  he   pops   up   with  about  as  much  velocity  as   𝘢  𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘤𝘬 - 𝘢 - 𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘦,     a  head  heavy  on  its  spring,    bobbing  delirious     &.      bewildered  while  his  brain  chugged  along  to  pick  through  the  words  like  pieces  of  a  jigsaw       :        𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍,        𝚋𝚘𝚢,           𝚋𝚎𝚜𝚝,       turned  out  pretty  crucial  to  get   those   in   the  right  order.      still  later  than  sooner  if  the  heat  bubbling  pink  up  to  his  ears  felt  like  being  a  traitor  about  it.   

      no.    anyway  let's  talk  abt  steve  and  basketball  and  how  up  'til  now  its  presence  in  the  show  was  only  there  to  function  as  a  framing  device  for  steve's  fallen  from  grace  storyline.   basketball  isn't  steve's  favorite  hobby  or  lifelong  passion  or  any  of  that,    it  wasn't  even  his  identity.     it  was  just  padding  for  his  identity.    can't  be  a  hot  shit  jock  if  you  nix  the  jock  part,    right   ?      and  he's  decent  enough  at  it,    something  of  a  mix  of  natural  athleticism     &.    showmanship,       and  the  team / coach  hoisting  him  up  as  the  golden  player  and  working  around  him       -      and  once  steve'd  hit  rock  bottom,    they  don't  play  around  him,    and  his  light  footedness  exposes  itself  as  a  fatal  flaw  not  just  to  his  play  style,    but  to  steve  as  a  person,    as  someone  who’s  a  flight  risk,    who  won’t  commit,    who  has  always  run  away.     so  it's  interesting  how  so  much  of  where  steve's  development  is  headed  is  presented  through  courtside  imagery  with  very  little   ( almost  zero )  dialogue  from  steve  himself.     really,    the  only  times  he  ditches  his  determination  to  completely  ignore   new   hawkins   king   billy   is  about  basketball.      it's  this  last  ditch  desperate  effort  to  prove  something,    maybe  more  to  himself  than  anyone,    to  claw  back  on  top  and  get  out  of  those  woods  and  say   " i'm  still  that  guy,    that  guy  is  still  me "   and  everyone's  watching,   even  laughing  now.

      this   hot   shit   jock   identity  is  slipping  through  his  fingers,    and  he  was  alright  with  it  because  he  used  to  have  nancy  and  to  him,    that  was  more  than  worth  the  exchange.    but  now  even  that's  slipped  through  his  fingers.     and  really,    that's  a  huge  reason  why  steve's  eventual  partnership  with  dustin  and  the  party  became  so  integral  to  his  entire  characterization  in  the  episodes  moving  forward.    he  lost  his  identity  as  king  steve,     he  lost  his  identity  as  the  one  nancy  loved,    he'd  become  recluse    &.    isolated,      and  was  prone  to  these  short  manic  bursts  of  overwhelmed  uncomfortable  discontent  over  walking  in  shoes  that  he  no  longer  recognized.   he  lost  the  whole  jock  identity  both  by  choice  and  by  circumstance,    but  he  found  new  purpose  in  the  role  of  a  protector,    of  someone  who  can  and  therefore  will.
