I’m okay to be in the position of not knowing but I often find people have a very hard time having their knowing…not even properly challenged but literally just not gobbled up as the word of god immediately. i saw a post earlier and it was a...i think a carib person praising black americans for their contributions to culture with like sycophantic verbiage. along the lines of black americans running the world through the culture that has been disseminated worldwide. i understand this sentiment is part of a growing tide of black americans finally being given their flowers for their contributions to specifically music and fashion (but really the appreciation does and should extend to the entire scope of human production which black americans have made invaluable contributions to). and i know this is especially a sentiment seeking to rectify or at least move away from the sentiment of black americans being seen as the worst of the african diaspora, a people immigrants should strive to be unlike, a group that hasn't done much since the civil rights movement (or, even worse, has undone the progress made at that time), blah de blah de blah. however what i want to kind of work through here is calling attention to the american part of being black american and how culture was and is able to spread globally and how that is not a two way street, because i think this sentiment can lend to endorsing passing the torch of imperial power to black hands rather than eliminating it altogether. as black american music and fashion (and other modes of production) became and continue to be subsumed into mainstream american culture it will, obviously, be disseminated worldwide through exactly the same capitalist-imperial channels that carry other american...idk "things". its not some less violent or more equal exchange of production that happens just because its happening from one member of the african diaspora to another, especially when one party holds far more global power. please remember...american citizenship is an absurd amount of power to have. no amount of disgusting racism from the non-american african diaspora toward black americans will undo that. you can get shit hurled at you and still hold more power. i want to talk about how this imbalance becomes evident when ideas are "cashed in on" but i dont have the time, i gotta work out. but the very basic point is that america's iron clad fist on the world should be critiqued no matter what.
