okay okay okay. i am reblogging this again to talk more about this scene bc i don't think i've ever seen anything like this in bl and i need to get my thoughts out there.
what makes love sea rather unique in the bl landscape imo is that mut and rak are both incredibly kinky, and that their kinks in the bedroom have little to no impact on their dynamic outside of it.
there are other bls that show couples having kinky sex for sure. i'm going to use vegaspete kinnporsche and payurain love in the air as examples because they're probably the most well-known ones, and in these cases, their dynamic outside of the bedroom clearly influences their dynamic inside it. payu and rain have the most undernegotiated 24/7 dom/sub relationship of all time and pete goes from being kidnapped and tortured by vegas to asking him to tie him up and take control sexually.
but rak and mut have a very, very different set-up where the person who holds more power outside of the bedroom is rak (who is older, richer, more privileged, who basically calls all the shots and whose demands mut yields to: he signs the contract, he takes the money, in his apology in episode 6 he explicitly frames himself as having no right to treat rak with disrespect because rak bought him and is expecting obedience from him)—i do think this is going to change soon, because rak said in episode 3 that he likes that mut doesn't listen to him, that he likes that mut treats him as just another person and is his beautifully annoying self around him, but this is something rak needs to work out for himself until he understands that the contract and the money are getting in the way of what he truly wants from mut deep down, which is a relationship between equals.
but i digress. my point is that this show makes it crystal clear that mutrak's dom/sub dynamic is something that only comes out in the bedroom, and is seen by both characters as just that: consensual kink. both of these characters are sexually experienced and know what they like (and clocked each other as dominant and submissive respectively the first time they made out at the beach: when mut said "open your mouth" in the rudest possible way while leaving off the polite particles and rak immediately obeyed, i was already in heaven). this is different from both payurain and vegaspete, where the submissive character is inexperienced and in rain's case seemingly shocked and confused by everything that is going on, and a big part of both rain's and pete's story is them having to grapple with their own desires (although in rain's case that's more like, implied, than actually shown on screen as a character journey).
not so in love sea! rak knows exactly what he's into and he and mut just fit together sexually from the get-go. which is actually a big part of the reason why they like each other so much! they spent their time on the island having some damn good satisfying sex and that in turn enabled them to open up to each other emotionally.
but i wanted to talk about the scene in this video specifically because it actually blew my mind.
what is happening here is that mut gets turned on by rak sleeping in his arms, completely vulnerable and defenceless, and touches him with sexual intent (once again with his thumb in rak's mouth, thank you tptb for allowing me to have this), and rak is into it. i cannot overstate how significant this is. i think this is the closest thing to consensual somnophilia i have ever seen depicted on screen. rak isn't quite asleep, he's very much participating and knowingly riling mut up, but the fact that it's canon that mut is into sleepy rak hit me like a ton of bricks. their sexual dynamic is so incredibly kinky and both of them are so clearly on the same page about it, it's just wonderful to see. they both like a bit of back-and-forth, rak pretends he wants to sleep twice and expects mut to seduce him anyway, which he does! (also do not talk to me about mut holding rak's hands down Like That because i will literally implode 😵💫)
i feel like this episode is really significant in showing us that as their feelings for each other deepen, they also get more comfortable in their kink dynamic. i don't think mut would have done any of this back in episode 2, and i also don't think he would have fucked rak's mouth the way he does at the end of episode 6—in episode 3, he was still politely asking for a blowjob, after all 🤭
i just love that this show actually uses its sex scenes to show how the sexual and emotional relationship between the characters is developing. their intimate scenes aren't just incredibly hot, but they also tell a story of their own, which is informed by their dynamic outside of the bedroom but also its own thing. at this point in the story, rak and mut aren't yet on the same page emotionally, but they are very much on the same page sexually. and that is such a unique thing to see in bl! i think wandee goodday also tried to do something like this but unfortunately failed to make the emotional development between yak and dee make sense, so it's not a very successful example of this kind of story.
if i know my bl tropes, in episode 10, we might see mut and rak having gentle loving vanilla sex as a sign of their love for each other, but i personally am very much hoping that they'll still be kinky about the consummation of their true love. it's just so wonderful to see a bl couple who are kinky and who are both aware of what they're into and who are able to keep their dom/sub dynamic exclusively to the bedroom while having a completely different dynamic outside of sex.
