Last July my dad went scuba diving and never came back. This is our first Father's Day without him, and while I want to tell about how wonderful he was, I'd rather tell a story about the time he took me to my first middle school dance. It had rained that day, but as we rode along the long country roads, the sky began to clear and a rainbow took shape. He glanced at me, asking if I wanted to take a detour to find the end of the rainbow. I said, "Yes," not knowing that his motive was really to just spend more time with me. So he turned onto a dirt road and we chased the colors in the sky. We talked about what we thought would be at the end, knowing that it likely ended in someone's pasture. We never found the end of it, and I don't know how long the detour lasted, but I eventually made it to my dance. When we got to the school, most of my peers were outside socializing. Before getting out of his truck, I hugged him and told him I loved him. After I got out, a boy started making fun of me, "Ohhh! Kayla's a little Daddy's girl." Not knowing that Dad was watching, waiting for my response, I lifted my chin and flicked my hair, saying, "I love my dad. Sorry you don't know what that feels like." Even as a 6th grader, I felt strength in my love for my father and his love for us. That is not something that has changed, and it's not something that can be taken away. Last week I quit my job as a project engineer. I knew it wasn't for me from the start, but I stuck through it until the sexism became too much. I stuck through it until I discovered they refuse to hire black people (seriously, wtf). I stuck through it until I'd had enough of putting off the things I care about. It was a bold move and I don't know what will happen from here, but I am excited to not be tied to something that doesn't serve me. I am resourceful and I love this city, so I don't feel worried about jumping into the unknown.
