OC Questions - Artist Edition
[I don't want to keep reblogging it and making a hella long post so hopefully this is better?]
Answering this time for Ibis
1. If your OC does any kind of art, which type/subject do they devote most of their efforts toward?
1a. Is there a particular reason they gravitate towards this?
He views his mixology as art. Art meets science...and magic. In general he always loved making potions and just doesn't limit himself to what any recipe book may say. He also likes making thing in 'gaseous state' if you understand the wording (yep, smoke) but he much prefers making them liquid.
2. Is art a hobby or a profession to them?
2a. If they have a different or second occupation, what is it? How do they feel about either?
Well, it's basically a profession. It's his only job besides being a King. Which he loves too.
3. Does their art get much recognition? If not, is this by design (ex: the character purposefully keeps their art private)?
Oh it does. His mom may have scolded him growing up for messing around with alcohol and hallucinogens but even she couldn't deny the ingenuity of his work. Everyone that tastes his stuff raves about it.
4. Where do they get their art supplies? Do they purchase them somewhere or make their own?
4a. If they purchase them, how much does this eat into their budget?
4b. If they make/collect their own supplies, how arduous is the process? Do they truly buy zero components, or do they have to purchase ingredients from somewhere?
AH yes, this one's fun. He started getting his ingredients from either his mom's garden, the bar at his house, or his friends (but mainly Kiki) because when your besty's family has an apothecary shop you source ingredients from them. Now that he's moving around he carries as much of a stock as he can but grows his own if needed (or if he can't just get his hands on some quality ingredients fast enough).
He's now leveraging the fact that he's King to have people grow supplies for him and even make the most popular mixes. He still grows some stuff himself because he wants to ensure to have the ingredient or it's just best picked fresh.
5. How long, on average, do they work on any particular piece?
5a. What is the longest amount of time they have spent on something?
Well, if he's making up something new he'll be at it all night, many nights, if needed. He may give up and come back to it later, be it months or even years later. Stuff he's perfected he'll make in 5 minutes. He'll also prepare big batches ahead of time whenever possible.
6. Where and starting from what age did they develop their skills? Were they self-taught? Did they attend a class/school or have a mentor? How long did they study?
Well, Katra taught all her witch kids to use their magic and help her with potions since they were toddlers. As soon as he was old enough to get his own potion kit, Ibis had it...and mastered all the mixes that could be made with it. As early as 8 years old he found the bar and thought it'd be fun to mix up the liquids there - with no real care that they were alcohol. He made a pumpkin spice rum mix which was obviously confiscated but tested by his parents (to their surprise, cuz it was good). He got banned from the bar and a new cauldron and ingredients to try out instead. Of course, this is Ibis so he ignored the ban whenever possible.
The only books he willingly learned were those of recipes and once he exhausted those available to him, he started making things up.
7. Is there any particular piece that has a lot of emotional significance to them? What is the nature of their sentiment?
7a. Are there pieces to which they feel little or no attachment? What were they thinking while working on it?
Well this is weird because it's not quite the same now, is it? He's proud of his 'tasting colors' concoctions. It was one of his first inventions.
He doesn't care for 'boring' potions or those that have negative side effects. He likes pleasing people, not pissing them off (unless it's his mom, that's just a different game).
8. Is there a piece that continues to frustrate them? If so, why?
He finds it frustrating that he hasn't managed to create something to get rid of his nightmares. The Oblivion he made was actually his first attempt, which he had deemed a failure because it only made him forget people, not events, and only while it was 'active'. But it came in handy in Bridgeport!
9. How do they feel when revealing their art to others? Are they coolheaded? Nervous? Proud?
9a. Is there anyone's opinion they typically value more than others? If so, why?
He's a show off! He takes pride in giving people what they want. And naturally, the approval of big chested women is one he seeks out.
(AT this age he just wanted the general approval of people, and for his sister and her friends to think he was cool - they did (except his sister, she was more worried about how their mom was going to punish her for 'letting him get behind the bar'))
