BREAKING NEWS: FAILED CHEMICAL EXPERIMENT LED TO ZOMBIE OUTBREAK.
you were too calm given the situation. people screaming all over the town, glass shattering from the zombies breaking into people’s houses, and worst of all, blood splattering onto the windows.
while you were sitting on your couch, trying to listen out for the news, when it got cut off at the most crucial part — the location of the safe zones.
“we urge all civilians to proceed to the following safe zones. in-”
silence. the television showing nothing but blackness.
and that’s when you started to panic.
“noona, what do we do now? we have no where to go!” seokmin panicked, shaking your shoulders.
“noona, i’ve packed all our belongings with jihoon hyung, we should get going.” chan, the youngest said. jihoon walked out with 4 large bags, labelled with different colours.
the lee family was always chaotic. but today? it was a different version of chaos.
in moments of crisis, the oldest was always in charge, and jihoon and you were amazing at keeping the household in tact.
but this, this was another level of crisis.
at least your parents. your very neglectful parents, won’t be coming back from their one-month vacation when they hear this piece of news.
i mean their children isn’t even their priority ever since you and jihoon, the twins were born.
they have never paid attention, never cared about you, so it was only left for you and jihoon to look out for each other
and you never understood why they decided to have two more, knowing that they hated children more than anything.
you felt someone shaking you from your thoughts. you looked up, to see jihoon looking at you with a stern expression.
“let’s get going, before our house gets invaded and puts us in danger too.” jihoon said, his voice firm.
you grabbed onto your bag, and the two survival kits you would always stock up underneath your bed, as the four of you proceeded off into the woods.
now you were definitely thankful that your house was situated near the forest.
you couldn’t even escape from the ear-splitting screams when you stepped out of the door. there were people shoving against you, crying, screaming and everything in between.
the town was chaos, and all of you never wanted more but to get out of there.
thank lord, you had a pistol each, something that you have safe keep after your grandfather passed away.
you lead the pack, while jihoon was at the back, making sure everyone was following.
your eyes wandered around, watching if there were any zombies that would block your way. from what the news said, due to how complex the chemicals were, the zombies were stronger, and smarter.
something that you certainly did not want to deal with.
“be careful, we do not want to be in for trouble.” you warned, your eyes glancing back at your siblings.
and all of you ran, ran as far as you could into the woods.
thankfully, these flora and fauna were not unfamiliar to you. this place was your hide out during your childhood, a place where all your siblings could hide away from your problems.
when you thought you were far away enough, you slowed down in your tracks, turning around to them.
“remember our secret hideout? we should go there.” you suggested.
“the old mineshaft?” seokmin asked, his eyes lighting up for the first time today.
“we should go there, it’s turning dark already. it’ll be dangerous to stay out here at night.” jihoon added, patting the back of the youngest as he catch his breath.
the group trotted their way towards the hideout, the place still looking like how you remembered it to be from 13 years ago.
you turned on the torchlight in your pocket, searching around the darkness, trying to find that one, safe spot where no one else could find all of you.
and as you turned to the right, a small, yet bright shine caught your eyes.
you used to put little trinkets at the hideout, which seemed to have been a great help today.
which the others seemed to have caught on.
“noona, it’s the crystal! you placed that there!” chan exclaimed, his finger pointing towards the direction.”
“wah, it’s my emotional support teddy! so i left you here all along!” seokmin walked to one end while speaking, his excitement apparent from his tone.
“let’s fascinate about our childhood later, alright? we need to find the hideout fast, before this place gets attacked as well.” you spoke, your voice a little shaky as you waved your torchlight around.
jihoon was beside you, while the other two were behind, talking and laughing about some childhood story, something about how you saw a bat, and ran out of the cave.
but you didn’t care at the moment, especially when all you cared about was the survival of all of you, especially your siblings.
and then from a distance, you see a familiar scarf — your scarf, one that you have always worn. your face relaxed almost instantly, nudging jihoon’s arm and tilting your chin towards it.
jihoon sighed in relief, announcing in a soft, yet relieved tone,
the hideout was like any other 8-year-old hideouts, filled with toys, pillows, lights, bringing a sense of nostalgia to you.
chan was sat on one of the cushions, reading his diary from years ago, while seokmin was admiring his collection of plush toys.
“look what i wrote! on this day, we found frogs right at the entrance of the cave, and noona was so scared she clung onto jihoon hyung. that is so noona!” he laughed, flipping to another page.
you were looking through your secret chest, one where you kept all your personal trinkets and essential items. you took out 2 maps, extra matches and batteries, and stocked up on some food. you also took this opportunity to rearrange all your bags, so that each of you had all the necessary items for the road ahead.
jihoon, on the other hand, was cooking up some dinner. he has always been the cook amongst the 4 of you, being able to cook up something with a few ingredients. seokmin approached him, causing jihoon to use this chance as well to teach him some culinary skills, which is crucial for this time.
“chan-ah! could you come here for a second?” you asked, without looking back.
he was quick to put the book aside, jogging up to you in no time.
“yes noona, what can i do?” he asked, crouching down to watch you.
“help me put these food cans into the bags, distribute them equally.” you instructed, pointing at the cans.
“and those that have cucumbers, you can give those to jihoon and i, you and seokmin can have others.” you added.
“noona you’re the best!” he exclaimed, immediately getting into the task.
after some moments, the 4 of you gathered in a circle, munching on your dinner, while discussing on your next plans.
“so, what shall we do if the zombies attack here?” jihoon started.
“i suggest we leave everything behind and just take the essentials, and stick to each other as we leave.” chan suggested, earning nods of agreement from the rest.
“we need to run as fast as we can, and have either a pistol or a grenade on hand, just in case we get into difficult situations.” jihoon added, taking another bite of the food.
“what if one of us trip and fall? and fall behind from the rest?” seokmin asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
“i won’t let that happen, not on my watch.” you mumbled through the food. “i’ll stay at the back just in case.”
seokmin nodded, playing with his food.
you noticed this, leaning closer to him and asked in a softer, concerned tone,
“what’s on your mind, seok?”
he looked up at you, sighing softly.
“i’m just, i’m scared. i don’t want to be separated from any of you. why must this happen? i just want some peace, and grow up with all of you, together.”
chan nodded, adding on, “me too, i rely on you and jihoon hyung so much, what if i can’t catch up?”
you sighed, a frown tugging at your lips.
“jihoon and i will teach the both of you as much as we can. from what i see, you two are just as capable as us. we will stick together, no matter what.”
you dug in your pocket, digging out 4 identical pendants.
“i found these while i was exploring. in the event where we get split up, we can find each other through these. when we see this, that’s when we know we’ve found each other.” you spoke, watching the 3 guys staring at them.
without a word, they took the pendants, one by one. jihoon stared at it for a moment, clenching it tightly in his hand.
“we will be connected with these.” he said with a firm tone.
you gave a side hug to chan, who was sitting beside you, while he was putting on the pendant around his neck. he stared at it, sighing.
“we will get through this, right?”
“we will.”
at night, all of you took shifts to watch the group. the caves were undeniably uncomfortable, but you were thankful that the cooling breeze, along with the pillows and seokmin’s collection of plushies gave all of you a sense of comfort.
jihoon was in the third shift. all of you took turns according to age. however, you couldn’t even sleep that night.
maybe it was the fear, or the unsettling feeling of the situation.
seokmin and chan were fast asleep, completely exhausted from the day of adventure and running.
you sat up, the fire you have made right at the centre still burning brightly. jihoon noticed this, turning towards your direction with a confused look.
“did i wake you up?” jihoon asked, his voice sleepy.
”no, i was awake this entire time, i only decided to sit up right now.” you replied, curling your legs towards your chest.
“you should get some sleep, you’ll need it for tomorrow. i can wake chan up to take over your shift.” he suggested, his head turning towards your direction to face you.
there was a moment of silence, your mind still in a mess, trying to string words together.
“i’m just.. worried. it is my priority to protect the three of you, making sure that you all are safe. but what if someone gets injured? or something happens to one of us?” you spoke, your feelings finally expressing themselves.
jihoon sighed, nodding. “i do think about it too, and i wish none of this happened. but now, let’s just do whatever we can, and make it out of this situation unscathed.”
you were about to speak again, when you heard from another side of the cave. an unsettling feeling settled in your heart, causing you to burn out the flames of the fire.
“i heard something, and i don’t think it’s good.” you spoke, the alertness in your beginning to be awaken.
jihoon acted immediately, shaking your younger siblings awake quietly, shushing them when they groaned from drowsiness.
you inched closer to the entrance of the hideout, peeking through the curtains, to see some shadows casted by the moonlight. a chill ran down your spine, closing the curtain immediately.
you turned around, speaking a hushed, but quick tone. “pack your bags, get everything. we’re leaving right now.”
that sent a surge of panic through all of you, and you were all quick to pick up your bags, collecting any other important materials just in case.
jihoon put on a headband, while seokmin clasped his hands in nervousness. chan was looking around warily, before whispering to you,
“noona, years ago i found an alternate exit in the cave. let’s go there instead, i’ll lead the way.”
chan pointed at a direction, your gaze following his hand. you nodded, before signalling to the rest of the group to start moving.
the footsteps neared, causing a wave of panic to rise in you. you rushed them, reminding them to be as quiet, but as quick as possible.
chan lit up a small stick, pointing in front of him, figuring out a way to get out of the cave.
you followed behind, looking back every few seconds to check that no one was following you.
all of you were quiet. no one dared to speak. your footsteps were quiet, a vast contrast to your mind, which was spiralling from thoughts.
you checked your watch, the pointers ticking softy.
you sighed gently, looking to the front again, only to see chan come to a standstill.
the roads were split to two.
chan took a step back, hitting his back against jihoon.
“i-i can’t remember which way to go..” he spoke, his voice filled with worry.
the 4 of you stared at the columns, jihoon grasping onto the map to see which way to go.
“it’s too dangerous to split, we have no forms of communication.” you said, your eyes wandering around.
that was when seokmin stepped forward, licking his finger and pointed it upwards.
“i learnt this somewhere, we’ll follow the direction of the wind.” he suggested, his eyes closing to fully feel the gust of the wind.
after a few moments, he felt it. a subtle, yet obvious blow of the wind crossing right at his finger. his eyes spread open, pointing towards the right column.
“good job, seok. let’s go.” jihoon complimented in his usual stoic voice, before leading the rest through the cave. you patted seokmin’s back, reassuring him.
“you’re great at this.” you praised.
“learnt it from the best.” he replied.
after what seemed like forever, and going through a few other split roads, your eyes landed on the night sky, the rays of the sun peeking through ever so slightly. you sighed in relief, breathing in the fresh air.
“we made it out, alive.” you said, laughing a little.
all of them nodded, turning towards you.
“so now what?” seokmin asked, continuing to walk.
“we can continue finding supplies, maybe find a shelter, or…” jihoon suggested, before getting cut off by you.
“we should find more supplies, to stock up in case we run low.”
seokmin stepped forward, his eyebrows furrowing at your words.
“isn’t it logical to find a shelter, so we all can at least be safe?”
“but what if during so, we ran out and have nothing else to live on?” you rebutted.
“then we’ll find it faster, we can’t stay out in the woods in the dark. it’s too dangerous!”
“this is survival, seokmin. the shelters might be too far. you need to understand we need to ensure that we live!”
“but in order to live, you need to be logical. right now, you’re being illogical!”
“we’ll just walk and see if we can find anything.” you spoke, sighing as you walked, but seokmin stopped you.
“we can’t just walk without a purpose, we need to move towards a direction, not mindlessly!”
“god can’t you just trust me on this?” you spoke, raising your voice in anger
“you can’t take advantage just because you’re the oldest one. you need to hear me out, about my suggestion too!”
“not everything can go your way, seokmin-ah. if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work!”
seokmin and you continued fighting, shouting curse words and insults at each other. jihoon and chan stopped in their tracks, trying to cool the both of you down, but to no avail.
“you’re a terrible sister! i’ve never hated you more, noona!” seokmin yelled, sending silence to all of you.
you stood there, in shock, in disbelief. after everything, he hated you?
seeming to have realised how big of a mistake he have made by saying that, seokmin stuttered, trying to say something when he got silenced by the footsteps getting closer.
all of you turned around, to see a large group of zombies trotting towards the 4 of you, holding onto large, dangerous objects.
everyone froze at the sight, to the point you had to shout at them, for the first time.
“what are all of you waiting for? run!”
and you ran. you have never ran so fast. jihoon led the pack, shouting out any dangerous objects and obstacles that could possibly obstruct your path.
seokmin took out and held onto the map, the one you trusted him with, trying to read out any directions.
while they were figuring out the path, you scrambled through your pockets, to take out the grenade you picked up a few days ago at the abandoned mine. you bit the pin out with your teeth, before turning around to throw it towards the pack of zombies, sending out a huge explosion.
“nice one, noona!” chan complimented, which your responded with a thumbs up.
and suddenly, all of you stumbled at a large fence.
you turned around, noticing that a large number of the zombies were defeated from the grenade, but many of them were still charging towards all of you.
you analysed the height, before putting your bag down, rolling back your shoulders.
“c’mon, we can only hope over. chan, hop on my shoulder.”
you were strong, very actually. you could carry chan, something that you have practiced since young. but chan seemed hesitant, but seeing your determined look, he climbed onto you, carrying himself over the fence.
you glanced at jihoon, who looked at you with the same gaze. maybe it was the twin telepathy, but jihoon did the same thing, carrying seokmin, helping him over the fence.
the both of them landed on the mud with a loud thud.
you threw their bags, filled with food and survival materials that you packed, over the fence, letting the both of the catch them, when jihoon interrupted.
“y/n there’s not enough time.”
you turned around, to see the zombies were closer than you think.
you had to think on your feet. if either you or jihoon jumped over, there would be no way the other gets over. but if the four of you split apart, it seemed more sensible, especially because it was the younger two at the other side.
you turned to chan and seokmin, holding onto your breath as you spoke, “run. now the both of you. find a safe zone. don’t look back.”
that sent the three of them into a shock.
“noona, no. we need you! we need you and jihoon hyung.” chan argued, seeming like he was about to cry.
you shook your head, trying to reason out with him.
“there’s no time. it’s better for the both of us to stick rather than have one of us stuck here.” you responded, your breath shaking.
“you two need to find somewhere safe. y/n and i taught the both of you many survival hacks. use them, well. if anything, that bag has a survival guide.” jihoon added, pointing at seokmin’s bag.
seokmin wanted to say something, when all of you heard loud roars from behind.
shedding a tear, you held onto both seokmin and chan’s hand from the other side.
“go. go. for us. go save yourself. just remember, we love you, no matter what happens. and we will find our ways back together.”
chan was crying, and seokmin was trying to process everything.
“noona, hyung, i love you, i really do.” seokmin said, his voice cracking.
“go now. we’ll be fine.” jihoon said with a firm voice, holding onto your hand.
all of you exchanged one last look together, when seokmin ran, running with chan’s hand in his hold. chan yelled, his gaze still locked with you and jihoon.
“NOONA, NO. I LOVE YOU, PLEASE.”
you had to fight back your tears, because you had a larger battle to fight. the both of you turned around, each holding a grenade in your hand.
“now or never, y/n. we’ll throw this, and run. run towards the west.” jihoon instructed.
he gave your hand one last squeeze, indicating to activate the grenade.
the both of you bit the pin out, throwing it across at the zombies, creating a loud destruction.
jihoon pulled you. he pulled you so hard you almost fell.
and the both of you ran. you ran without turning back.
