Addendum: I know Jax is supposed to be an unlikeable asshole, but there are ways you can pull that off without the audience straight up hating the character.

A good example of this is Hector from Kaeloo. He's a horrible, awful, sadistic character who goes out of his way to ruin everything, but there's still a semblance of humanity in him. He still feels and has emotions, complexities that make him interesting as a character. There are times when you genuinely despise this character, but other times when he's relatable and you feel something. And he has trauma too!

It just boils down to really bad writing from someone who doesn't know literary nuance and character growth, and that's sad. It's sad because the show had potential to be something more and deliver a message.
