(Judges 8:33)
After hearing the cries of His people, God raised up Gideon to deliver the children of Israel from their oppressors, the Midianites. But it wasn't long after the death of Gideon that the children of Israel turned away from serving God and back to worshipping idols.
The children of Israel were never able to maintain faithfulness to God because they kept taking their eyes off of Him, and onto what pleased their flesh. The pleasures of the flesh lasted for a while, until they found themselves right back under the control of their enemies, crying out to God for help.
God is a faithful God who demands faithfulness from His people. Unfaithfulness always leads to a fall that has consequences. Jesus died so we could be free from the powers of sin and death, not so we could have the knowledge of that but continue to walk in unfaithfulness to Him. The enemy loves it when we take our eyes off the things of God. He will use lust, impatience, jealousy, envy, hatred, high mindedness, and self seeking ambitions to get us to take our minds off of God and onto the things of his deception. That's why we must trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding; but in all our ways acknowledge Him, so He can direct our path (Proverbs 3:5-6).
