âWhat have I been doing during quarantine?â He cocks his head to the side. â...Hm. Well... It might be better to ask what I havenât done?â
âWhat have I been doing during this quarantine shit show, you ask?â He lights up a cigarette, took a puff and his shoulders relaxed. âYour parents.â Another puff. âWhile you were asleep in the next room.â
David subtly winced.Â
Thereâs no avoiding the vomit now. Itâs seeping onto the floors, getting on his shoes. Note to self: hugs during times like this? Very very bad idea. Heâs assuming theyâve had a flashback, again, but doesnât hold it against them. He even can care less about the shoes. âStay right there. Iâll be right back...â His voice is calm and reassuring. Gentle as he can make it. Thinking quickly, he stepped out of his shoes and avoided the rest of the mess, barking for Josh to come quickly.
Josh comes to his aid and to his credit doesnât even utter a single word of complaint as he helps with towels, thereâs a mop bucket and mop, etc. And the two of them quickly start cleaning up the mess. Partway through, Josh shooed him away, encouraging him to actually tend to Angel.
âWill you come with me?â David lets it be a question, not a demand. âMaybe a change of clothes, a quick shower, thatâll help.â

David tensed in response to their own tension. As they let his shirt go and their comforting presence vanishes from up against him, he half turned, eyeing them carefully. At the mention of Phila and Chase, he feels a frisson of guilt. âWe can go together, butâŚ.â He reached for his own cheek, then gestured to where the most of the blood splatter covers their face.
âIt might be better to get cleaned up first.â
No need to panic the kiddies after all.Â
âCleaned upââ Angel repeated, voice still quiet. Realization dawned on them, why David would say that. The blood on his hands⌠where he gestured to his cheek, slowly they reached up and lightly touched their own. It had dried, but it was still an eerie thoughtâŚ
To have their motherâs BLOOD on themâŚ
DirtyâŚ
DisgustingâŚ
FILTHYâŚ
Angelâs hands began shaking. They were starting to feel sick again, face paling slightly. The memories⌠they remember the stench of blood⌠the pen⌠the look in her eyes and the sound she made.
No no noâ no⌠no⌠It was necessary⌠it wasâŚ
It was going to make Angel sick again. Eyes shut tightly, their hand moved to their mouth and covered it. Deep, heavy breaths as they tried to calm the churning of their stomach.
They want to forget⌠forget that ever happened⌠but itâs so burned into their head nowâŚ
David could kick his own ass. Or at least punch himself repeatedly in the face. He should have known better than to so casually remark on the blood splatter. Angel is gentle and good and not at all like anyone David knows. Their motherâs violent death is something that would happen on a casual T-shirt Tuesday maybe, something heâs used to doing even if it wasnât as frequently as normal anymore. âBaby, I...â Shit, abort. More than likely they didnât want him to be this familiar right now. âI, that is...â Grasping at straws, he instead made a frustrated noise, irritated at his inability to string a sentence together. Something comforting, soothing. He moved without thought, reaching for them, wanting to offer a hug since words are failing right now.
Zoyaâs eyes swept over Adrianaâs attire and took note of the fact that it made her seem younger, softer. Anyone less skilled with guile or subterfuge would have fallen for such a gimmick or at least underestimated the young woman, because this is a woman, regardless of her age, or written her off as easy pickings. Brushing a strand of errant hair behind her ear, she she smiled, closed mouth but no less beautiful for it.Â
âWeâve had a very good day, all told, thank you for asking.â Incling her head respectfully to the other. ChĹŤichi pulled out her chair for her and she sank down into it with an enviable, easy grace. The blonde man glanced at Adi, then at the youngerâs chair.Â
Gesturing towards it vaguely, he is half around the table to do the same as heâd done for his wife, only to pause, âMay I?â He murmured.Â
David tensed in response to their own tension. As they let his shirt go and their comforting presence vanishes from up against him, he half turned, eyeing them carefully. At the mention of Phila and Chase, he feels a frisson of guilt. âWe can go together, but....â He reached for his own cheek, then gestured to where the most of the blood splatter covers their face.
âIt might be better to get cleaned up first.â
No need to panic the kiddies after all.Â
Itâs probably a good thing that Josh had gone on ahead further inside the house instead of lingering. David had resigned himself to working up from ground zero, to having to fight for scraps of their affection.Â
Heâd been prepared to beg and plead and sweet talk, because thatâs all he knew how to do, what he was taught, shown. However once again Angel proved they are unpredictable and he shouldnât underestimate them or their capacity to forgive.
Embarrassingly enough, he can feel tears sting at the corner of his eyes. His hand covered theirs, holding onto them, at first to make sure that they were okay and wouldnât injure themself but then they were saying everything he had wanted to hear, what he needed...
He laughed softly and it came out sounding a little like a sob. Quickly though, he got himself together, or at least made the effort. Squeezing their hands gently, thumb rubbing rhythmic circles over their palm, itâs something that comforts and grounds him. âI donât know what I did to deserve someone as good as you, but Iâll never take you for granted. From now on, I promise Iâll do better, to be someone worthy of you. To be good. I love you...â

âYouâre such a snitch,â David remarked, disgusted with his childhood friend. âNiwa-papa would have found out, I just⌠helped the situation along.â Josh retorted, tone ambivalent. Jerking his head towards the direction of the car. âThe two of you should come inside. Iâm preparing ginger rice and miso salmon.â Furtively, David glanced over his shoulder to see that Angel is peering out the car window and hesitated momentarily. Josh jabbed him with his elbow. âDonât be a coward. Goâ David started to say something and the other cut him a look. âAlright, alright, Iâm going!â Walking over to the car again, he ducked his head half way in. â⌠I know you said you wanted space but Josh is cooking. SoâŚâ
Angel could hear their voices. Josh is a snitch, and whomever this âNiwa-papaâ is, would have found out about this situation regardless if Josh told him or not. That doesnât sound good. Are they⌠like mercenaries? It would⌠kind of explain a few things?
Now didnât feel like the time to be asking.Â
David was back at the car and lightly poked his head in, stating that food was being made. Mmm, it sounded good. Made them salivate. It had been a while since theyâve had salmon, what with fish not being something they made often due to Philaâs general dislike and phobia of them.
Angel glanced down to the seat for a few moments, letting silence linger between them before shifting their gaze back up to David. They stare at him with some uncertainty⌠but thereâs no fear. A few more moments pass, and they turn away and proceed to get out of the car. The car door is shut after they get out, lifting up their arms to cover their chest and used the sleeves to cover the bottom half of their face.
The jacket still kind of smells like David⌠but it now has that sweet, earthy smell to it⌠a nice combination.
David is a little let down that they currently arenât speaking to him but he cautioned that slow and steady won the race. No sudden movements or surprises, let them come to him in their own time. Ducking back out of car, he swiped a hand through his hair, already walking towards the house, glancing back to see if theyâre following.

Shoulders relaxing a tad, heâs cautiously happy that they admitted to still loving him. He can work with that. He can still fix thisâŚhopefully, over time. Although heâs reluctant, David gets out of the car first, and Josh passed him the cellphone. Well, just fuck him sideways then. Accepting the cellular device, he raised it to his ear, turning his back and said hello into the mouth piece. Closing his eyes, he listened to Chuichi as the older man subtly built up to chewing him out for reckless behavior, the lack of planning, his part in hiding Bunjiro, etc. Lastly ending with the promise of a home visit in the near future.
Angel feels the tension leaving David⌠which is good. He doesnât need to be stressed out⌠neither of them do. Once the car door is closed, the Maiden proceeds to lay back down on the seat and idly play with the gravel and flower petals again.
Itâs a mystery where they came from⌠to Angel, anyways. It smells good⌠earthy⌠sweet⌠comforting. The headache is beginning to dwindle, but that leaves them focusing on other things. The grimy feel on their hand from the vomit and the taste in their mouth. The hunger.Â
The wondering⌠subconsciously aware of Virgo, the Spirit within them⌠if that moment of blacking out⌠Angel knows Aries can take over Arin, thatâs a fact⌠did Virgo take over? No⌠no thatâs never happened before, why would it now?Â
It doesnât matter. They need to focus more at the situation at hand.
Something isnât right with David⌠if he thinks murder is a solution, something is WRONG. He needs to know thatâs not okay. It will never be okay.
They have to be strong⌠he wonât hurt them⌠hopefully⌠hopefully⌠but they have to be ready⌠just in case he triesâŚ
Doubt is not healthy for a relationship, they realize⌠but⌠murder isnât good either. Relationships should be built on trust, communication, andâŚ
Their growling stomach interrupts their thoughts. Damn, they were hungry⌠Angel buries their face into their arm, breathing a heavy sigh before sitting back up. They peer out the window where David and Josh were at, waiting patiently for⌠what exactly, they arenât too sure. A phone call, by the looks of itâŚ
âYouâre such a snitch,â David remarked, disgusted with his childhood friend. âNiwa-papa would have found out, I just... helped the situation along.â Josh retorted, tone ambivalent. joinusinthedarkâ:
âDo you want toâŚâ He exhaled quietly. âI can grab some Tylenol for you, if you donât feel comfortable coming inside?â By the time he went in the house, that would be ample opportunity for Angel to make a break for it, if they really wanted to.Â
Again, the urge to apologize is on the tip of his tongue and yet David canât form the words.Â
He wouldnât sincerely be apologizing for their motherâs death, for their reaction to it now? For letting them see him do it? Yes, he was sorry about that.Â
Before he could fully think up something else to say, Josh was knocking lightly against the window. Cutting him a âAre you fucking serious?â look, the younger merely shrugged, slightly apologetic, he made a telephone gesture and mouthed âChuichiâ.Â
Ice sluiced in his veins.
Holding up a finger, asking for a little more time. Josh nodded and stepped back and then away.Â
Turning back to Angel, he almost reached out to touch them, but at the last second changed his mind. âI just want you to know that youâre always safe with me. No matter what, whatever you decide and whatever comes next.âÂ
They are remembering why David⌠why him, above all people theyâve met, to try and get to know, to disobey the family and step out of the mold the family had shoved them into.
David had always put them and their comfort first. Above all else, even before himself, Angel was always first. Everything heâs done is for them.
The Maiden hears the light knocking on the window, lifting their gaze up to see Josh just outside of the door. Thereâs a moment of silence, Josh gestures something, and David tenses. Ever so slightly, but he does. Angel shifts their gaze down to the seat once again, staring at the gravel and flower petals.Â
The two of them need to talk⌠a long, serious talk⌠but theyâre so tired right now. Mentally exhausted. No doubt David is too. They just want something for their headache, some food, a shower⌠bundle up in warm, comfortable clothes and just⌠rest.
âI still love youâŚâ Angel whispers quietly, keeping their gaze focused on the seat. âAnd⌠I will⌠I just need⌠some time, pleaseâŚâ

Could he fit that into his schedule? Potentially. Did he want to, especially when its clear that Mayfield-san intends to possibly further inquire and try and weasel him out of this necklace? Not particularly, and yetâŚÂ âI can make that appointment, and Iâll bring a plus one with me, if thatâs agreeable.âÂ
Her lips curved up in a smile at the agreement from the other, Adriana knew, knew without a single shadow of a doubt that it would be all the more easy to claim her birthright from him!
After all, she only held one year older than his twins.. and if worse came to worse, she had the perfect bribe.
âI would love that Niwa-san. I hope you have a good evening until we meetâ Â With that parting she hung up very neatly and nodded to herself. She had a date to prepare herself for.
and if she knew Niwa going by what she learnt from ten minutes of browsing his name on the internet? Heâd be doing all sorts of digging.
As soon as she hung up, he had a two way phone call with Dayu and Zoya.Â
Naturally, Zoya agreed to come along as his plus one and to scope out the person attempting to pilfer her present from her. It didnât matter that originally the necklace belonged to someone else, itâd been bought with their money and thus it made it theirs.
Dayu had little information to offer about Adriana, though there was more about her family, apparently. It raised red flags for his best hacker, who emphasized a clear head and to be cautious.Â
That warning was taken seriously.
He was always cautious but it wouldnât be terrible to really play it safe.Â
By the time the meeting was scheduled to take place, Zoya was dressed in one of her finest outfits; red truly being her color, the earrings  and necklace only making her all the more radiant to look at, to make a statement. He hadnât escaped her clever hands and went along with allowing her to dress him. The suit highlighted his best features, making him âlook commanding and debonairâ and the watch, a gift from a business partner last Christmas, was still in style and subtle enough to catch a personâs eye and hold it.
When the walked in Raos together, they garnered quite a bit of attention.
How to make them understand his point of view?Â
Everything heâd so carefully been building with them is slipping through his fingers like grains of sand or drops of water. All because of his lapse in control. â...You were gone from me for days. I didnât know whether you were dead or alive. If I should file a missing personâs report or wait, and the first time I see you again, itâs in a hospital.â
Despite the crossroads the two of them are on right now, David doesnât regret stabbing their mother. In fact, he wishes that she were alive so that he had the chance to do it again.Â
To do it right, slowly.Â
Watching as they visibly retreated into themself, repeating that they were fine...Â
It hurt.Â
It hurt so bad but itâs an understandable reaction.

Josh pays no heed to any of this, unbuckling himself and getting out of the car.
David is left with his hands outstretched, reaching for them. He looks so lost and confused. And then their words register. Features paling, wondering if heâd lose his lunch all over the backseat but he swallows once, twice. Heâs left with a lingering acidic taste that almost makes him want to throw up =anyway.Â
âI....â His voice is quiet, hesitant. âIâm not going to...to h-hurt you....â Heâs stumbling over his words now, great. âYou donât have to....to be good... I promised not to hurt you and I meant it. I mean it.â A shaky inhale, the sound rattling in the air.Â
âAngel, please...â
âEverything alright now back there?â Josh inquired, not bothering to look back and see for himself. They were coming close to the house though, just a few streets to go.Â
âShut up, theyâre sleeping.â David reprimanded, voice practically a hiss.
âYou shouldnât be so quick to promise such things, by the way. Itâs foolish and foolhardy. One day youâre going to get caught in a situation you canât slicktalk your way out of.â Josh half warned, being serious.Â
Davidâs fingers gently brushed through their hair. âI know... Theyâre worth it though.â
Josh shook his head mutely, a sigh escaping.Â
âI guess you really do live and learn the hard way...â
Davidâs house is in sight now.
