I need y'all to understand what's going on in Major League Baseball right now because 2 players are basically having fandom drama and I am here for it.
The Reds & Giants were warming up on the field before the game yesterday (May 27). Tommy Pham (Reds outfielder) walked up to Joc Pederson (Giants outfielder) and said something like, "You remember from last year?" Pederson said, "Fantasy football?" Pham said yes and then slapped him. Open-handed slap, left side of face.
Here's where it gets fun. This is Joc Pederson talking about what led to the slap.
And Pham was very offended.
And this is the follow-up from Pederson.
(I have no idea how embed Twitter videos. You should follow the links to the videos. This is the best thing to happen all month, and it's absolutely a treat after the terrible week everyone's had.)
Here's the best part. This wasn't offseason fantasy football for the NFL draft or anything. This was during the football season. Someone tracked down when the injuries happened that Pederson was talking about and it was November. They had no contact from November until now, when Pham walked up to Pederson before the game and slapped him. Six. Months. I've severed multi-decade toxic friendships and the thing I did when I saw those people (We lived in the same town.) was ignore them. Pham held onto a fantasy football grudge (I cannot stress enough how ridiculous the original grudge is.) and slapped Pederson for a stupid gif 6 months later.
Pham is suspended 3 games, ostensibly for slapping another player, although I really think someone at MLB's disciplinary office had to scramble when asked, "What's the punishment for a player slapping another player after an argument in a fantasy football league resulted in an insulting gif via text?"
Lastly, I absolutely hate, "I'm sorry if I offended anyone," apologies. Everyone hates them. They're ridiculous. They don't mean anything. The person isn't actually apologizing for anything; they're saying it's the other person's fault for being insulted. Having said all that, perfectly done on Pederson's part. No notes.
