the strobe lights flickered in your eyes, the patterns of the flashes burning into the back of your skull. not a single person could touch you tonight. your small black dress and matching heels were little comfort in the big sea of people surrounding you.

a few minutes pass, until suddenly a platinum blonde girl sits on the stool next to your right. “hey, you’re the friend of..?” she looks at you, and you just roll your eyes and nod.

“how can you even tell?” you ask with more attitude than you would’ve liked. but, in all-seriousness, this entire thing was bullshit. you got dragged to a party for a person you don’t know, and got ditched. then you have to stick around for someone you don’t know? it’s utter bull.

“you seem like the only person here not having a good time, i guess.” her voice seems to have genuine concern. you consider ordering a drink, but choose not to. the last thing you need right now is to be intoxicated.

you turn to her. “can we go somewhere quiet?” you’re making a face, like everything you’re experiencing is just too much. she nods and holds out your hand to grab, which you do reluctantly.

she drags you to a bathroom, of course. every bedroom in the house is occupied. she closes the door and locks it, so as to prevent anyone from barging in. the soft glow of the dim blue lighting hits your faces, and you can even hear the humming of the lights fighting to stay on. the music from outside is loud still, but bearable.

“thanks,” you run a hand through your hair. “um.. i don’t think i’ve got your name yet?”

she chuckles. “right, right, i’m phoebe. i’m a friend of don’s. he produces some of my music.”

your eyes go wide. of course! phoebe bridgers. god, how could you be so stupid? you try to play it off, but phoebe can tell the cogs in your head are beginning to turn.

“oh, yeah. i can’t believe them right now.” you scoff.

“yeah, that shit’s pretty fucked up.. leaving you alone like that.”

i gesture to her. “clearly not that alone.”

she laughs. a real, genuine laugh. “very true.”

you go quiet. it’s getting awkward. phoebe is beautiful, and she’s tempting. if your friend can run off to have some fun, why can’t you? but at the same time, who’s to say phoebe would even agree to such an affair? your mind starts to wander, and she catches it.

“hey, you good?” she asks, placing a hand on your shoulder. it feels like electricity coursing through you. you nod and pull away, pushing yourself up onto the counter and sitting with your back against the mirror, legs crossed. all of it is so utterly tempting.

“why are you wasting your time with me?” you ask bluntly. it’s an honest question. she could be doing anything else, and yet she’s locked herself in a bathroom with a girl she doesn’t know.

phoebe furrows her brows. “what do you mean?”

you give her a look. “you know what i mean. i’m sure you have other friends here.” you look down at your hands, playing with them in your lap.

“none of them are as interesting as you.” she steps closer.
