-If she had already been acquainted with him she would've said something annoying like she had Scott, but instead she opted for simply knocking this time around.-
Mr. Joelll, are you in there?
-Pearlo
Joel was arm deep in his cauldron when he heard the knocking at his door. He jolted and frowned when the potion from the cauldron sprayed everywhere. "Give me a moment!" he called out, grabbing a nearby towel and wiping his arms off and snapping his fingers to get rid of all the excess liquid spewed about.
Joel hadn't heard that voice before but maybe it was just a customer who came to see him in person. He brushed off his robes and walked to the door before pulling it open. He looked up at Pearl and offered her a smile. "I haven't seen you before! What can I do for you?"
I know this is going to sound insane but I'm going to be your new best friend, and probably sleep on your couch. Sorry for being annoying and way too talkative in advance.
-She was immediately relieved at the simple sight of someone smiling at her, especially on a familiar face. She'd learned her lesson from Scott, however, not wanting to walk right in and risk being yelled at again.-
Joel was confused, to say the least. Most who came this far out were insane, customers, or a certain knight he didn't want to even think about right now. They were never someone wanting to be his new best friend, especially not with the whole debacle that came from the kingdom. (Most who came to buy from him tended to do so to avoid being seen with him.)
"Yes, well... Ahem." This person didn't seem too intimidating. Perhaps they just needed a place to rest. "Do come in." He stepped to the side. "It's a mess and maybe a bit too small for the both of us, but I'm sure we can make it work for now. Why haven't you gone to the kingdom? Surely they'd have a nice big place for you."
Oh I did go to the kingdom, saved like hundreds of peoples lives. But yknow, I just didn't want their pity or whatever.
-This was only a half lie. She mainly just found it overwhelming to think about forming relationships with people that don't exist in her other "visions", knowing learning their characters would be for not as it has in the past.
When he invited her in she was surprised by the hospitality he showed, actually agreeing to her statement. She walked in, gazing around the small cabin while resisting the urge to touch any of the various magical items about.-
Scott the soldier boy says hi by the way, he's the one who led me to you.
"Ah, really?" he asked, shutting the door behind her after taking a glance around outside — he hoped nothing had followed her. He locked the door and waved his hand to produce tiny orbs of lights which flitted around the cabin. He walked over to the table and began to organize his things.
At the mention of Scott he froze. "Did he?" Joel sounded confused. It hadn't been too long since they last crossed paths, but it wasn't... Friendly. None of their recent meetings ever were. He frowned, his brow furrowing. "I see. Well. Thank you."
Joel seemed to pause and stew in that information for a few moments before he nodded his head towards the stairs leading downward. He led her into the basement, the floating lights seemed to follow him wherever he went.
Joel gestured to a bed and looked back toward her. "It's not the comfiest, but I hope it'll be alright for now." He looked at Tilly and raised an eyebrow. "As for your dog, I hope you won't mind sharing a bed with it."
-She went and sat on the bed, setting her bag of things beside her and motioning for Tilly to follow. She jumped up beside her and began to nuzzle into Pearl's hand as always.-
Do you often accept crazy rambling strangers into your home to stay or am I just special? This is going a lot smoother than I thought it would, even for it being you, Joel.
"Well, when people venture this far out just to see me," he begins, laughing softly, "I can't exactly say no, can I? You seem like you need someplace to stay and I wouldn't mind some company. I... Uhm. It gets lonely out here. I don't get a lot of visitors."
Joel watched as Tilly hopped onto the bed beside Pearl and nuzzled into her. He smiled and nodded his head as if he just confirmed something. "Besides, you don't seem like you plan on butchering me up in the middle of the night."
I wouldn't put myself above it, but I am glad you don't think I'm a murderer.
-Her smile widened a bit as she heard his tale of loneliness, humming in thought. He was out here in the woods for a reason, and if Scott disliked his name being mentioned so much it was most likely not great. Nonetheless she couldn't envision him hurting a fly on purpose.-
Well then, you've got yourself a roommate. You should be seeing a lot of me.
"Yeah. I guess I will." Joel gave Pearl a tight smile before conjuring some fire in the fireplace that was located in the corner. It lit up the small room and provided more warmth. He gave her one last look before clearing his throat and tilted his head back.
"Well then," he began, turning around, "I'll see you later. Goodnight."
-If she had already been acquainted with him she would've said something annoying like she had Scott, but instead she opted for simply knocking this time around.-

-It was evening, about five minutes before the official closing time of the shop. Etho walks in the door and the little bell rings signaling the entry.-
-They look around for a moment for any sign of Joel or Tubbo, expecting Joel since Tubbo was likely still..traumatized? Or at least given a day off, maybe grounded. In any case they spotted him cleaning table and getting ready to close up.-
Hey..you got time for one more order?
- @ethoslabdoesthings
Joel had been cleaning up a table, zoning out as he did so. The repetitive act of scrubbing at the table had lulled his mind into a momentary state of calm. That was until he heard the familiar sound of the bell ringing, signaling the sign of someone entering the cafe.
Joel suppressed a sigh. The place was empty and he was closing. Who in their right mind would come in right now? He opened his mouth to greet them before promptly closing it when he suddenly heard their voice, recognizing it immediately. A smile spread across Joel's face.
That was a voice he loved. A face he loved. "Etho. Here you are again." Joel adjusts the apron around his waist before waving his friend over. "I've always got time for you. You know that. This late though? You should have come sooner."
-Etho would pull down his mask, feeling quite comfortable to do so in such an empty scene. Joel’s smile and enthusiasm was quick to rub off on them, a warm smile spreading on their face. For no one but Joel..they wouldn’t be caught dead being so carefree anywhere else.-
Sorry about that, yeah..I had a busy day and honestly didn’t know if I’d make it. Can’t go without my fix though if I can help it.
Joel blinked one too many times as he examined Etho's features. Truly, they were gorgeous in his eyes. He was sure that any artist who laid their eyes on that handsome face would be doomed to make art of it for all eternity.
Joel laughed, patting Etho on the shoulder. "Don't worry! I was just wondering where you were at," he said, leading them toward the counter. He looked up at them, an expression of pure adoration on his face. The fast beat of his heart was normal.
Right?
"You're lucky you're our good friend." Joel walked behind the counter. "I would have been pissed if you were any other person. It's almost closing time for God's sake..."
-Etho couldn’t help but admire the adoring look on Joel’s face, even if they only thought it to be out of friendliness. Even the small action of him patting their shoulder made their heart skip a beat, damn them being so soft for this man. They would’ve been lost in those gorgeous eyes and their swirling thoughts forever if they didn’t have to think up an average reply, following closely behind Joel.-
Well I’m flattered you think highly enough of me to serve me at closing time, I’ve seen how pissy you get when someone comes in this late.
-They’d remain on the other side of the counter, admiring Joel’s movements as they spoke.-
Joel quickly set to work preparing Etho's regular, the music a distant hum in the background as he focused entirely on his friend and their order. He tilted his head to the side as they spoke, laughing to himself as the comment.
Joel did get quite pissy when people decided to come to their cafe this late. Of course, it wasn't actually closed yet, but anyone in their right mind should see him cleaning up and realize they should try their luck another time.
"Can you really blame me?" he questioned as he looked towards them, pausing for a moment as his gaze lingered on their mouth a few seconds too long. He cleared his throat. "As they say, don't poke the sleeping bear. I guess I'd be the bear in that scenario."
-There was that sweet laughter again, a sound that sent such joy to Etho’s heart, and some amount of pride to be able to make him laugh. Joel’s comment was very understandable, but still amusing as he compared himself to this ‘sleeping bear’. He really could be scary like one when annoyed…-
-As Joel looked to them they could almost swear they saw something in that gaze, the way it lingered almost making them question for a few moments as they watched it. His continuation with the jest was the thing to break this line of thought, Etho chuckling at the thought of it.-
Ah yes, I’m sure anyone getting on your bad side would be getting the claws from you. -There was a small pause as they recollected themselves slightly, their soft laughter ceasing as they were left with a small smirk in its place.- I don’t blame you for your annoyance though, people really should have some sense not to be getting coffee of all things at this hour.
Joel grumbled in response. He placed the lid on Etho's drink before sliding it over to them, watching as their laughter shifted into a smile. A smile that lit up the world if seemed. He had to force himself to look away, pretending he was staring at a wall instead of thinking about how badly he wanted to feel those lips against
"Right. Some people have no sense at all," he says, hoping the way his face warmed wasn't too obvious. He pulled his apron off, placing it on the counter. "People like you. Do you have a reason you decided to come so late? I know you said you were busy, but you didn't have to come at all, you know."
-Luckily for Joel their attention shifted to the drink as he slid it over, providing him safety from them potentially picking up on how his face was warming for the moment. Etho took a long sip from the cup as they listened to Joel, speaking up a few moments later in response.-
Well I’ll most likely be up all night and personally I prefer a perfectly crafted cup of this stuff than any energy drink. -They glanced back in Joel’s direction for a moment before turning their gaze back to their coffee. Their voice was a little softer with their next comment.- Besides, I like to come just to see you, too.
"Perfectly crafted cup, huh?" he mumbled. He had learned most of what he knew about coffee making from Lizzie and even then, making coffee wasn't even that difficult. He appreciated the sentiment regardless, a smile tugging at his lips.
At the next comment, Joel paused. He blinked a few too many times before coughing. He looked at the wall again, willing himself to calm down. They were friends. They were nothing more than friends. Etho hadn't meant it that way.
"Well, I'm always glad to see your handsome face," he says in a playful manner, winking at Etho. His heart was practically pounding in his ears. Why did he say that? Sure, he always joked around like that. But what if Etho knew he meant it??
-Etho couldn’t help but grin at at Joel’s comment, playing along as they playfully scoffed at it. His wink and slight teasing snapped them out of their thoughts for the moment, there was never a chance for them to be able to focus whenever Joel was up to his cute antics. That’s what they were to them, anyways.-
Oh yeah, you find my face handsome now do you~? -Etho said this mostly just for the banter, though a small part of them was genuinely curious if he meant it. Joel finding them attractive..now that was a thought that piqued their interest.-
Joel felt his face get warm as Etho teased him. It was just banter. Friendly banter. A back and forth between friends. He hated that he wanted them to be something more than just friends. He had a wife for God's sake and even if he didn't, it still wouldn't be right.
Etho was a friend.
Just a friend.
"Anyone- Anyone with eyes would say the same," he replied, cursing himself for stammering over his words. He was acting like a lovesick fool. He needed to get control of himself. He wasn't in love. He was just having odd thoughts about them. Everyone has them once about a friend.
-Joel’s stammering reaction only confirmed Etho’s thoughts, this idea of Joel being attracted to them somewhat was certainly something they planned to tease him on later. If only he was more prideful in the fact, then his redness (of course only to be assumed as embarrassed blushing) would be even cuter, if that was even possible.-
Well this face is for your eyes only, so I wouldn’t know. For now I’ll just have to assume you think this highly of me.
-The statement was true, Joel was the only person that ever got to see their face like this without it being an accident. It honestly warmed their heart a little that he found them handsome, even if they were going to keep up this cocky act.-
"Regardless, you still have other features that make you..." Joel paused. What could he say that didn't make him sound weird? He couldn't necessarily call Etho attractive to their face. Joel cleared his throat, placing his hands on his hips.
"Well, you know what I mean. Like your voice, your eyes, your personality," he continued, looking at Etho's face as he spoke. "Anyone who has you as a partner should consider themselves... Lucky. Real lucky."
Seems like you’ve been paying a mighty lot of attention to me then to notice all of that…-Now Etho would be absolutely lying if they said that those compliments didn’t have some effect on them, clearly Joel was thinking a lot more about them than they had thought. Etho had a lot of courage when it came to complimenting Joel usually, but at the moment they didn’t think they could manage it without letting on their real feelings.-
-When he brought up the prospect of Etho having a partner their confidence they’d maintained faltered slightly, they averted their gaze to the counter as their previous smile faded with their response.- You’d think that..
But I don’t know. I can hardly keep my friends, let alone any partners.
Well played. Joel didn't respond to Etho, not knowing what to say. He might as well take that one. He went back to cleaning up the tables. It was best to do it before Lizzie found out he hadn't done anything but speak to Etho. She would probably tease him more than scold him.
"Yeah?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "I'm surprised. You're a good person." He pressed his lips together as he scrubbed down the tables. "You know, I used to think that before I met Lizzie. She and I have been together for a long while now. Hopefully you meet someone who... You know."
Joel rubs the back of his neck. "Unless you don't want a relationship at all then that's pretty cool," he said, trying to sound like he wasn't judging Etho. "I just wanted to... Ah, you get what I mean."
-Etho stole glances to Joel as he resumed his cleaning of the tables, returning to the drinking of their coffee while leaning against the counter lightly.-
-When Joel spoke again they turned their full attention to him again, his words actually piquing their interest. It wasn’t too often they got a glimpse into Joel’s old life, so the small comment was something they took note of. Etho smiled again, quickly going to reassure Joel as they heard him go back on his own words.- No, no I..I’m definitely interested in it. I just don’t have many options, I mean I only have a small handful of close friends they aren’t really available for this sort of thing.
Joel went still for a moment as Etho made that last comment. He quickly went back to scrubbing with a bit more swiftness than he did before. Etho meant nothing by it. Nothing at all. They were just pointing out that Joel was happily married. Which he was very, very happy in his marriage.
Joel looked at his wedding ring, a frown on his face. Sure, Lizzie teased him sometimes for the way he acted around other people. Etho and Jimmy particularly, but he didn't know if she'd be okay with it. If she knew how Joel wanted to kiss his friends and still be with her, would she still love him?
"Happily married... Yeah." Joel was very happy. He shouldn't be thinking about anyone else but his wife. He pushed his hair out of his face. "And you're no homewrecker, yeah?"
-Etho’s gaze followed Joel’s down to his ring, lingering there for a bit even after he looked elsewhere. They also knew this wasn’t right, to like a married man as they did. That word ‘homewrecker’ still rang through their mind as they looked back up at Joel’s face, a bit of their internal guilt showing in their voice.-
Yeah, I suppose I’m not known to be a homewrecker. I mean you’ve got the kid even, I’d never do that to you even if it were an option.
"Oh, come on," he says, waving his hand at Etho. He tried to hide the disappointment he knew he was feeling, giving them a friendly smile instead. He walked over to them, patting them on the back. He looked up at them.
"I know you were just joking. I mean, me?" Joel shook his head. "I'd be shocked if you of all people were attracted to me. I mean... I'm a good looking guy, but still."
-Etho set his drink down as Joel came over, having to ignore how his friendly gestures always made them feel. With some hesitance they held Joel’s gaze, though they couldn’t really return the enthusiasm he had put on.-
Well that doesn’t really matter does it. How I feel on this, I mean. Whether it’s a joke or not the fact that isn’t right is still the same.
Not right. Joel froze. A cloudy look overtook his expression. He knew it wasn't. He knew he should be happy that Etho shared the sentiment, but he wanted to grab them by the front of their jacket and shake them back and forth — driving out any idea that it wasn't right out of their head.
Joel didn't do that though. He stood still, tilting his head to the side. He huffed, a sound he meant to be a laugh, before slowly shaking his head. "Nope," he said, popping the "p" sound. "It wouldn't be right. Anyway. Just drop it. Don't worry. We're still friends, yeah?"
-Hearing him agree so quickly stung for them, let alone how he huffed at the idea. This was the responsible thing to do, and he was probably straight anyways..not that they wouldn’t pull the enby card out to bypass that if they were desperate enough. In any case Etho had a reputation to maintain and did care for Joel’s family, they couldn’t imagine wrecking that. They glanced away from Joel with a small sigh, their tone rather flat as they kept any of those emotions from coming through in their voice.-
Yeah. You’re right, we’re friends and that’s that, nothing more.
"Nothing more and nothing less." Joel patted Etho on the back. It stung to say. He practically had to force the words out of his mouth. It didn't feel right. That they were just friends. That whatever they had together was just friendship.
Today wasn't the day to confront that. He gave Etho a smile. Joel would just talk to Lizzie about it at some point, ask her if what he was feeling was normal — and probably face her teasing for hours — and come to a conclusion.
"Let's just forget it, yeah? Talk about something else."

Tubbo walked in looking disheveled and there was something on his horns and in his hair that seemed unnatural (probably something lizzie will have a fit over). He however had a big smile as he ran and hugged joel. It wasn't an often occurance that the little guy hugged joel.

Joel stumbled back a bit before enveloping Tubbo in a tight hug, clinging to him as if he couldn't believe his boy was back. "Tubbo..." he mumbled before pulling back, looking the kid up and down. He raised an eyebrow.
"What happened to..." he trailed off before sighing. He pulled a towel out of his pocket and tried to clean Tubbo up. "Are you okay? Me and your mother have been worried sick."
"Don't need all what?" he echoed, raising an eyebrow as he dared Tubbo to continue his sentence. When there was no add-on, Joel just sighed. He narrowed his eyes at the sculk, placing his head on the back of the boy's head as he pulled him closer.
"That looks like it's stuck on good. I don't even know what it is." Joel quickly tried scrubbing it off again to no avail, only further staining his own hands. He wiped it off on his apron before turning towards the stairs.
"Lizzie! I need you for something!" Joel called for his wife, regardless of what Tubbo might have to say about it. He was certain she'd know whatever that weird substance was.
"That's definitely not glitter," he says from where he's standing beside the two. He stepped out of the way when Lizzie barged in and ran over to Tubbo. Joel picked at the gunk on his hands, raising an eyebrow at the odd texture.
"Wh- What!?" Joel shook his head quickly, glancing between the two. "Now that's just not- Just not true! Don't drag me into this, young man. I know you're trying to turn the blame on me so we move past what you did."
"Um well.. you know mum. Sometimes when you go for a walk to tommys... you get kidnapped by a mysterious bear-vex man covered in goop with a serious grudge against our good family friend grian. Who just happened to show me footage of when I was trapped as a kid. And you know sometimes we escape on our own." His voice was very squeaky at the end.
"And now all this stuff is in my horns and i can feel it wriggling and it's really icky. But like none of this is a huge deal."
Joel looked at his now clean hands, letting out a long sigh of relief. He didn't like how the goop had felt on his skin. He mumbled a quick "thank you" before placing his hands on his hips. At the sound of Tubbo's rambling, Joel turned to face him.
"I'm sorry. What?" Joel was appalled by what he was hearing. Tubbo was kidnapped? "Hold on. You were kidnapped? Tubbo. What... You can't just skip past that. What do you mean you were kidnapped?"
"Because it was mostly fine and I was already on my way home." He wiggled trying to pull his face away from lizzie then when she said she wouldn't be able to fix it he froze.
"But you can fix anything! You've always fixed it before!" He got teary eyes and upset.
Joel was still pretty hung up on the whole "kidnapped" thing. Joel felt a protective surge. He crossed his arms over his face, looking between the two of them. He frowned, his brow furrowed. He reached out to rub at his horns again.
"I'm sorry, bud," he grumbles. He'd have a conversation with Tubbo later about his punishment for all of that, but for now, his son needed some comforting. "I'm sure Lizzie will... Figure something out. Maybe."
Tubbo walked in looking disheveled and there was something on his horns and in his hair that seemed unnatural (probably something lizzie will have a fit over). He however had a big smile as he ran and hugged joel. It wasn't an often occurance that the little guy hugged joel.
