Elijah had been on edge with Klaus since Celeste's death, but he had Marcel to focus on. He was relatively calm with Marcel, he'd missed helping his younger siblings, and Marcel was a wonderful student and he enjoyed spending time with him, and he'd found himself placing Marcel into the same place as his siblings lived in his mind.
He was someone he wanted to help, teach, and protect, and he didn't think that would ever change. So when Klaus was being ever mad about him teaching the boy the piano or Shakespeare. He really didn't understand, and he was already upset at Klaus being ever so drunk and angry around the child.
So when he then woke Kol who immediately filled their home with death and blood. Thankfully, Marcel didn't see it. But honestly, he pushed them both to keep the feeding out of their home. Because as happy as he was to see Kol again, he didn't stop watching them.
Then the massacres got worse. They were getting larger, more obvious, on a scale that would draw Mikael.
He wasn't waiting, or letting them excuse it, he instead packed bags and while his brothers where too busy he and Marcel left. He only left a letter for Rebekah.

He smiled as he and Marcel set up in a new home and Marcel seemed to get excited about being able to held him set up the home they chose. He perhaps gave the boy more then he needed, or what others would give their children.
Marcel didn't even argue when he reasoned that it would be easy to say they're Family, blood, he just asked if he meant son or nephew and Elijah told him he could choose which felt more comfortable.
Even if when they were home, alone, Marcel still just called him Elijah.
