i hate this. im going to think about this everytime i do this now. its like that fucking white people running across the road post im so pissed.

i’ve been thinking about this post every time i do this to other white people, and while most white people might say that they do it because they want to seem friendly, what i’ve actually deduced from this look is that it’s white people language for “i am not a threat”. we, as white people, tend to assess every little thing as a threat, and somewhere in our subconscious, we know that others also feel that way. so, we shoot them a quick “i am not a threat” look, and continue on with our day without any further social obligation.

On the 65th anniversary of its publication, I wrote about why I own 20 copies of Catcher:

When I first read it, at 20, Catcher was a revelation, but not for the reason you might assume: I fell in love with the language. It is still one of the most exquisitely rendered character studies I’ve ever read. The originality and power and consistency of the voice, so brilliantly controlled, so precisely deployed, not a word out of place. I got goosebumps reading it. It lit a fire in my emerging writer brain: Oh… that’s how you do that.
