Getting It Out

life is full of firsts but I’ve found that those don’t matter. what about the seconds and the twelfths and the thirty-sevenths? I don’t want to remember the first time you held me I want to remember the twentieth time you did when you tried to hold all my pieces together. Before they fell with the rain because a life full of firsts is merely beginnings ended before they have a chance. I want to count every breath we take not the first and the last but all the ones in between.

Accepting death doesn’t mean you won’t be devastated when someone you love dies. It means you will be able to focus on your grief, unburdened by bigger existential questions like, “Why do people die?” and “Why is this happening to me?” Death isn’t happening to you. Death is happening to us all.”

And then I miss you more, jealous of the strangers who get to spend time with you when those people could be me. But I know that I must wait until you’re ready, and I’ll keep writing these letters with the knowledge that one day you will read them. I’ll wait for you, whispering “I miss you” into half-empty wine bottles, because you aren’t here yet to share it with me. But one day you will be, darling. One day you will be.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
