Barry nods, smiling fondly. It was always a treat to see Davenport expressing himself, and he always did love an exchange of stories when he didnโt need to be that calculating captain. Even though what happened to him weakened that sharp mind so much that a Command could take to it like a knife through butterโฆ Hang on, when has Barry ever cast an enchantment on Davenport?
โLup loves you,โ he says, then sighs. โAnd Iโ I dunno about the others, theyโre gonna need time to sort their thoughts out. Me, I had months to do nothing but think.โ
โI wonโt pretend that whole situation didnโt suck. I mean, I could understand why, or at least make my guesses, but I couldnโt reach you, andโฆ Man, Luce. I was almost less afraid of you succeeding than of you just being someone I wouldnโt recognize. We all know what the Light does, and there you were pushing your family out of the way to get at the damned thing.โ
He looks back at her. โSo itโsโ itโs good to still know you. And know I canย trust you.โ
The rest of her questions are bigger, harder to give a real answer to. And yet, at the same time, he feels certain of his answer.
โWe built bonds of family out of saving whole worlds, and nowโฆ I guess we donโt got any more worlds to save. So weโre probably not gonna get back to exactly what we had, but beinโ honest, I think thatโs mostly a good thing, given the circumstances. We can build something new instead.โ
Itโs going to feel strange, though. He knows he hasnโt yet come to terms with it, from the way the cogs of his brain keep instinctively turning. After so long, Barry doesnโt know what heโs going to do when he no longer has to be in motion.
โThatโs, uh, thatโs a good question. Guess Iโll have to find some new project to keep busy, after I nap for about a year.
โActually, you know what? When we get outta hereโ letโs take a goddamn vacation.โ
She listens in silence at first-- sheโd said so many times that she was ready to accept whatever judgement Barry, or any of the others might give her for what she had done. (And if she had it to do over, she knows she would probably make the same choices, as much as she knows he doesnโt want to hear it). She wouldnโt change it, but that doesnโt mean that she liked doing it.
โThatโs... what I was worried about too,โ she nods slowly. โI felt myself becoming different over all that time. I know Iโm different now than I used to be.โ She rests her head on her hands, sighing. โWe all grow up and change, but... we both changed so quickly, we had to. There were times I was worried the light was getting at me and I couldnโt see it. Times when I was all alone and thought I was losing my mind, and... times I almost broke down and called you.โย Sheโs never admitted that before. The times sheโd come so dangerously close to going to see him, to find a way to call him, to send him a letter...
โI didnโt know what you would do if I came to see you. How far youโd have gone to stop me. And I couldnโt let you get in the way when I was so close, so I never reached out. Iโm sorry.โ Finally looking up to meet his eyes-- man this is a weird situation, but itโs nice to air all of this out. Despite... maybe being dead (or undead) in a mysterious train car.
โBuild something new... I... I like that, Barry. Iโd like that a lot. For a long time I worried about losing all that we had as a family, but I would be happy with something new. As long as weโre together, right? The loveโs still there. Thatโs what counts.โ A small smile graces her features, and she leans back against the train seat.
โAnd yโknow what? I would love a vacation. Closest I ever came in those years was a weekend getaway with Merle of all people. You think after all this we even remember how to relax?โ
@aspertialeaderโ
โCheren? Are you in?โ Lucretia knocks on the doorframe, leaning in the doorway. Almost immediately another Lucretia walks up behind her, perhaps a little older-looking (which is strange-- donโt most of the doubles look younger?)
โI wanted to let you know that Iโve heard from the higher-ups-- if students ask, weโre to excuse them for the duration of the...โ she gestures to the other Lucretia, who shrugs.
โCrisis? No one really knows whatโs going on, so we canโt expect the students to work right now. I wasnโt sure if you had gotten the message yet.โ
Aaaaand hereโs a starter call for Lucretia for part 1 of the event! Probably on the shorter side, and leaving it uncapped !

Aaaaand hereโs a starter call for Lucretia for part 1 of the event! Probably on the shorter side, and leaving it uncapped !
Subsistence Info - Lucretia
During Subversion:
Lucretia was a teacher at the university-- already having several books published by the time she was 30.
She lived with her adopted brother, Barry, and her niece, Kay.
Knew very little about Barryโs work with the mob, but worried about him coming home exhausted and beat-up... she tried to support him as best she could despite not knowing what was going on.
Ambidextrous and could write in two books at once if she was really in the zone!
In-Between:
The events with her โdoubleโ left her more sad than upset-- she worried so much about the person her double had become. How sheโd betrayed her family. Was she really capable of something like that...?
She worried about that, but she still tried to stay close to Barry.
Her work ended up taking up a lot of her time, though...
Became pretty fiercely independent in the years in between, Had a few pretty rough years that she tried to tough out on her own.
Adopted a son, Angus! Having him in her life made her realize that she needed to spend less time working, and more time with her family.
Present Day:
Lucretia was put in charge of her department at the University-- some people even call her โMadam Directorโ.
No dogs allowed in her office.
Trying to reconnect more with her family since Barryโs less involved with the mob, and sheโs finally learning to take a break from work.
Does her best to look after Kay while sheโs going to college.
Realizes every time she looks in the mirror that she looks a bit more like her โother selfโ.
...sheโs really trying not to worry about that.
redlichbluelichโ:
โNo kiddinโ.โ Whatever this is, it has the rare property in a centuryโs travels of being new. Maybe itโs something the Stars conjured up, though if so, theyโre not doing a good job making clear what side theyโre on in this conflict. Not that they ever have.
Barry laughs. โYeah, uhh, three heads enable thrice as much bullshit as one.โ And Magnus manages to โnearly dieโ with feats of heroism every other day, it seems like, but thatโs a much scarier prospect when death is permanent. โI bet you Capโnport had just as fun a time learning that one.โ
โYeah, I sure donโt envy that position,โ he says, then smiles wryly. โDunno how much I couldโve told โem, though. With so much off-limits, beinโ cryptic was pretty much all there was. Just had to hope somethinโ got through.โ
They were almost working together in that sense, Lucretia and Barryโ feeding the same narrative. Even if it wasnโt his intention to be the villain, he mustโve easy to slot into that role.
โI mean, I was plenty a mess myself by then. Uh, longest time Iโve ever spent as a lich, actually, by a long shot. But I couldnโt risk not knowing what was goinโ on at the wrong timeโ It just all felt so urgent for that whole last year-and-change, Iโm sure you felt that too. Youโ hahโ you were scared theyโd trust me more, and I was scared they wouldnโt.โ
He frowns, his brain finally catching up with his words. โโฆAnd I dunno how I remember all that now. Somethinโ about the void, maybe? But, uh. Man, am I glad thereโs not sides anymore. That was a fuckinโ fiasco decade. We work better as a team, if you ask me.โ
The bit about Davenport stings-- at least the last time she had seen him, both here and back home, heโd been his usual self, but... every day she feels bad about what she did to him that whole time.
โI hope when we see Davenport next, weโll be able to tell him a lot of stories from that time.โ Something flashes in her memory as well, and she frowns, as if deep in thought. The captain smiling-- and not in the forced way he had at the bureau. When had she seen him this happy recently...? She shakes it off again, she must be imagining things.โThe truth is, Barry, I made my choices... I suppose we both did. And if Taako and Davenport are never able to forgive me, I can respect that,โ she leans back against the seat, sighing. โIโd understand if none of you were able to forgive me. After all, I fucked up your memory as well, and made you out to be a villain. And Lup...โ That one weighs heavy on her as well. Theyโd all wanted the same things, yet she took everything into her own hands.
โAre we really able to put the past behind us so easily? It... it was a shit decade,โ she laughs softly, eyes cast down. โBut all that time we spent at odds, after everything Iโve done to tear this family apart...โ Her voice cracks, and sheโs abandoned all attempts to look composed. Sheโs been more โLucretiaโ than โMadam Directorโ for months now, but itโs more apparent now than ever.
โI guess what Iโm asking, is... if we really did defeat the hunger, if we return to either home or Spirale after this...โ A big if, given the current state of things. โDo you think weโll ever be able to rebuild all that we lost? As a family?โ Part of her wonders if she even deserves to want something like that.
โAnd, I suppose... what will you do now? Iโve never thought too much about what would happen next. Have you?โ
redlichbluelichโ:
Barry hums in thought, brow furrowed, and follows her to the window. โWell, no hole this time. One point in our favor.โ
He squints out at the distant circles, but he canโt quite make them out, either. They seem familiar somehow, but he canโt quite place itโฆ
โWait, really? Bureau business?โ he responds, amused. โDonโt tell me someone sent the Stone by train, orโ No, I guess it mustโve been the, uh, Davโs. Oculus?โ Heโs not sure how heโs sure what relic it was. His intel keeping up with them stopped when he came to the city, which was before she hired the boys. Sheโฆ must have mentioned the train to him in the city, at some point? โI gotta get that story outta you sometime.โ
โMe, Iโm fine. I mean, I think right now Iโm a zombie, which is fun. Here, look.โ Seeming considerably more excited about inhabiting his own corpse than anyone ought to be, Barry holds out his arm so she can see the deathly pale discoloration.
He pulls back the curtain to squint out at the blank void again. โYeah, weird aesthetic for any death god I know. And I donโt suppose those liโl guys out there are souls.โ
He looks back at Lucretia. โSo weโve got a train that should be wrecked or in another dimension who knows where, and my body which the Stars usually sweep up who knows where, so weโreโฆ who knows where?โ
โOh, wow. Gross.โ Lucretia raises an eyebrow, but inspects the offered arm, putting her hand on his. Yeesh-- cold. โThatโs new. I had a lot of ideas what might happen after the spell was cast, but this... uh, this wasnโt one of them.โ She sits down, placing her staff beside her with a deep sigh. Thereโs nothing immediate they can do, right? It doesnโt seem like theyโre in any imminent danger. For once, maybe itโs OK to take a breather as they figure out their next move...itโs not like theyโre just going to be stuck here, right...?
โYes, it was the Oculus,โ she nods. How did he know that...? She must have told him at some point. But they really had made a point of not talking much about things like that, it all felt so awkward. She didnโt like being reminded of the time they spent apart, but... they have the time now, donโt they? If she canโt talk about difficult things with her brother in the dining car of a wrecked train traveling through an unknowable void, when can she talk to him?
โItโs a hell of a story, Barry. All they had to do was get a box off a train. I sent them down there thinking that it was the least possible danger i could put them in, and they lost the entire train after jumping off of it. Magnus nearly died.โ
โI was worried sick,โ she laughs. โEvery time I sent them down there, I was anxious until they came home.โ She leans her head on her hand, glancing at him. โYou were there for most of their outings, you know. It was equal parts reassuring and terrifying. I knew youโd try to protect them, but... I was also scared of what you might tell them.โ
...
โIโm glad we donโt have to do that anymore. I missed you.โ
redlichbluelichโ:
โI love you so much,โ he says, and heโs proud. He takes her hand, watching her cast the most powerful spell that anyone in their concept of reality would ever, could ever cast. The Hunger starts breaking out of his hold, rushing to close the distance between them, but thenโ sheโs got them. Sheโs got everything.
The light overtakes his senses, and thenโฆ
Barry feels strangely stiff. Heโs got the ghost of a headache, like knowledge creeping towards his mind: a familiar sensation. His eyes open to blurry vision, and he sees his hands resting on the table in front of him. Theyโre sort of blue at the fingertips, but the most notable feature is his skin. He reflexively pats himself down, finding all the usual clothesโ bloodstained in a few places, most notably where the final blow was dealt.
He pulls his shirt up to check, but the injury is crusted, not bleeding. Pressing a thumb to his wrist confirms that no blood is being pumped through his body at all. This isnโt a fresh, living body from Spiraleโs resurrection system, itโsโฆ the exact one that died half an hour ago, and by now shouldโve faded out of existence.
But itโs here, instead. In thisโฆ train? It looks the right amount of modern to be Faerรปnian, but heโs got no idea which it is. Heโs in a dining car, across from Lucretia, and heโs relieved to see that at least one of them is breathing.
โLucretia? Hey! You alright?โ He reaches out to pat one of her hands. โIs thisโ Did this happen last time? It looked like you got the shield up, but I donโt, uh, Iโll be honest, I donโt know where this is.โ
When Lucretia wakes up, sheโs got a strange sense of deja vu. Memories creeping into her head that... feel less normal. But she canโt focus on them, not yet, instead sitting up and glancing around as her vision comes into focus.
โI donโt know,โ her voice is still dazed as she looks around, running a hand through her hair. โLast time I cast the spell, I woke up by the pit in Spirale, right...before I ran into you.โ Thatโs right, isnโt it? Suddenly sheโs not so sure. Itโs all a bit hazy, like this space is somewhere sheโs been before, but she canโt quite remember it.
โThis train looks like the one I sent the boys on. The one...โ she pinches the bridge of her nose, unable to suppress a sigh. โThe one they destroyed. Or sent through a portal or... something. I donโt know. Blame Taako.โ
She shakily rises to her feet, rubbing her temples-- other than a slight headache, it looks like sheโs perfectly fine. She goes to the window, pulling aside a curtain to look out at... well. Nothing. Just pure white space as far as the eye can see, along with circles in the distance she canโt quite make out.
โWell, that doesnโt look great.โ She glances at him, then back out the window, electing to just let the curtain fall back once theyโve both seen the view outside. โAre you all right? Iโm assuming weโre not dead. Well, no more than usual in your case I suppose, but, uh... in the โthat white space is the astral plane and the raven queen is out to finally get our assesโ sense.โ

โYeah, me too.โ Heโd been preparing to take everything on entirely alone, back on Faerรปn. A decade in hiding, scheming to perpetrate their two flawed plans, gambits to slow the worldโs destruction by letting it destroy itself instead.
He had only just begun to realize that he was going to need the crewโs help, and from the sound of things, so had Lucretia. But of all their teammates, to have each otherโ Out of so many things wrong here, it feels like somethingโs finally right.
The horde is getting thicker, more desperate, threatening to overrun them. The sky is covered with black to the horizon and beyond, but Barry canโt even see it anymore, even throwing nonstop attacks at them all. Heโs has moved down closer to Lucretia, sacrificing his wider visibility to have a smaller area to protect.
โGood. Good, you got this.โ At her warning, he turns his magic to his pseudo-Time Stop spell, freezing every being around them in a red glow. His own form distorts a little with the effort, as though he were being viewed from underwater. Itโs much easier to hold this spell on a roomful of people having benign conversation than it is on countless, violent aggressors.
โLuce,โ he says. โOut of anyone in thisโ this whole multiverse, and whateverโs beyond it, you are the one Iโd want casting this. You can do this, all right? Make โem proud.โ
โIโve got this,โ she repeats. โWeโve got this. Thank you, Barry. I love you.โ The fact that their two separate paths led them both here, to this moment-- there was a long time where Barry was the last person she would have seen herself saving the world with. But right now, she feels like sheโs exactly where she needs to be. As heโd said, thereโs no one in existence sheโd rather be standing here with.
โWeโre going to make them all proud,โ when she looks at him, sheโs smiling-- fierce determination in her eyes. โWhen we see everyone again, weโre going to have a hell of a story to tell.โ
The whole world seems to slow at once as she readies herself, preparing to cast the spell that-- in her experience, once brought her here. The enemies are frozen in place thanks to Barryโs magic, but he doesnโt need to hold them for long as her expression shifts-- her head cranes back and her gaze shifts to the storm above, the staff glowing with a bright white light.
She wants to tell him to leave, to get to safety, as she had told the other boys back then, but... in this moment? Sheโs fairly certain heโd choose exactly the same as Taako, Merle, and Magnus. So in those final moments, she simply reaches for his hand, closing her eyes tight as a beam of light shoots into the sky.
And then?
Light.
redlichbluelichโ:
โYou got it!โ He flies up above her to get an eye on all sides, blasting most things that come into the radius and letting the rest be stopped by his barrier. Anything that comes from above is similarly dismantled.
Thereโs a lot to keep track of, and the more careful, precise shots are quickly exchanged for loose, wide shots with coverage. Itโs been a while since heโs gotten into a real fight at full power, and despite the gravity of the situation, it feels good to stretch his legs (so to speak).
Lucretiaโs hesitance isโฆ less good, though understandable.
โYes. Thisโ This is it.โ Or at least, this is the very best optionโ this time a planned option, rather than a last resort. If it doesnโt work, then nothing will. โI know we couldnโt see the first one come to fruition. But Iโve been thinkinโ, right, Lup nโ I first got here when we were between planes, coming to Faerรปn. And you and Taako touched down when you were miles up from there. So if thereโs any common thread, itโs doinโ reality-messing magic in the god damn Abeir-Toril system.โ
He speaks slowly, deliberately, making use of the little focus he has to spare.
โWeโre not on Faerรปn. And weโve done the math. This planโ This isnโt just a solution, itโs the solution. This is whatโs gonna do it. All you gotta do is cast the spell.โ
His explanation makes sense-- and sheโs grateful. Grateful that this time, there was no planning in secret, no explosive confrontation. Sheโs thankful that they can face this as a team... even if the whole family isnโt here.
She wishes they were all here.
โThank you, Barry. I know this can work, itโs just...โ She holds steady, hands clenched tight around the staff. โIโm glad weโre facing this together. Thank you for trusting me.โ
It's worlds different from the last time she cast this spell-- something she doesnโt even want to think about right now. Taako pointing the umbrastaff at her, the betrayal in Davenportโs eyes...
But Barryโs right. Theyโve done the math, run the equation hundreds of times. It should have worked last time, it has to work this time. All she has to do is cast the spell. Theyโve all made such wonderful friends here, made a home here, just as they had on Faerun. They have to protect the people they love, right? Itโs what theyโve been fighting for all this time.
โIโm almost ready-- just hold them off for a moment longer!โ
-to go and get your hands dirty?
@journalskeeperโโ
Barry crouches over his body, where it lies in the aftermath of too-close combat, dead alongside his fallen killer. He tugs the ribbon from his wrist and ties it across his shadowy left hand, then scoops the Light up. With his right hand, he grabs his dagger, and then heโs off.
He clutches the Light of Creation as he runs, chest aching as though it contained lungs. Yet at the same time, heโs sure he could run forever, holding the tool that built the world. He wants to use it so bad, to tear a hole in the fabric of this city and grab his loved ones and go home.
His form is composed entirely of his soul and magic, now. Itโs harder to resist the Light without that barrier of flesh and bone between it and his thoughts. He really needs to reach the Isles.
The Hunger makes it difficult, as he zags between columns slamming down and slashes through monsters. It keeps increasing its forces, but he was already closeโ and once he reaches the path up towards the sky, he knows heโs going to make it. He throws the next wave back with a blast of lightning, his capacity for spells returning slowly.
The second he feels light enough to fly, he jumps. Lucretiaโs easy to find, even without a spell to divine her location. The hordes of dark things, whether winged or shooting at him from the ground, increases more and more as he approaches. Thank the gods sheโs the one with the Abjuration specialty, huh?
โLucretia!โ He shouts when he comes in range, and echoes his voice with a Message to be sure heโs heard. โAre you ready?โ
โTrade you.โ He dives forward to thrust the Light into her hands before he can think of one more way to try and rebuild the Starblaster out of scraps. Then in exchange, he throws a ring of lightning around them like a fence, so she can focus on the new spell instead of self defense.
โIโll keep โem back so you can get a clear shot. Tell me what else you need!โ
Itโs been agony waiting for Barry to arrive with the light.
Lucretia had headed straight for the Isles, getting set up in the best possible place with the clearest shot, and alternating between fighting off thralls of shadows and preparing to cast the spell sheโs been working on for years, and going over bit by bit with Barry these past few months. The spell that could save the world.
She simply nods at his question, and takes a sharp breath as she takes the light into her hands. All at once, itโs like all of her worst fears are tangible as she feels its warmth again-- like a reminder that this is real, and everythingโs riding on the two of them.
โJust keep them back as best you can! Once the shield starts to take shape, itโll start to repel them too! But for now, I canโt focus on fighting and channeling at the same time!โ Her hands tremble as she begins the process of channeling the light into the staff, beads of sweat forming on her brow-- sheโs done this once before, after all. And the last time, theyโd ended up here... how can she be confident it wonโt be worse this time?
No. Barry believes in her, Lup believed in her. Theyโve spent so long preparing for this, sacrificed so much... she has to do this. Theyโve come too far for it all to end here.
โBarry!โ She calls out, hands like a vice grip on the white oak staff. โYouโre sure about this, arenโt you? I... I know we had our differences about the plan before, but this time...โ
โI just need to know that weโre on the same page. Weโre doing the right thing, arenโt we? The two of us can end this here and now, right?โ
โWell, shit.โ
let me assign you a celestial body

โAre we really so surprised? She could have learned that from anyone around here.โ
troubleisafriendโ:
Honestly, Jester couldโve gone through the whole festival if she had the time- everything around here was so pretty or cozy!ย Whatever kind of evening she wanted, she could have it- but once she got the idea to invite Lucretia along, this was the one attraction she knew they had to stop by.ย Art was what had drawn the two of them together, after all!ย All the way back to when they were trapped on those weird islandsโฆ
โIโve done sculpting back home too!โย At least she assumed the woman meant back home, since she said it was a long time ago.ย ย โMy friends and I made a bunch of tiny figures for a celebration we were throwing for my god.โย Those had all been relatively in comparison to something like this, but no less enjoyable to create.ย She keeps her attention off her own work to watch her friend get started, smiling a bit bigger before getting back to it.
โOh, this tall figure here-โ she gestures to the humanoid shape sheโd worked the most on-ย โthis is my mom!ย And down here by her feet is going to be a little me, dancing with her like we used to when I was that age!โ
Lucretia turns the ice block in front of her while she listens to Jester, thinking about the best way to go about what she was planning.
โCelebrations are always fun,โ she nods. โI canโt tell you how many we had for Pan over the years,โ itโs said with a light chuckle. Merle had always been relaxed in his faith, but it was nice to have festivals and holidays to look forward to.
โI like what youโve done with the pose so far,โ She makes sure to stay out of chainsaw range as she observes Jesterโs work. โItโs very dynamic... you can really see the movement in the dance,โ she smiles.
โIt must be a very fond memory to come across so clearly in your work.โ
