Wake up. Fat line of yaoi cocaine at 8am on a Monday morning. Attempt to make it through the working day. Another line at 6pm. Try to function.
"I thought we already knew" Christians believe in God but would still probably freak out if they saw Jesus on a random Monday morning
Talked a little about this in the dnp community but I might as well post about it here too.
First of all, as someone who’s flat broke, I have no interest or intention of paying for the patreon. Even if I did have the money, it’s just not my thing anyway. The podcast is great, but I’m not too invested in extra content for it.
That is to say, this isn’t coming from a biased perspective. This is coming from a more logical perspective: the patreon makes sense to me. They spoke about how YouTube has been demonitising them for a while and essentially removing all of their videos on restricted mode, mostly due to their overtly queer content, which I suppose explains their reliance on sponsors to actually make an income these days. That’s not to say I’d be happy if any of their YouTube content were to end up behind a paywall, but… that’s not what’s happening.
The podcast having its own patreon makes sense because it’s an expensive set up, and they have people working for them. Those workers need to be paid. We don’t know what their actual income looks like, or how rich they are, but having a consistent set up with editors and producers and camera operators requires a steady and guaranteed income to ensure everyone’s being paid enough wages, and they may not be getting that from YouTube.
I think kids on Twitter are treating this like an extension of evil capitalism and yeah… it is. Obviously. But Dan and Phil know that, that’s why they told people how to bypass extra costs to get the lowest price, added a free tier, and only put podcast content behind a paywall rather than any YouTube content. Not to assume shit about people I don’t know, but considering they’ve put as much of their content up for free, including their stage shows, I really don’t think they’d be setting up a patreon unless they had to.
Quite frankly, if this podcast needs proper funding, then I’d rather it be from the fans rather than sketchy ads, especially cos it will be focused exclusively on what we want rather than what any advertisers want. And also… I don’t really care?? This may be a personal thing, but the podcast is so new that I’m not attached to it enough to really give a shit about extra content. If they put fucking spooky week on patreon then yeah, I’d kill a YouTube executive, but a studio tour? An extra 15 mins of yapping? I’m good, man, I can go without. They haven’t offered anything that’s absolutely vital to the phandom, and I assume they did that deliberately because they acknowledged that not everyone can pay.
You’re gonne be fine. The patreon makes sense. Other people in the phandom will pirate the content for you, or you can learn how to pirate shit yourself, and as long as Dan and Phil are paying their workers properly I really don’t give a shit. YouTubers make patreons. Fork found in kitchen.

Next time someone asks you if Dan and Phil are dating you can just respond with “yes they’ve been together since 2009” instead of sending an essay back to them

characters avatars set - Isabel May as Elsa Dutton (1883)
I had abandoned every memory of Tennessee, as though I was born on this journey. But I wasn’t… We were leaving a place and seeking another. And the journey was the necessary, miserable road between the two. Somehow I felt immune to the dangers of this place. As if the land and I had struck a deal. I could pass unharmed so long as I loved it. And I did. I loved everything about it. But crossing the Brazos taught me there was no deal. No matter how much we love it, the land will never love us back.
