Dan stares at their hands, inches apart on the edge of the hospital bed. What the fuck is wrong with us?, he thinks, but keeps his hand where it is anyway. “I promise I won’t nearly die ever again!”

Or: As they both deal with Phil nearly dying, Dan realises that maybe keeping their relationship a secret is doing them more harm than good.
