dum.

Your heartbeat is still there, the sound that's been his anchor for all these years, the sound he yearns for every single day. But it's fading.

Da-dum… da-dum… da-dum…

"No, baby. Please. Just… hang on a little longer." He begs, voice almost breaking when he feels the way you're shivering in his arms.

He yells the address to the operator, screaming for them to come and fast. He doesn't even care if they see him in his suit, you're more important. You're everything. His reason for waking up each morning.

Da-dum…… da-dum……

"Please, just… fight for me sweetheart. Just a little longer."

The operator keeps asking questions, but he doesn't listen. Nothing exists but you and you're slipping away.

"Matty… I-I love you." You're voice so weak, so small, tainted with fear.

"No, don't say it like that. Don't say it like it's goodbye."

Da-dum…

A single little weak beat. When he first heard your heart, he swore it was the most beautiful sound he'd ever heard. The sound he would want to listen to all days from that to his last breath. The sound he sound solace in all those hard nights where he didn't know if he could keep on fighting.

The sound that was his foundation, his home. The way your heartbeat would pick up when you laughed. The way it would skip a beat when he kissed you.

Da-dum…

He pleads to the heavens, asking God not to take you, not to take you home. He needs you here.

Da…. Dum…

He thought there would be more time, that somehow you would always be there. He swears to God he will give anything to have you longer. He needs more time.

Da…… dum……

You're so cold, so weak. So still… Holding you closer, he pleads over and over. Don't take her from me. Please let her live.

And then…. Nothing… the faint sound of your heart is gone, leaving him in the defeaning silence.

"No… no, no, please…" he pleads, holding you closer, kissing you softly as he brushes a stray hair away from your forehead. You're limb in his arms, so cold. Desperately he listens for your heartbeat, but it's not there. Gone, like he wishes his was. He would never forget the moment when your heart stopped and his keps beating.

Life isn't measured in minutes, it's measured in heartbeats.

You pace around the boat and bite on your nails, “what’s taking him so fucking long?” you face your friends. You’re getting impatient, your boyfriend went to the lake to look for a possible gate and he’s been there longer than expected. You start to palpitate, your right leg bouncing anxiously. Many possibilities are popping in your mind - awful ones to be exact. 

What if he’s stuck?

Drowning?

Got a cramp and can’t swim up?

What if Vecna took him?

Your thoughts get interrupted by a loud splash. “Found a gate down there” Steve says as he tries to catch his breath. You lean towards him and smack his forehead, “I thought something happened to you!” you scold. You hate his selflessness - putting himself in danger because he just won’t let you and your friends join him or go first. He’s such a good person and sometimes you hate him for being too good especially in situations like this.

“Y/N don’t wo-” Steve gets cut off when he suddenly gets pulled down the lake. You immediately jump after him, not even bothering to take off your shoes, knowing how much you hate it when they get wet or when even the smallest thing enters your shoe, it just freaks your senses out. You swim further down, trying to reach for Steve who’s ankle is being held by some sort of vine - pulling him to a portal with a bright red light flashing through, you assume it’s the gate. You swim as fast as you can, frantically kicking and sweeping your arms as you try to reach for him but it all just happened so quickly, he’s already brought into the Upside Down. Your heart is raising and your body almost out of oxygen, but you continue to swim and swim until you get in. You climb out of the gate; Robin, Nancy, and Eddie following soon after. An agonized scream erupts and you spot Steve being choked by a bat and his sides being bitten by two more. You run towards him as you tightly clench your hand into a fist, causing the bats attacking him to crush into bits, their blood splattering.

You also had special abilities like El, superpowers is what your friends would tell you. You’re older than her, the same age as Steve. You were taken to the lab at an older age compared to the rest of the kids there which meant you knew who you are, who your amily was and what Brenner have done to them in order to get you. You also had other skills: healing abilities and manipulating memories of others and yourself - you can bring them back, erase them permanently, change them, and protect them from being touched by others. And so Brenner could not get rid of your memories from your life before getting taken no matter how hard he tries, even the kids can’t get inside your head.

Soon you and El have managed to escape and the rest was history.

More bats are now coming your way, you quickly turn to them and stop them from flying towards you. Both your nostrils bleeding and your body starting to tremble, “take Steve and run!” you instruct. Eddie and Nancy helps him up and go to the nearest place to hide: Skull Rock. You forcefully bring the bats down and kill them. You then grab Robin‘s hand who was left behind to wait for you and go after the rest, Robin practically pulling you as your body felt frail from all the swimming and especially with the amount of bats you just stopped.

You arrive at Skull Rock and kneel beside Steve who’s wincing in pain, a hideous purplish-red mark around his neck and the flesh on his sides bitten off by the flying creatures. You crawl closer to him and place a hand above his wounds, healing them completely. You then move up to his neck but he grabs your hand and stops you, “my neck’s not that bad”. You try get out of his hold but he had a strong grip on you, “please stop. I don’t want to drain your energy. Y-you’re literally about to collapse any second now. You’ve done enough love” he says, worried. He noticed the way your body was shaking from not just the cold but also from exhaustion, blood was still coming out of your nose and some were threatening to come out of your ears.

“He’s right, Y/N. You need to have the strength to escape” Nancy speaks up. Steve wraps an arm around your shoulder and pulls you down to lay on him, “rest” he says firmly. You were too weak to protest so you do as you were told, your friends do the same and sit across you both. Steve feels your body still stiff and tensed as you try to stay alert for possible danger that could come, he holds you tighter and rub your arm.

“We’ll be safe for a while. Try to calm down, just for a little bit” he reassures.
