I have been working tirelessly to expand my skills behind the bar creating tinctures, homemade bitters and a variety of syrups and shrubs. All is right with the universe.

I had a plan. My plan was to plant a crapton of lemon balm seeds in a small area where I already have a thriving balm shrub and let them take over. I love the way lemon balm tastes and the fact that it repels insects is just a huge bonus. So, today, I finally got outside to plant seeds after several days of rain and wind. Nasturtium, pineapple sage, basil, a variety of Johnny jump-ups, Rosemary, a few tomato plants... And the lemon balm. Sure enough, I got down to the small plot I had planned on tilling up and planting in and noticed a lot of familiar leaves had popped up. I wasn't exactly sure why I recognized them and then it dawned on me: I have a small trellis that I placed pots on and grew Johnny Jump-ups in last summer. I had recently noticed that they were coming back on their own in the pots (they are perennial) after a very mild winter, and -apparently- had spread from their planters. In an area I had planned to grown lemon balm in, I now have Johnny Jump-ups growing wild. In no less than eight different places so far. So... Yeah, plans have changed. If you wind up at my house for a meal this summer, just be prepared to be served violas on something. I'll probably have a lot...

The Simpsons "All singing, all dancing"

It's April, and yesterday I woke up to this. Time is slipping away as spring has already started and I hadn't put a lot of thought into what I'm going to do this year for my garden. Today, however, I finalized my plans and nailed down a concept I had planned to stick to but immediately deviated from... My plan, after an exceptional year of growing edible flowers and a not so exception year of actual produce. While, last year, I was able to gather zucchini flowers for stuffing, I only got one actual zucchini. The pumpkin I planted had a tremendous vine that never bore any fruit. My watermelon radish never grew, and I only got ONE tomato plant to grow last year and that didn't actually happen until October. W, directly, TF?? This year, my plan is to do only herbs and edible flowers. Well, it was my plan... As I was reading through the Baker Creek seed catalog, I saw their ad for Minibel tomato plants. Like, little tiny shrubs that grow in pots and produce craptons of little cherry-like tomatoes. So I had to get those seeds. Then there was the listing for Tzimbalo melon pears. Supposedly they taste like kiwis and grapes. So those went in the basket too. My plan is still to focus on edible flowers and a variety of herbs. I still have my Rosemary, lemon thyme and chocolate mint from last year. This year, I'll be doing Szechuan Buttons again, as students, co-ops and colleagues have asked about them. I'll be doing nasturtium again, as I loved the peppery goodness they had. Finally, my favorite will make a comeback: Johnny Jump Ups. I actually have three types I'll be trying this year: Heirloom, Helen mount, and Sorbet. Or course, there are things that just keep coming back that I'm not sure what to do with. The lemon balm is a keeper. I like how it helps with bugs and it tastes great. The strawberries and asparagus, however? Yeah. I only get like three stalks of asparagus all year and the damned rabbits take care of the strawberries. Then there is the wild garlic chives. Those I like, but their everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Finally, there is a lot of lavender growing in my yard. I like grilling and throwing a full branch of that on the coals. Of using it to make a shrub for cocktails. I'm hoping this year will be a prosperous one for our yard. Well, a prosperous one once spring ACTUALLY GETS HERE. Sheesh...

I really need to find Hanzo Steel Vol. 2... I should have looked for it as soon as I got Vol. 1 but I found it in a $2 bin at Skool Kids in Exile in Ann Arbor more than 10 years ago. eBay, here I come...
