“When I was a student at Cambridge I remember an anthropology professor holding up a picture of a bone with 28 incisions carved in it. ‘This is often considered to be man’s first attempt at a calendar’ she explained. She paused as we dutifully wrote this down. ‘My question to you is this – what man needs to mark 28 days? I would suggest to you that this is woman’s first attempt at a calendar.’ It was a moment that changed my life. In that second I stopped to question almost everything I had been taught about the past. How often had I overlooked women’s contributions?” ― Sandi Toksvig

id definitely seek out apprenticeship to a court wizard. id want to read a tome, id want to cast a spell with my hands or a staff, and do general sorcery. but id probably realize that my magic comes with a price, the price of maintaining balance; such a balance could not be struck in the walls of a castle or under the rule of royalty. so id defect to the wild and become scraggly like a tree, and id stink like dirt. id meld into the forest and protect the trees which are so dear to us in ways only a wizard could know. id give my woodland a frightening reputation as a place where one treads quite lightly among even twigs and stones on the forest paths. but id actually be quite nice to my visitors, were there any, because i want to cause love for this place, not fear. id probably grow quite ancient and become a tree myself from being simply so old… and then id have many friends like me, travelers who, rooting out of love, found themselves planted among friends. thats what id do i think
“We have a great view of the boats from my house on Poppy Hill… Actually, it’s my grandmother’s house. With my father gone and my mother studying in America, it’s my job to cook and do laundry for our boarders, and look after my little brother and sister. Ever since the wars, it seems the whole country is eager to get rid of the old and make way for the new. But some of us aren’t so ready to let go of the past. And sometimes the past is not ready to let go of us either.” - Umi Matsuzaki (From Up On Poppy Hill, 2011 dir. Goro Miyazaki)
