(this is my first masterpost sorry if it’s bad) A bullet journal has a lot of uses. A planner, homework reminders, to-do lists- but understandably, some pages could use a little of inspiration. And what better inspiration than from artists? Even without a bullet journal, quotes can be a great thing to decorate journals, your room, etcetera. Study Tips By Someone Who Had Mixed Feelings About School (but still did quite well and is relatively successful in adulthood)

Okay, these first ones are more like life tips, but I learnt the hard way that to do well in a pressurised environment like school, you need to take a holistic approach.

Focus. I don’t mean, like, sit for fifteen minutes at a time! I mean, why are you studying? When I was 15 I had a bad falling out with a friend and to distract myself I spent half an hour every evening studying my Chemistry textbook. I won a progress award that year and my grades improved across all my subjects, just because I would rather study than think about how shit I felt. Maybe you want to be a doctor or win an Oscar, maybe you go to the library because it means you’re not at home, maybe you want straight As so you can go to a university as far away from your town as possible. Just think about why and keep that in mind (make a bracelet you’ll take off after exams are finished; put a photo of your dream school into your planner; write inspirational quotes on sticky notes on your bedroom wall).

Remember you’re a person first and a student second. In a few years, this will just be a time in your life when you had to study. Your memories might be good or bad (try to make them good!) but they will just be memories. One day this will be over and you’ll be onto the next thing in your life. With that in mind…

Your grades do not define you. I’m still pissed about my D grade Religious Studies A Level (I failed the first part twice. Twice!) because I can still recite parts of my course and I loved that class, but on exam days, it just wasn’t happening. I had terrible problems with my wrists throughout my A Levels that made writing painful, and when I got painkillers they would make my stomach hurt so badly that I nearly puked in one exam (I failed that paper too). I was angry and bitter – with myself, with my school, with people who didn’t have the same trouble I did – for years. I know I could have done better in my A Levels if things had been different, but they weren’t. It took me a while to make my peace with myself, but I did the best I could at the time. That’s all you can do.

Right, now onto the tangible stuff:

Take time to relax, or you’ll hate every school-based memory. Set up little treats for yourself after you’ve done each exam/piece of work, and make sure you take time off to sleep and eat and exercise and live like a regular human (eating dinner or going to bed, by the way, is not a treat). People make a big deal out of working all night and surviving on ambition and instant coffee, but that is a fast way to a breakdown. If you’ve got the cash, set up big treats for after exam season, like a holiday or an event. Look forward, literally. I really recommend the Headspace app; meditating is the only thing other than writing that gets me out of my messy head. I’ve used it for four years on and off, and it’s probably prevented about five breakdowns, just through teaching me to b r e a t h e.

Use the tools you were given (but remember you control them). The Internet is incredibly helpful… until it’s a distraction. So are trips to the library or the coffee shop or study groups. If you have trouble sitting down to work or putting your phone down when you go to bed, use the Freedom app and plugin (best health investment I’ve ever made, after Headspace) to block various sites and apps. Set rules when you’re studying with friends or out and about. Starbucks is there to help you; you’re not there to give Starbucks all your time and money.

Ask for help when you are struggling. Whether it’s study, home or life related, your teachers are there to help when you’re in trouble. So are your friends (and family, hopefully). Keep lines of communication open, because when shit hits the fan – and it will – you can’t be an army of one.

Try to work out how you study. I still have no idea what ‘type’ of learner I am; I’ve tried most of the study techniques over the years (for things like driving tests and job interviews as well as school) and different methods have worked at different times. If in doubt, get yourself a nice notebook and revision cards and some coloured pens (you can get an entire stationery set in most supermarkets or ‘cheap’ shops for less than £5; they do the same job as your £30 luxury notepad). I find that explaining something to someone with no knowledge of my subject helps (so it’s like you’re teaching them your course). I’ve also done activities like texting Shakespeare quotations in emojis and poetry-based Monopoly with friends over dinner – try thinking outside the textbook if you’re disengaged. If in doubt, watch the dramatised version of a book or historical event and point out the inaccuracies (I had a teacher who let his class watch 300 to point out the historical inaccuracies. Everyone appreciated the teacher. Everyone learnt that 300 is not a source. Everyone was happy).

Forget #studyblr for a minute. There’s a lot of beautiful, expensive stationery and photos alongside holier-than- thou advice by fellow students, and it can be intimidating and condescending in equal measure. But those students are just like you: they’re tired, stressed and probably want a bath. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own Apple Mac or branded notepaper or fountain pens. Those things are added extras: what matters is that you get your shit together, then get your studying shit together.

A clean house is a sign of wasted life ! 

Yes, even if you’re taking the maximum credit load. Because if I can do it, you can do it too. Note: My credit load also included a handful of honors courses. 

Side-note: I’m going to be a junior (how??) and an RA (!!!) in the fall. Life moves fast. College moves faster. Anyways, 

Here are my top tips: 

1. LOOK AT THE SYLLABUS AND WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. This is step number one, and it’s not up for debate. If you do this, there’ll be no surprises, and if there are: point it out to the professor (a simple, ??? this wasn’t on the syllabus ??, usually works). Also, you have to check and see what constitutes as an A in that class. Sometimes it’s a 90, sometimes it’s not. (a 96 was an A- in one of my classes last semester. I’m so serious.)

2. Get a calendar. Not a planner. One of those giant calendars with puppies or something on it and write down everything you have to do for the month. Put it above your desk. This helps A LOT because you can see everything you have coming up for the next few weeks, instead of jus playing it day-by-day. 

3. It is OK to use ratemyprofessor. Sometimes it can be really helpful, but pay attention to the more in depth reviews that talk about what the homework, tests, quizzes and projects are like (instead of “her lectures are boring :///) 

4. Sit in the front of your class. You’ll be more likely to pay attention and less likely to scroll through instagram. (by the way, mine is @parissdb :) It also grabs your professors attention, so even if you’re shy, they’ll at least know your face.

5. Do that extra credit. A lot of professors offer it in the beginning of the semester, and hardly anyone does it because no one’s thinking past tomorrow. It may be what saves you in the long run. 

6. Figure out your best method of note-taking. For me, it’s good ol pen and paper. It helps me remember everything. Some people prefer typing it out. This is beneficial bc it makes it easier for you to find exactly what you’re looking for. (Thank you, command + F)

7. Put your effort into the percentages. If an assignment is worth 1% of your grade, do it well, but don’t exhaust yourself. It’s 1%!!!! If it comes down to it, spend more time studying for that exam that’s worth 30% than the group project worth 20. 

8. Please. Stop studying what you already know. We’re all guilty of it. It makes you feel better knowing you have chapters 1-3 down, even if you don’t know 4-7. The key to studying is to learn what you don’t know. 

9. Learn how to study. (Yes, it’s actually a skill that has to be learned.) I’m the biggest procrastinator I know, especially when it comes to studying. But I’ve found that studying 2 days before an exam usually does the trick for me. I create a master study guide during day 1 and study it all on day 2. Depending on what time the exam is, I may review on the morning of day 3. 

10. SAVE SOME TIME FOR FUN ffs. Seriously. You don’t have to study 24/7, and I don’t know about y’all but my attention span was not built for that.

I might add more to this later, or make another post because I could give these tips for ever and ever. But hopefully this helps someone out there. 

Note: I’m not the best at maths, and I didn’t take the ACT, so I asked my friend Danielle who is both a maths genius and an ACT veteran to write this :D

Hey! Here’s some tips on how to get a stellar score on the ACT Math section.

First: REMAIN CALM.  It is going to be ok. No matter the score you get, life will go on. As my Calc teacher told us, what is the worst that could happen? You get a bad score and then what? It is just a piece of paper, your score does not define you or your future.

Now, let’s talk math.

The questions get more difficult as you go, so try to finish the first 30 in less than 30 minutes

No matter what, keep moving. I you get stuck, pick an answer and keep going. It is better to spend time on questions you might actually get right than ones you definitely do not know how to answer

For example, if they are asking some word problem about a teenager’s age, and you get 72, you probably did something wrong.

All problems, however, can be solved without a calculator, and oftentimes it is easier if you refrain from using your calculator.

If you are very concerned about not having a formula sheet, look over mine (or your own right before the test and write them at the top once the test starts)

On the ACT (and SAT actually) no points are deducted for wrong answers so guess!

Try to make reasonable assumptions though! Going back to the example of a teenager, if the answers are a) 3 b) 12 c) 13 d) 17 e) 72 you can safely disclose a and e because teens are not 3 or 72 years old.

TESTS/ PROGRAMMES/ CERTIFICATES, ETC:

GSCE -  General Certificate of Secondary Education is a two-year programme in a specific subject taken by school students in UK. Students start GCSEs at age 14 in year 10 and then they take the public examinations at age 16 in year 11. A level -  a qualification in a specific subject typically taken by school students aged 16–18 in UK (after GCSEs). A Levels are worked towards over two years and split into two parts, with one part studied in each year:

A1 Level or AS Level - the first part of the A level.

A2 Level - the second part of the A level.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the USA and Canada, which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations.

International Baccalaureate (IB) can refer to the international educational foundation, any of the 4 programmes it offers, or the diploma or certificates awarded at the end of the programme.

IELTS -  International English Language Testing System is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers.

TOEFL - Test Of English as a Foreign Language is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in American universities. Though, it is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions.

ACT - American College Testing is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions in USA. 

SAT -  Scholastic Assessment Test  is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in USA.

EDUCATION STAGES/ DEGREES:

Major - is the academic discipline to which an undergraduate student formally commits in USA and Canada. A student who successfully completes the courses prescribed in an academic major qualifies for an undergraduate (Bachelor’s) degree.

Double major -  a student who declares two academic majors is said to have a double major.

Undergrad student - a student taking up undergraduate education.  

Undergraduate education - is a level of education between secondary education and a master’s degree. When a student completes an undergraduate education they get a Bachelor’s degree.

Grad student - a student taking up graduate or postgraduate education.

Graduate education - is a level of education taken up after getting a Bachelor’s degree. When a student complete a graduate education they either get a Master’s or Doctorate degrees.

Textbooks are fucking expensive, and if your professor doesn’t require a physical copy (most don’t - they just want you to have the book at hand. Or maybe even not. Some professors literally give no fucks about whether you have the book or not) and you don’t mind having your copy as an electronic copy - this is the post for you!

Most textbook companies put out new editions every year or so even though there isn’t really that much new information. Sometimes they’ll eliminate questions if it’s something like a math or chemistry book or they’ll add in a few sentences about updated legislation (the professor I work for teaches human sexuality, and the newest edition of the book she uses included the 2009 decision to allow same-sex couples have hospital visitation rights). These new editions are pointless and only created to make the textbook company money and to cut down on students selling to each other. You’re going to ignore that. We love older editions. Make sure when you’re searching on the following sites that you don’t include the edition number to give you more search results. If one with your edition comes up - great! If not, you can usually stick to something one to three editions behind without any major changes.

I should also mention that checking your school’s library for a book you can check out to either keep for the semester or scan the pages you need is also a great option. I saved $90 the semester after I wrote this by borrowing a chemistry lab manual from the library and just scanning the labs I needed instead of buying one for myself that I couldn’t even sell later on.

Sites you should be searching:

FilesTube - FilesTube searches THE ENTIRE INTERNET for files uploaded to file-sharing websites such as MegaUpload, Mediafire, or WuUpload. Sometimes people will upload pdf files of your textbook. This is always an important first search.

Google Books - You usually won’t find your textbook on Google Books, but it’s always worth a look. Sometimes pages are missing because it’s only a preview of the book, but again - always worth a look.

Scribd - People upload documents to Scribd and by becoming a member (free!) or connecting through Facebook (if you’re lazy!), you can download whatever files you may find. This sometimes includes textbooks.

BookBoon - website specifically for finding pdf versions of textbooks

Curriki - free open source materials

Flat World Knowledge - free business, humanities, and science textbooks

Open Culture

Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources

TorrentScan - textbooks are also uploaded to torrent sites in some cases - you may as well check.

If push comes to shove, you can try variations of googling “textbook name torrent” or “textbook name download” or “textbook name download free.” Sometimes things pop up and I never would have known about them.

LibraryPirate is a torrent search site specifically for textbooks. (Added 10 October 2011)
