“Throwing shade” originated in the gay & trans community in the 1980s. As seen in the documentary “Paris Is Burning”, Dorian Corey explains "Shade is, I don't have to tell you you're ugly, because you know you're ugly,". Throwing shade isn’t just insulting someone. It’s pointing out & exaggerating their flaws. It’s a sarcastic complement to someone about a certain feature which makes them insecure. “I don’t have to tell you you’re ugly, because you know you’re ugly” For example, saying “That dress is ugly” isn’t throwing shade.
