The type of ruler that Su-Won values - chapter 208 (SPOILERS)
It’s actually really ironic that Su-Won’s definition of the ideal successor candidate that should be educated on how to rule properly embodies traits in Yona.
“They (Sky civil official candidates) are excellent, but they all lack a trump card. I was wondering if there’s anyone out there with a broader vision, who’s not tied to a specific tribe… who can preserve a powerful life force and will.”
Yona is not tied to the Sky Tribe or any tribe.
Her entire motto is how she fights to live, and has a strong will to do so.
Yet when Zeno asks Su-Won, “what about the miss (Yona)? Isn’t the miss a candidate?”
Su-Won simply avoids eye contact and replies, “I have never thought so.”
Why? Get off your high horse, Su-Won.
Despite his description matching Yona, despite his gut feelings giving him the red light – “CANDIDATE MATCHED” – He’s clueless about who a good candidate is? LMFAOO no he’s clueless on purpose.
Su-Won clearly has no intention to place Yona on the throne. It’s frustrating but expected.
I’d like to delve deeper into why he’s so adamant to reject Yona.
“Broader vision” and “untied to any tribe” is the same description Hak uses to describe Su-Won.
And as we know, Su-Won and Yona are similar. They share the same drive and willpower.
Yet Su-Won does not know that + is refusing to acknowledge that.
1) All he’s focused on is how she uses religious/heavenly powers. Anything that impresses him
coincides with a bitter aftertaste of how what she does betrays him.
That grudge is still holding up because of past trauma – Yona as the reincarnation of Hiryuu is the last one he’ll ever consider because putting her up means putting him down.
I get he’s traumatized – but he’s too self-focused.
Yona was just willing to use practically ANYTHING that helped her to survive. Su-Won may never like that Yona used Gods, but he needs a broader perspective here.
Usually I like that Su-Won is often the only person that’s not a villain who directly opposes anything Yona does and broadens her perspective of how a nation works.
However, Su-Won is literally making me laugh this chapter. He’s losing time, he could drop dead any second before he accomplishes his goal, and he’s hesitating to choose a candidate just because of his bias?!
Yona was hella traumatized too, she went homeless and went orphaned and nearly died thanks to you – but if Yona was only focused on her pain after your betrayal, she’d have never known you became the king to protect the nation. If she was only focused on how inferior she felt to you, she would have never grown!
If according to your judgment, no one else has the drive, cooperate with this woman! Educate her on politics! No one’s saying you have to bow to the Gods or join Yona’s dragon harem or become a religious fanatic to do so! You’re still dying, after all, you have a right to be angry. But this is a nation’s fate at stake.
Yona has shown that she can work with you without having joined the Yu-Hon fanclub, so you should do the same!
2) Su-Won betrayed Yona. He is the betrayer and she is the betrayed. So by nature, the betrayed prioritized her personal and specific wants,
while the betrayer looked past his personal wants and stayed detached.
Su-Won wants to keep the status quo so that he can continue justifying his betrayal. If Yona shows just how much she’s suffered because of him and also grown because of him to the point that she too is able to put aside her personal biases, he’s going to feel both guilty and outclassed.
Even if he sees Yona as capable, he stubbornly refuses to recognize her as someone who can fit in the role he took up. Already his views on this aren’t objective and are colored by bias (and trauma).
This is so unlike Su-Won, for his emotions to cloud his judgement.
Yona should be acknowledged and trained. Someone needs to tell Su-Won that he and Yona are similar because it’s hilariously paradoxical that Su-Won wants someone just like Yona to rule, but not Yona.
