Footnotes are starting to vanish from books and appear online instead. Nathan Heller explains why this is a problem:
âIf the goal is to retain readers, publishers should show how much books can do. If the object is authority, writers ought to earn it.â

All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.

Received these sweet parting gifts from a close NYC friend. Dr. Seuss has never hit closer to home. Excited to begin a new chapter in Washington D.C.

A look at how state by state enrollment compares to what government officials expected before the law went into effect. Complete with a cool sortable chart.Â
More on my beat of  the crazy things companies and officials do to get young people's attention: H&R Block is using scarves, mustaches and red-rimmed glasses to sell tax prep to millennials SLASH hipsters. Will it work?
Would a $1,200 prize get you to learn more about Obamacare? In my latest story I write about groups trying to sell the Affordable Care Act to young people in terms they might actually understand: music, jokes and cash.Â

Today in 1932: Radio City Music Hall opens with an overabundant variety program that lasts for over six hours and includes guest precision dancers known as the âRoxyettesâ the formula is a failure and is soon changed to include a feature film and a shortened stage show.

"It's Christmas time in the city..." Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays all!
Above all, do you understand that you are not as important as what youâre covering We are now in an era when the I-lost-my-laundry-while-covering-Yalta school of reporting has become an epidemic; when serious books that involve reporting often tend to be suffused with the authorâs admiration of his own investigative techniques; when the narcissism of the press almost outstrips the narcissism elsewhere in the country. The image of the journalist as wallflower at the orgy has been replaced by the journalist as the life of the party.

Well said Nora, well said.
Poetry is part of everything. You canât have a really good work if itâs not touched by poetry. Poetry manifests itself in millions of ways: as rhythm, metaphor, mood. Sometimes itâs a type of emotional outpouring or necessity thatâs not expressed through characters but through feelings. To me, poetry is the tragic sense of man. Itâs a way of seeing things in the most complete way, the most absolute, and, to a certain extent, the most perfect. Where thereâs no poetry, thereâs no beauty, and without beauty no kind of artistic work can exist.

Today I'm thankful for blue skies, a warm home, a generous family, true friends and new beginnings. Happy Thanksgiving all!
You can ask the universe for all the signs you want, but ultimately, we see what we want to see when weâre ready to see it.
