A couple of comics that I read this weekend: 1) “And Now, Sir - Is This Your Missing Gonad?” by Jim Woodring. I’m a big fan of Jim Woodring’s art, pitched as it as as midway between an illuminated manuscript and Mickey Mouse. His stories tend to make me a bit uneasy, which is admittedly intentional. This is different than the Frank stories I’ve read, in that it is essentially a series of single panel gags, where the reader has to decide how the text provided (which occasionally feels like found text) illuminates the panel that accompanies it. Who is speaking? What is the intent? The solid colored pages bring to mind Charles Schulz’s “Happiness Is A Warm Puppy”. I liked this. 2) “Miss Fury” by Tarpé Mills. At the suggestion of artist @ryanheshka, I sought out a book by Tarpé Mills, a woman who was one of the first comic artists. Miss Fury was a newspaper strip that ran from 1941 to 1952, and featured a heroine that dresses not unlike Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. I’ve been watching a lot of giallos recently, and this would have made a terrific one. The portrait of the artist as a young twink. I started from a photobooth portrait of me from probably three decades ago. Then I noticed the tulips I got last week spontaneously dropped all their petals, so I was playing around with them on the plate, and this eventually happened.
