thinking about Mama Mutou (and specifically my version of her (that is basically an OC)) and oops I have. another fuckin WIP
(context for the following: Mama Mutou (given name Karuta) has just caught Jonouchi “stealing” from her after she took him and Yugi thrift shopping. what follows is a lil conversation snippet)
And there’s -
- more than there should be?
That can’t be right. Karuta counts the bills again, and again, and - there’s definitely more in her pocketbook than there was when she got back from work, about [¥] and some change. The bills look different, too - the ones Karuta had to start are more crisp, because she just got them from the bank. The new ones, the ones she thought Jonouchi was stealing, are worn and crinkled and have nicks along the edges.
Karuta looks at the bills, then up at Jonouchi. There’s a question there, just on the tip of her tongue, but it refuses to come out.
“It’s for the coat,” Jonouchi says in a small voice.
Karuta stares at him uncomprehendingly.
“For, y’know,” Jonouchi says, fidgeting, “the winter coat, and the other one, and the um, clothes.”
Karuta shakes her head. “I don’t…”
“I don’t like owing people,” Jonouchi says. “And that’s not all of it, but I-I’m good for it, I promise, you’ll get the rest when I get paid.”
Karuta blinks. Something molten and ugly churns in her, makes her mouth go sour. What the hell is wrong with this kid?
“Jonouchi,” she says, slowly, “you don’t owe me anything.”
It’s Jonouchi’s turn to stare at her.
“…Yes I do?”
“No, no you-“ Karuta stops, sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Those were gifts, you don’t have to pay me back.”
@junkverse was talking about Disability pride month by representing your favorite blorbos as disabled and i was like "oh im lowkey working on something like that now!"
the general idea was kind of a play on "atem gets his body back " is normally a magic perfectly formed body as a gift from the gods i wanted to play with "atem gets HIS body back" as in his body that has been embalmed and is missing internal organs and damage from his cause of death. Making atem over all frail and needing to learn how to ask for help and be emotionally vulnerable with other people rather than shouldering all of his problems and everyone else's.
ive more or less scrapped this version because the general plot was getting atem's conopic jars to put him back together and seto kiba throws a huge wrench in any kind of fetch quest like that he is highly motivated to just buy the jars from the British museum or whatever. not a super interesting core conflict.
i dont really love this as a one to one reading as a disability because atem eventually improves greatly, he regains quite a bit of his body function. i dont really like the idea of a disabled person "getting fixed" and getting their happily ever after as a more or less able bodied person.( i had him using a cane and missing an eye. king tut had a pre- mortum deep cut just under one eye so if that is not the thing that killed him he probably went blind, and seemingly walked with a cane all his life) so this idea has been sanded down a lot in the version ive been toying around with now a days.
a lot of the things happening in this version have been tossed out, gathering the conopic jars meant putting the organs back in and that idea only got grosser the more hydrated atem gets. love the idea of " he is elbow deep in my chest cavity putting my heart in place because it is his to hold" is cute in concept but the reality is " im amputating my arm because it is coated in 5000 year old spiderwebs, stomach bile, and embalming oils and im never getting it clean again." even if i just scapped the jars and he got better through emotional growth, yugi still has a /dead body/ in his dorm room just chilling. a dead body that can talk but its still leaving little bits ok skin and mummy wrappings around. Eww . in a version i never put pen to paper too i thought that atem would willingly * not *want to improve and stay the most mummy like because yugi was carrying his head around in his bag to talk to him while running around the city, rather than shambling around whole with him. I dont like this as an allegory for refusal for "treatment " and its too yucky for me and yugi would go to jail
the version i have now atem is not jerky but a regular dude but has a festering wound where his embalming scar is, im not sure how literal or emotional i want the "wound" to be #MyFatalWound
I wanted the story to be about adapting to who you are now and being able to accept yourself and accept help from others. it hurts that you cannot be the person people saw you as or who you saw yourself as but you can find ways to accommodate you limits as you exist right now.
first off: I love this to pieces. (finally, an Atem Gets His Own Body AU I can get behind!) I love that this is like… he does technically get less disabled the more. hydrated he gets, but is never fully able-bodied.
I also like the idea of the embalming wound not healing right or at all — that in of itself being a disability and liability that he has to watch over and take care of.
I don’t have any immediate ideas or critiques atm, but rest assured I will be chewing on this for awhile, heehee
wrist is Still Angry, so: a dragon I made awhile back for coloring practice (and an attempt at dragonifying a certain shonen protagonist. three guesses who). v proud of the lines/posing, color was fighting me tho. the attempt at the right was the only one that looked okay.
also, fun fact: made a rough maquette for this one to figure out how to draw the neck spines right
