Ryan Howard’s Last Days
As the season winds down and Ryan Howard’s days as a Phillies player are numbered, Howard has spoken out about his platooning with Tommy Joseph. I’ve been critical of Howard in the past but for the most part of this season, reports are he’s been nothing but a professional.Â
The critical days:
1 For his first few years the majority of his home runs were to left center. This made him one of the most feared hitters in the MLB and rightfully so. Seems after his home run derby appearance for a long stretch, Howard was so pull happy that opposing pitchers lost the fear they once had. Howard would get himself out more times than not by not identifying pitches and trying to pull  the outside pitch. Fans could call out the pitch and location before the catcher even flashed a sign. Nothing new with this info right?
2) defense, who gives a shit when a guy has 35-50 home run potential
Howard has spoken up about Mackanin’s plan to play him less. Howard has been fairly hot the last few weeks and deserves to get more playing time based off of that alone. This team has no chance of a Wild Card birth so why not give the man named The Big Piece, more playing time so the 12-18,000 fans at Citizen’s Bank Park have a shot to say goodbye? Ruiz was dealt while the Phillies were away. Fans didn't get a chance to say goodbye to Hamels, Utley or Rollins either. For the man who has publicly received the most criticism over the years, I think he and the fans deserve the chance to make things right.Â
Joseph received many more opportunities than Ruf did and rightfully so. Still, Joseph hasn't lit the world on fire this year and has looked lost offensively as well as defensively at times. I’m all for the younger guys moving older players out but not this instance.Â
This is a time Phillies fans should embrace Howard not for  the production of the last few years but for the accomplishments throughout his career. Why wait to give him a standing ovation if he comes back as another player? Why wait until he comes back to go alongside unworthy players on the Wall of Fame?Â
Appreciate what we had and have now Phillies fans, Ryan Howard deserves it.
