The day you met John Logan was a day you'd never forget.
It happened during freshman year. It was supposed to be a day spent training for the upcoming intercollegiate figure skating event. However, when you got to the ice rink reserved for the figure skating team, it was closed off due to a gas leak.
"Oh... So what are we gonna do now, Coach?" you hear the team captain, Amanda, ask Coach Briggs.
Briggs remains quiet for a second before answering, "I could call in a favor with Coach Jensen..." he suggested.
"Coach Jensen? Like... the hockey team's coach?" you asked.
"No, the football team's coach... Obviously the hockey team's coach, insert name!" Amanda says sarcastically.
You knew not to take anything Amanda said personally because she tended to say things like that when she was stressed.
After a brief phone call with Coach Jensen, the team headed toward the hockey arena.
As you entered the arena, you thought about how you'd be skating on ice that got shredded almost every day...
You were so deep in thought that you hadn't even noticed the person approaching until you bumped right into him.
"Oh—" "Shit—"
You both swore as you stumbled. Before you could fall, the stranger caught you by the waist. Your hands flew to his shoulders for stability. You looked up to apologize, but the words died on your tongue when you met a pair of warm brown eyes belonging to a rather attractive boy.
"Sorry..." He beat you to it.
You blinked, then cleared your throat. "No, I'm sorry. I should've been watching where I was walking," you say sheepishly.
"Nah, you're alright. I wasn't paying much attention either, honestly." The handsome stranger replied, taking his hands off your waist and stepping back. "What are you doing here anyway?"
"I could ask you the same thing," you say, immediately regretting it.
He laughs. "I asked first..."
After hearing his soft laughter, you decided you liked it and needed to hear it again. So at the risk of sounding stupid, you reply, "And I asked second. What's your point?"
He laughs once more. "Fine... I'm an athlete. Hockey player." He says it as if it were common knowledge. It probably was, but you honestly hadn't been keeping up with anything other than figure skating.
"Really? Me too! But I'm not a hockey player. I'm a figure skater. That's why I'm here, actually. The coolers at the rink reserved for the figure skating team are sorta fucked up, so there's this huge gas leak. I didn't know that could even happen. And since the rink is shut down for the next few weeks, we had to call in a favor with Coach Jensen. He was kind enough to let us use the rink here, though I'm not entirely sure how much I trust this ice considering how rough hockey players are on it—"
You're cut off by Amanda's voice.
"There you are! What are you doing? We have practice. Stop bothering this poor kid." She turns to him. "So sorry about her—she tends to ramble a lot."
"Really? I couldn't tell..." he jokes.
"Yeah, she's weird like that." Amanda turns back to you. "When you're ready, we're just down this hall—"
"I know, I know..." Your face heats up as you watch her walk away. "Sorry, habit..."
"That's okay. You should probably go though, huh?"
"Oh, yeah, probably..."
"Yeah... I'll, uh, see you around?"
"Yeah, maybe..."
Next thing you knew, he was walking away before you even had the chance to ask his name.
Luckily for you, the hockey team (you know, the one he’s on) had an Instagram account. He had been tagged in a recent post. You sent him a follow request, then immediately undid it because what if he thinks you're weird? Then you re-sent it and turned off your phone before you could overthink it.
It took all of twenty seconds before your phone pinged. Once. Twice.
johnlogan.22 accepted your follow request
johnlogan.22 requested to follow you
You smiled... and then accepted.
For the last three hours, you sat comfortably in the library. Studying "Cognitive Psychology — Investigating how the brain processes information, including memory, language acquisition, attention, and decision-making."... So fun. With that, you decided you were done for the day.
You reached for your phone, unlocking it and opened messages first thing. When you found who you were looking for, you didn't hesitate to text him.
You: Heyy, u free?
Logan: no but i can b why whats up?
You: Nothin js thought maybe you'd wanna get food w me
You: But if ur busy it's fine
Logan: noo i do where r u? I'll pick you up
You: At the library, u really don't have to tho
Logan: ik i want to syiam
You: ???
Your last text went unanswered, so you put your phone in your bag and started packing away your notebooks, textbooks and stationery. After returning the textbooks you took from the library, you stepped out. Ironically bumping into a hard, muscular chest.
"Do you ever watch where your going?" Asked a familiar voice, amusement evident in his tone.
You step bsck to look at him, "I said you didn't have to come." You tried to sound strict, but you were too sweet for it.
"And I told you, I know. I wanted to." Logan says while taking your bag from you and heading towards his truck.
Over the past three years that you've been friends with Logan, you've learnt that you don't open doors when he's around. You don't carry heavy when he's around. You don't go ignored when he's around. If you ever needed anything, he'd be there for you as soon as humanly possible. He was the perfect best friend.
Best friends. That's what you were to each other. Even if you so desperately wanted more, it wouldn't happen. You wholeheartedly believed that Logan didn't see you that way.
You listened as he spoke about something stupid that Garrett and Dean did earlier during practice, about his classes, just about his day in general.
And he returned the favour, listening to you. Even if most of what you were telling him made no sense to him. He paid close attention to everything.
"Oh, what's 'syiam'?" You ask him as you reach his truck.
"What?"
"Your text, "syiam'."
He thinks for a bit, "Oh, that! See you in a minute. C'mon, babe. That one was easy." He teases.
"Nothing about you is easy, John Logan." You sigh.
He pinches your side lightly and you yelp, "Hey!"
"Get your ass in the car, babe." He opens the passenger door for you.
"Thank you." You say as you climb into his car.
"You're welcome." He places your bag in your lap, closes the door and goes over to the driver's side.
Once he's in, he turns to you and asks, "Where to, beautiful?"
"Hmm... Malone's?"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"Malone's it is." He starts the car, and drives over to Malone's.
As he drives you continue talking to him about everything and anything. Eventually falling into a comfortable silence. That was something you appreciated about Logan. The fact that he could sit there in the silence.
As you continue to Malone's, you continue to sit in the calm and peaceful quiet. Happy to be in each other's presence.
A/N: Heyy you guys, finally done with chapter 1!! I hope you enjoyed it. It's my first time posting proper fanfiction, so I'm a little scared but mostly I just have more respect for fanfic writers and writers in general. They work so hard
It was clear to everyone that John Logan was hopelessly in love with you. They could see it in the way he looked at you when he thought no one was watching, in how his face would brighten the moment you walked into a room, and in the quiet way he always put you first. Whenever you needed anything, he’d be there at the drop of a dime. He remembered every small detail you mentioned, made excuses just to spend time with you, and seemed to light up whenever your name came up in conversation. And yet… you were always just his “best friend.”
