A/N: My summaries suck, I’m so sorry. Please give it a chance anyway?
The atmosphere in the Boarding House was tense as the final details of the plan got settled. Everyone – as in the entire gang – had to make sure that they knew everything about their own part of the plan in order to make it work because tonight was the night of the battle.
The enemy of this battle was a group of werewolves who had decided to take camp on the mountains just outside of Mystic Falls. It would not usually be a problem but during the last full moon, the wolves had gone on rampage in the town.
Therefore, they had to fight them. And they had to do it before the next full moon, which was tomorrow.
Damon: Everyone knows what to do?
You nodded along with the others. Because you were human, you did not have a huge part in this plan – but you still wanted to fight.
Damon: Well in that case, let’s go kill some wolves.
All of you rose and went to the door, you and Matt being the last ones in line. However, just before you walked out, Matt grabbed your arm and turned you around.
Matt: You’re sure you want to do this? No one will mind if you choose not to go.
You sighed. This was a recurrent conversation of yours. You knew that Matt just wanted to be a good friend and protect you but you wanted to fight.
Y/N: Matt, I know you just want to take care of me but I can handle this. I’m a great fighter and I might even be better with a crossbow than you.
Matt: I know that. I just don’t want to see you get hurt. Or worse.
Y/N: Look, I’m in just as much danger going out there to fight than I would be tomorrow night if you don’t get rid of the werewolves.
Before Matt had the chance to speak again, Damon appeared in the doorway.
Damon: Not to interrupt or anything but I’d like to fight the wolves while it’s still dark so could you perhaps wait with the troubling conversations?
Y/N: We’re coming Damon, I’m pretty sure two seconds won’t make the difference.
When he left, you turned to Matt again.
Y/N: I appreciate your concern but it’s my decision. Please respect that.
You felt bad when you noticed his eyes changing. You hated hurting him – after all, he was your best friend. You had known each other since you were kids. And truthfully, he might be something more to you. You had noticed a slight difference in your stomach when you looked at him. But you still had yet to truly understand its meaning, wherefore you kept quiet.
Y/N: Just… let’s go and get rid of the wolves and then we’ll talk later, okay?
You tried giving him a small smile but the smile you got in return was even smaller. However, there was no time to think more about that – it was time for battle.
The fight was quite unequal. There were a lot more wolves than you had expected and more than you were. And of course all of the vampires had to be careful not to be bitten since Klaus had been difficult to reach the last few months.
But as time went on, it looked as if you would win. And you had even gotten a few good shots in yourself, feeling proud of your skills.
At least you were until a werewolf, whom you had not seen, came in from the side and threw you away – out from the mountain.
Your scream was mixed with that of another as you flew away and down the side of the mountain. But before you had gotten that far down, your hand was grabbed by another person – Matt.
As you were hanging down the side of the mountain, you held fast as tightly as possible.
Y/N: Please don’t let go Matt.
Despite his words, you could see that holding you was hard for him. He grinded his teeth but he still held onto your hand.
He tried pulling you up but you were too heavy. He screamed for help but everyone was too busy in their own fights.
It did not take long before you could feel his hand getting slippery. Your heart sank – you knew how this was going to end.
Matt: I won’t let go. I won’t let you die.
He tried pulling you up once again but it only made his grip less tight.
You closed your eyes and prepared yourself for what you knew was to come.
Just before you felt his grip disappear, you looked into his eyes and finally realized what your body had been trying to tell you all along.
You had just said the three words before Matt lost his grip, resulting in you falling down from the high mountain. You closed your eyes and screamed but then you felt another hand around your wrist.
You looked up and saw Damon who easily pulled you up and placed you on the safe ground of the mountain. When you looked around, you noticed that all of the werewolves were dead and that all of your friends were safe.
After catching your breath, you gratefully looked at Damon and hugged him.
Damon: No problem. Could not let you die after giving poor Matt such a huge confession.
He looked behind you where Matt was sitting, looking both terrified and relieved.
Damon and the rest of them walked away from you and Matt, giving you some privacy. After a way too long awkward silence, you decided to speak.
Y/N: Turns out that you were right. Probably would have been better if I’d just stayed at home where it was safe.
You could not read any of the signals that Matt was showing and had absolutely no idea what he was thinking. You were just about to lie and say that you had only meant ‘I love you’ as in friends but then you were caught by surprise when you felt his sweet lips on yours.
When he pulled away, he held his hands around your chin and placed his forehead on yours.
Matt: I don’t know what I would have done if Damon hadn’t come and saved you.
His eyes were filled with guilt. You placed your hand on his cheek.
Y/N: Shh, it’s okay. I’m okay.
Y/N: No, listen to me. I’m okay. And I’m okay because of you.
Matt: I love you too, you know. I just did not know it before I almost lost you.
Y/N: I know what you mean.
Well, at least something good happened that night. However, you would have wished that you and Matt had been able to understand and tell each other about your feelings before it was almost too late. But better late than never, right?
