Going Quiet
Mom never completely understood why, as a teeneager, I'd shut myself off in my room for an hour after school. It didn't happen everyday. It happened in cycles that repeated often enough that she noticed a pattern and brought it up. She said she assumed it was because I was a teenager and that developmentally I needed more rest. She also told me adolescents can also tend to clam up and withdraw because they are trying to define who they are as individuals, be their own people, and define themselves apart from their parents.. It sounded good to me. I was more than aware it was happening and was glad there was a reason because even to myself it didn't seem quite normal and seemed a bit more pronounced compared to others. I just thought I couldn't keep up and pushed extra hard to do so which propably only compounded the problem Looking back I now understanding that there was so much more going on. I had no idea how overtaxed my nervous system was.

These have gotta pop any day now!
The first time I photographed this peony bush this season was back on April 29.
I'm guessing the stalks were just under a foot tall at that time. I've enjoyed watching them and our other plants growing I think I'm more tuned in since I'm not working.

Was working at the desk in the office this morning and was going to start taking some written notes when Sylvester jumped up and plopped himself right in front of me on the paper I was gonna use.
So entitled.
But so cute.
I of course let him get away with it. How could I disturb this perfect display of cuteness? I listened to a podcast on the computer instead.

Today I worked on cleaning out the space between our retaining wall and the neighbor's fence. Getting up from kneeling isn't as easy as it used to be.
Dale and I finished watching the Kylie documentary on Netflix tonight. It was all very well done and what an amazing woman and incredible human being she is. It's hard not to feel warm and happy listening to her sing and speak and watching her perform. She's seriously like a ray of sunshine and as corny as that sounds it's hard to find a better way to describe her.
Kylie addressed why she loves her gay fanbase so much and a lot of it has to do with the fact we never left. She first appeared in America in 1988 and was on the radio and all over the gay dance clubs. I have particulary fond memories of her from the summer of 1988. It was one of the hottest on record. I was in my early 20s and about to face my last sememster in college and student teaching that fall. I Should Be So Lucky and her version of The Locomotion were incredibly popular at that time and I can't help but associate those songs with that summer. This was all very nostalgic for me.
What fun.
Her concert video pemieres on Netflix tomorrow!

Memorial Day 2026
Monday, May 25, 2026
Dale and I took a bike ride today. Today's the unofficial beginning of summer so this was our first bike ride together for the season.
We think my last ride was this past October when we did the same route that we did today. Dale asked me how I felt after the ride and I told him I found it to be a little easier. However my stamina wasn't any better than the last time around. However it felt shorter due to having done the same ride before and being familiar with it. Maybe that's why I perceiving it as feeling a bit easier.
We went to Fort Snelling. This is just one of the many buildings at the fort.
This is the view with my back to the building in the previous picture. That's the Mississippi River flowing by the (small) urban forest you see across from it. If you squint you can see the downtown Minneapolis skyline just above the trees in the left third of the photo.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our Lily-of-the-Valley is flowering and the fragrance produced has a lovely sweet smelling strong pungency. Our next door neighbor tells us she can smell it in her yard.
Speaking of the next door neighbor, her Bridal Wreath Spiria is flowering and spilling into our yard like a waterfall.
Neither of the flowers shown in this post last long. Ya gotta appreciate them while they're here, and knowing human nature, would be easy to do if they lasted all season.
The Yard Today
Friday, May 22, 2026
Andrea's Bridal Wreath Spiria is starting to come in.
So is the tiger grass. Had to cut it back a little.
The rhubarb is looking good.
The peony bush is filling out but the flowers haven't bloomed yet.
The yard's starting to come together.
Cigar in the garage.

Got the flowers in planters today.
Ran out of flowers for this planter. I think I'll pick up some more snapdragons. They grow nice and tall so they'll look good behind the pansies.

Under these little blankies are the flowers we bought yesterday. When I drew the covers back this morning they were in good shape. Glad I kept 'em cozy last night.

Dale and I went to Bachman's today and picked up some annuals. Shown above are petunias, pansies, and snapdragons. Not gonna plant them yet as it's supposed to be cool tonight. It's supposed to get down to the mid to upper 30s. These plants are pretty hearty but I don't want to take a chance. Tonight I'll cover them up.

It's that time of year. Iris flowers on a neighbor's boulevard.
Monday, May 11, 2026
I've been working pretty consistently lately at getting the upstairs cleaned out of all my school stuff. Dale's current project is to clean the windows inside and out.
He's off to a good start.

Flowering Trees and Rhubarb
Monday, May 11, 2026
The flowering crab trees in the neighborhood are looking really beautiful.
They don't last long so you're forced to appreciate them while they're flowering.
It's a good reminder to be in the moment and not take things for granted.
The rhubarb in the back yard is starting to send up its seed stalks.
