"They can be whoever they want to be" What it means is "lovers, boyfriends, husbands."

You realize that Gale is completely in love with John when you see that the others are between uncomfortable and confused, and he, despite trying to hide it, is absolutely delighted to see his boyfriend sing, dance, and have fun. The others see a man singing horribly badly, while Gale sees his John being adorably silly.

Gale and John are so much like a married couple that it feels like they're calling their son, who just moved out to study at the university. Gale is worried about how he's adjusting, while John laughs and asks him if he's already gotten drunk at a fraternity party.
