UNDERSTAND | CHAPTER 10: JAYYN NATION RISE

“guys that was amazing! great job,” your manager complimented as you and the girls stepped off the stage. panting and gasping for air, you take the water bottle and towel that was handed to you and made your way back to the dressing rooms.
you guys had just performed for your comeback showcase and the nerves you had prior to the performance instantly vanished. the crowd and reporters seemed to love it and you hope that the rest of promotions go this smoothly.
while walking and still a bit winded, you almost bump into a cameraman. with everything going on you almost forgot that the WGM crew was there to get some content for the show. you weren't sure why they needed to record you while jay wasn't here but they said something about wanting to film you two separately for the next episode. this confused you but you paid no mind to it. you were far too busy preparing for your comeback to even think about jay and the show.
you won’t lie, he definitely crossed your mind from time to time, especially today since he hadn’t texted since last night. he had mentioned he’d be busy and gave you a little good luck speech but that was the last you heard from him. honestly, you were sort of disappointed that you didn’t find a good morning text from him. it was silly to say that your mood for the day solely depended on whether if he texted you or not but with how great things have been going between you two, you simply couldn’t help it.
your friendship with jay is one that you cherish deeply since you didn’t have any friends outside of your members. it was hard to keep up with the people you used to train with back in the day and you didn’t have time to meet anyone else. being able to share the little things about your day along with your deep thoughts and aspirations to someone who wasn’t the girls was refreshing.
now back in the dressing room, you focus your attention on the tv screen displaying your guys’ performance. right off the bat you noticed a mistake you made with the choreography. it may not have been noticeable to others but it was so easy to spot for you. how could you let that happen? it was very first performance of this song and you managed to fuck up already.
you take a mental note to go straight to the practice room once you get back to the company. “hey yn can you go get the door?” too consumed with your thoughts, your head shoots up at jiwoos request. “i’ll go get it!” jeemin responds and starts walking towards it but jiwoo is quick to stop her.
“no dont!” everyone pauses to give a confused look at the leader. “yn’s closer to it anyways.” you roll your eyes and listen to her, not having the energy to argue. you’re not sure who or what you’re expecting to be behind the door, but you definitely weren’t expecting jay to be standing in front of you with a bouquet of flowers, a bright smile adorning his face.
what the hell was he doing here? did he see you perform? oh my god, did he see you mess up? the stress of the situation is building up in your mind and you can barely register that jay greeted you and has made his way into the room. you quickly shut the door and collect yourself, hoping the cameras didn’t catch your bewildered expression on your face.
“jay! what are you doing here?”
“to support your comeback of course!”
“oh. so you saw us perform?” you tried your best to not sound disappointed, you really did. he immediately notices you’re not as enthusiastic as you normally are and he physically has to fight himself to not pull you into a hug, wanting to take whatever you’re feeling away. pause. what is he thinking? there’s no way he can do that with everyone around, especially with all of the crew and staff. he settles on a soft pat on your head and keeps his distance.
“why do you sound like that? you did amazing, silly.” he says while ruffling your hair lightly without messing up your perfect curls and hands you the flowers. you can’t help but relax at his words and the corner of your lips lifts into a grin. for a moment it’s like time stops and jay and you are the only people in the room.
you haven’t properly seen him since the last filming and that honestly felt like a lifetime ago (it’s been two weeks.) he’s still as handsome as ever, clad in a simple black t-shirt and black pants. you think the glasses he’s wearing make him extra attractive, making your mind spin. it’s completely normal to think your friends are good looking, right?
the sound of someone’s throat clearing interrupts your thoughts and you look to see jiwoo looking at you two “yn? are you going to introduce us?”
“right! jay this is jiwoo, chanelle, jihyun, and jeemin. guys this is jay.” the girls bow to their senior and exchange a few greetings. you notice how jiwoo and jay exchange a knowing look but you decide you’ll keep it to yourself for now.
“it’s nice to meet you guys! the performance was amazing by the way. i brought some cupcakes i made and some drinks, hope everyone is hungry.” jay moves to unpack the things he came with, passing everyone including the staff the cupcakes and your members the drinks. “i didn’t know what everyone liked so i just got you guys yn’s favorite.” when he finally gets to you, you’re stunned for what seems like the millionth time today.
the cupcakes were red velvet with cream cheese frosting, little moon and star sprinkles littered on top. they definitely looked homemade, the frosting all over the place and all of the cakes being uneven sizes. you could care less about the presentation though, it’s more so the attention to detail and the effort behind this simple gesture that makes your heart swell.
everyone moves to sit down and jay grabs a nearby blanket to drape over your lap and motions for you to take a seat. he continues his actions and unwraps a cupcake for you and starts talking to jiwoo and chanelle, as if taking care of you was second nature to him. the two youngest catch a glimpse of this and start giggling to themselves while jay doesn't seem to be fazed.
taking a look at the staff watching the scene unfold before them, you want to roll your eyes at their giddiness. they’re definitely going to have a field day with this episode you think to yourself. continuing on as if nothing happened, you decide to join the conversations around you. you want to savor this moment, all of your favorite people in one room enjoying each other’s company, it’s all you could ask for really.
after some time passes, it’s finally time for jay to make his exit and jihyun is the first to speak up, “thanks for the snacks jay! don’t be a stranger, we definitely wouldn’t be opposed to more surprise visits in the future-” “with some more food of course!’ jeemin adds in. all jay could do was give a light chuckle and promise he’ll bring all the food they want. what were you going to do with those two?
the girls bid him a goodbye and you walk jay out of the building, away from the cameras. a comfortable silence engulfs you two and once you’re outside, you make sure no one is around. it’s late at night at this point so there isn’t any wandering eyes of the public so you finally decide to speak up.
“thanks for coming today jay. it really means a lot with everything you did.”
“it’s no problem really. i’m not much of a baker as i am a cook though so sorry if the cupcakes weren’t good.”
“no they were great! but if you’re as great of a chef as you say you are, you mind cooking for me sometime?”
he laughs, “of course. it’ll be better than what gordon ramsey has ever made.” you giggle at his statement and look away from him. the night breeze swirls around you and you take a deep breath, the stress and adrenaline from today finally catching up to you.
jay sees that you’re tense, barely making eye contact with him. he finally indulges in himself and reaches to give you the hug he wanted to earlier. his strong arms wrap around your shoulders and you can physically feel your worries leaving your body. you’re too tired to question this action and lean into him reciprocating the hug. the two of you stand there, arms entangled with one another finding comfort in the sounds of the city and in each other’s presence. it’s scary how calm jay can make you feel with a simple hug but you decide not to overthink and just enjoy this moment with him.
