When you’re in an outside lane (1,2,7,8), even with 20/20 vision, you CAN’T SEE the top-seeded competitors — i.e. Emma McKeon who won bronze from Lane 3 and Zhang Yufei who won silver from Lane 4 — unless you purposefully turn your head to look, which is very unnatural to do in butterfly and in a shorter race like the 100m isn’t time-effective
So, MacNeil quite literally won the race blind.
